If you could change a rule/add an idea in any sport, what would it be?

On the ESPN Facebook page, they asked this very question. I responded with my idea for college sports that I have had for years, yet it would be nearly impossible to pull off for numerous reasons.

Promotion and relegation for college sports teams. It would be like this: The Top 8 teams in each division (Divisions I, II, and III) would be promoted to the higher division, while the bottom 8 would fall to the lower division. Ties would be broken by conference records. Instead of numerous conferences in each Division, there would only be four conferences: North, South, East, and West. AP polls would be decided for each conference. For example, in basketball, #9N (North) Indiana may play #2E (East) Duke. The Top 16 teams in each conference would play in the NCAA Tournament. Four teams from each conference would be on each side of the bracket.

What are your ideas?

Stop footballers/soccerplayers from acting like girls.

After the match, the game should be reviewed and every player acting like a little girl who got hit in her face should be banned for at least 5 games.

That would never work. It would conflict with scheduling operations. And, as you know, lots of money passes hands between schools.

And. Diving. Needs. To. Stop.

Yes, that is why I said it would be nearly impossible. It would be nice to have, though.

Couldn't agree anymore. Maybe instead of a 5 game suspension, maybe 1 game suspension and a decent sized fine.

Remove the fault rule in tennis. You miss that first serve, you lose five points. I wanna see action, damnit, not players standing around for half-a-minute while the server tests for the optimal launch window for a big serve.

Dump the BCS system in College Football. It's only as good as the man behind the computer crunching numbers into it. Sometimes I think that man is very bias.

Ban all rugby league referees from letting Leeds Rhinos get away with cheating. Ugh, it's disgusting how many forward passes that team gets away with.

I'd change the rules of international road cycling to allow participants to use any device they can implement, which should be attached to the bike, to wipe out their opponents. No missiles would be allowed but the good ol' oil slick, tacks and wheel razors would be encouraged.

Road cycling should give way to a new event. I'd call it Formula H. Anything, and I mean anything human powered can enter. The venues would vary from classic bike ovals to kart tracks to full-on race tracks. No rules on body style or design. No minimum or maximum number of wheels. The only requirement is that riders should be able to exit the vehicle if it crashes within ten seconds, and that riders be able to lift the vehicle by themselves.

The day they banned reclining bikes was the day they became irrelevant. And that was all the way back in 1934. :D Modern cycling may have gee-whiz bikes, but it's like NASCAR, an artificially frozen formula that prevents humans from going much much faster.

Bring back harder tackling in football, it was right at around the turn of the century. As long as the ball is won before the man is hit, fair tackle.

Also any player who goes down by his own action should be yellowed, even if there was a foul committed against him.

That, I would pay to watch. It's something I'd be a huge fan of.

I know that recumbent bikes were banned from the Tours for being too fast, it'd be interesting to see all those different man-powered vehicles competing in the same events.

NBA:

-Players get paid as a team, based on the team record. No more guaranteed contract based on prospect most players won't achieve anyway.

-Allow at least couple of challenge/dispute based on review of the replay. NBA officiating SUCKS.

-No more seven game series of any kind. I'd prefer NCAA style of do-or-die, but I'd settle for three game series during the Playoffs, five in the Conference Finals & the NBA Finals.

-Last, but not least; Get rid of the "benefit of the doubt" calls. You just admitted that your officiating is corrupt. Rookie, veteran, superstar, bench warmer, nobody gets special treatments!

After the match, the game should be reviewed and every player who dived should be banned for 1 game.

This I would agree with.

Diving is bad. But a five match ban seems to much for me.

Also, rules should be applied correctly. Over here, it's very common for players to grab each other during a corner kick. The rules say that a penalty should be given.

While it would be correct to award a penatly kick during a situation like this, controversy arises when a referee does it in a match in an Argentina, since almost no referee does it, and the referee who does award it doesn't appear to have a particular criterion to do it. That is, in almost exact situations, he may choose to award it or not in different matches.

Anchoring the putter in golf. Not banning the belly/long putters themselves but you can't anchor the handle to any part of your torso/chin etc (So this means Kuchar's handle upon his arm is fine)

You can't anchor the driver or irons to your torso/chin nor should you the putter... if you're not good at putting, practice more like those who can't chip well have to do...

In Football... I'd add video reviews lasting no longer than 2 minutes for questionable plays... like the NFL, each team has a certain amount of "challenges" for each half...

Also, I'd re-install the rule that the same man that shoots and fails a penalty kick cannot attempt to kick it again...

I would make soccer 10 vs 10 or 9 vs 9. That should increase scoring and get rid of 0-0 games.

I would also make soccer have four 15 minute quarters with a break between quarters instead of two 45 minute halfs. That should keep players fresher allowing them to go all out

NCAA Football playoff that mirrors the NFL's 12 team format. 6 Highest ranked conference champions and 6 highest ranked at large teams. No more then 3 teams per conference. Top 4 in rankings get week 1 bye, 1st and 2nd round played at higher ranked team's home stadium, final 2 rounds played at neutral bowl sites

Basketball. Get rid of the 3 second rule. Allow arm checking again

Remove the "Instigator" rule from NHL. Why? So people who deserve to be punched in the face will get punched in the face, and the puncher wont get this: "If the same player or goalkeeper is deemed to be the instigator of a second altercation in the same game, he shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

When a player receives his third instigator penalty in one Regular season, he is automatically given a game misconduct following that third violation" Copied from http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26336

I'd rather see them take fighting out of the game. Do it like the IIHF, fights = automatic game misconduct. I watch hockey to watch hockey, I don't really care to see fighting. When they start fighting I usually go mix a drink or something.

Remove engine, tire, wing regulations in formula 1 to allow teams to once again engineer cars. That's the only regulation I can think of that killed an entire sport for me.

I know the OP says 1 regulation, so the 1 regulation to overturn would be the ability of the FIA to regulate the mechanics of the car at all.
