Sorry if this has been posted already but I haven't seen any specific threads about it. An elderly couple in china refused to move out of there house for a highway to be built. This didn't stop the highway being built, they just built it around the house.

Edit: its in the funny pic thread sorry.

Poor couple. I hope they get a good deal out of that place because as it stands; this is no way to treat people.

Not sure how it is in other countries, but in the USA if you are in the way of a road being built they'll offer to buy your property first, then force you to leave if you don't.

Apparently from a yahoo article(That I can't find now) I read is that China cannot demolish a house that is owned by a person.

Depends on the state.

Racism against ursines is prohibited here. And that includes Pandas.:D

The sad thing is that train station will probably be overbudget, overcapacity and underutilized, much like everything China builds nowadays.

Could this be considered an ugly case of Government corruption(screwing the tenants), or ugly case that could have used some Government corruption(kick them out, illegally)?

Having lived here for long enough all I can say is you can't really beat the government here. These things are more common than one might think but a lot of it doesn't make it into mainstream media.

I feel sorry for those people there but judging by the type of road I'm going to guess that they won't get much traffic on it because it's in the middle of nowhere.

The issue here was they were offered money to leave but to rebuild a home or buy a new one was more than what they were offered so they said no to moving out.

Now they live with no running water or power.

Like I said, overbudget, overcapacity, underutilized. Just like most major infrastructure developments in China nowadays.

. . . Well, it's being built, so that indicates some necessity.

You may also want to define "much" - there is some nearly 1.4 billion people there.

I think you overestimate the Chinese way of doing things. Just because they built it doesn't mean it was necessary.

There are always guys digging up streets here and re-laying them because it generates employment, not because the patch of street has any need for repair, having only been repaired a few months before.

They do the same thing here, only it's to use up their budget so they don't lose it the next year.

China has built malls with no tenants, theme parks with no guests and entire cities with no residents.
You underestimate the ability of the government to waste money in order to artificially inflate GDP numbers.

I wish they did that here some of our roads are just horrible. On the street I live there has been a part or road that has been patched up for the last few years. They do it in summer so by winter it is all lumpy and bumpy it just needs to be all relayed instead of just one bit.

Could you find links or pictures of these places? I'm not doubting them or anything i just find things like this interesting.

Similar - M62 in England. The residents of this farmhouse refused to move so they simply built the M62 (one of the most major roads in the UK) around them.

Haha that's a good one. Not a day goes by when I don't hear of traffic on the M62 due to a crash. Surprised that house hasn't been hit by a car to be honest

I see a driveway and cars but no way to leave house? Did they build a tunnel under the M62? Anyone have info as to how they leave house and how far to get to a main road?
