Personally, I think the idea of electronic textbooks is a great but under-realized concept. And if anyone can spur rapid growth in a market, it's Apple.

But... I've got a problem with Apple's current approach, and this is actually a problem I have with all the books sold through iTunes: They can only be read on an iOS device. And with the textbooks, they're even further limited to the iPad specifically.

I don't have a problem with Apple limiting the content produced in the iBooks Author program from being sold anywhere besides the iBookstore, but c'mon. Let me read the ****ing content on my perfectly-capable MacBook Pro. I've got a 4th gen iPod Touch and will be getting an iPad 3, but still I'd like the ability to view the content on my Mac.

Until they change that, I'll stick to buying electronic books through Kindle.
