Well I don't have any "official" word, but I've not had any problems with viruses/spyware in the month or so I've been using it and I visit some dodgy sites ;) I also use Windows Defender always-on spyware protection.

It is definitely far superior to IE6, but that's just because the flaws havent been found yet.

Maybe I'll try this beta out...

How's it render next to IE6? I had to do a LOT of css hacking to get my current site to load on IE6 and it still doesn't look right under Safari.

This article here leads me to believe that all my css hacking efforts went to waste for when IE7 comes out
http://www.thinkvitamin.com/features/css/stop-css-hacking

Everything renders okay; I'm never sure if I'm seeing all the effects intended by the web designer (same goes for almost any brower: "is that a render bug, a genuine bug, or is it meant to do that?"), but I am able to use all the menus etc. on the sites I visit regularly.

Very early builds of IE7 had trouble rendering some forums (notably, neowin, the header would render but nothing else) but those were fixed a while ago.

I also heard the reports that IE7 would require a pretty much complete rework of all the CSS everywhere, but it seems that everything renders okay and people were unnecesarrily worried. I'm not a stickler for precision, but everything is readable and usable.

Still does terrible at Acid2 though:

Well, unlike earlier betas, it's really easy to uninstall, so there isn't (much) to lose.

poor acid2test guy.... it looks like IE repeatedly smashed his head on to the wall.

He's back to his smiling self with Safari though.

Wow, it's just like Firefox, except pages seem to take longer to load and it's using 61 mbs vs. Firefox that's only using 20 mbs of ram. It is still in beta, but it's still fun to poke fun at M$ and their sloppy coding. :)

I have a question about the acid2 test since it was brought up...

I know that Safari (and Konqueror?) is/are compliant, and the next generations of Opera and FF will be too... but how relevant is it really? Is it more for "street cred" or is the web community really pushing for more browsers to comply with this test.

Oh and is Microsoft planning on developing a browser that is compliant in the future?

I see no reason for MS to even try and get IE to pass Acid. Is compliance really that important to the majority of web developers? I'd venture to say no. It's only a small (albiet loud) group of people that care whether IE is compliant to the letter.

If anything the only thing I really want to become common place is PNG Alpha transparencies, for now at least ill have to stick with GIF's..

The one thing I really want however is for people to move on from 800x600 Res..

Well I just checked, and happily IE7 does all the PNG alpha transparency things the way it should. 👍

Yep which im pleased about, problem is it'll take time for people to adopt it, the number of people who are using 98 & ME will not be able to upgrade, for that reason it'll still be another couple of years before PNG Alpha becomes common place enough to be widely used

Looks like Google is putting money toward the demise of Explorer. http://explorerdestroyer.com/

As long as Explorer is bundled with Windows, there will always be users that refuse to switch. I know plenty of them. It frustrates me because they are still using an ancient, VERY vulnerable, and inferior browser. (IE6 not IE7)

Even when they use my computer, I have firefox in plain sight for them to click on. No explorer icons on the quick launch bar or desktop---yet they go out of their way to look for explorer in the start menu. I don't care that much, I would just rather not have my computer infected with spyware.

Offer other users no choice. If people want to use my computer they are forced to use firefox, that is the condition of use, its my computer and I am doing them a favour by letting them surf the internet with it.

I'll start support Firefox more, when it lives up too the hype, I may use it from time to time but Memory Leaks which havn't been fixed.. pleeease

and wiping out IE is the most stupid idea ever..

Q) What was the first browser YOU used?
A) More than likely IE

Good point. You're definitely right, I began with IE. But that's when it was the superior browser. Back then even Steve Jobs admitted that it was a good browser and bundled it with his macs. But now that's not the case. It has been neglected and the competition has caught up and even surpassed it.

I do think IE7 will change that though. I'll stick with firefox/safari, but it's a good thing for others who choose IE. They now have a safer, more functional, and up-to-date browser.

If IE ever does surpass firefox in security and overall quality, you can bet I'll go back. I think browser loyalty is a bad thing. Always choose the best one.

Indeed. I think security has a lot to do with how common the browser is. Since IE used to ubiquitous, a lot of flaws were discovered and taken advantage of. When Firefox reaches greater popularity, say 25%, then more and more sites will be discovering and taking advatage of flaws in it.

Of course, there are extensions like NoScript which ensure more safety, but one has to consider that the majority of users will not use these extensions.

Currently my primary browser. So far, it's presenting a happy medium between former Firefox and IE. Throw in mouse gestures, and it's the bestest browser around. Slows the system down a little, though, and takes its time shutting down - things for Microsoft to fix.

I cant wait till IE7 is released... Ive always been with IE, its not that bad and I like eye candy over function which is why I stick to it. I dont wat to try it beta because I dont trust it..... although I have windows live messenger...

I posted the same link on the Nintendo "Wii" discussion a couple of days ago

Edit: I just read that this video received 2nd place honors in the Firefox Flicks Video Contest

How did you guys install the update? It says IE7 is already installed, uninstall it first in Add Or Remove programs (where it doesn't show up). Do I have to install IE6 then do it?

DeLoreanBrown
Can you co-install it alonside IE6 ? d.a.k ?
Nope.
Also; can anyone tell me of an instance of the Beta freezing or crashing their updated XP ?
Hasn't happened, even with the earlier betas. The browser may crash, but explorer.exe (the OS) stays alive.

You need to tick the "Show Updates" box at the top of the Add/Remove Programs dialog (to the left of the Sort box) in order to see some of the earlier betas there.

I'm really starting to like it the more I use it. It's still not my primary browser because I really like firefox and IE is still in its beta stages but I like the what I see so far.

I really hope it gets faster by the time Vista comes out. I might use it 50/50 with FF by that time.

Then again, I really like how Opera is progressing. As long as they keep the browser free, then I might switch over to it.

I downloaded IE7, used IE7 for 10 minutes, then I downloaded Avantbrowser from IE7. Its the circle of life.
