I'm fed up with this internet connection.

Can someone please help me figure out why my internet is just... terrible.

Earlier today around 3:00PM my internet was running at 15MBPs. Not bad but come 9:00PM I'm getting Speedtest.net results of

Test 1

Test 2

What the hell is up with this? I'm not the one paying for the internet but I'm right about ready to call the company. I can't even load a website so that I can apply for a job.

It was even worse yesterday running at 0.15MBPs downloading speed and 1.00MBPs uploading speed.

I know a decent amount of people on GTplanet know about networking and all so if you could please help me get some insight on what is going here?

My ISP is Clearwire if you couldn't tell from the Speed Test image above.
(I understand that there is a Speed Test dedicated website already.)

Could be any number of things. Like dice1998 said, call your provider. This is their issue.

There are a couple things you can try in the mean time.

1.) Cycle the power on all equipment.
2.) Connection one device (your computer) directly to your Modem/Router, bypassing any secondary equipment and try your test again.
3.) If you have wifi, make sure no one else is using it.
4.) Run anti-virus scan and make sure an infected computer isn't using up bandwidth.

And again, contact your ISP.

Am I the only one that misread the title as "I'm fed up with the internet"?

On-topic: I would suggest disconnecting for about 20 seconds or so, then try to reconnect. That's usually seems to help me when my Internet goes to hell.

Try the following

Try another Modem so you can rule out this one as bad*²
Run Anti Virus and Anti Spyware scans*²
Call the ISP and ask them to do a line check*¹

If this doesn't work contact your telecommunications ombudsman and complain but you will need to do

But they will want you to call the ISP so they can have a chance to fix the issue.
And if you can tell them you tried another modem and your PC is not infected it just makes the case stronger.

I went through the same sort of issue.

My ISP said there was no line fault despite non stop random disconnections, I went through 5 modems when i had enough i contacted the TIO(Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman) and the next day I got a call from them so I could explain it further.

The next day I got a call from my ISP saying that there was a major line fault out side my house.

Garyfox, there is no line check for Clearwire, as it is typically Wi-Max.

I use to work for Clearwire many years ago, and this kind of performance isn't surprising. I'm not sure if they still do it, but they use to do packet shaping and heavy throttling on users if use was anything above web surfing and email.

Pretty much call them and chew their asses out. Are they still selling service on 1 or 2 year contracts as well?

Mb not MB. Yes there is a (BIG) difference.

What most people have said could fix the problem. It could be something completely different like a sever has gone down an your being re-directed for the time being until it's fixed. Did you choose the correct sever when you did the speed test? Have you exceeded your download for the month and are now capped?

If it's not back to normal in a couple of days (also after trying the mentioned things to try) I would ring ISP an find out what's going on.

Is it consistently this bad at around the same times (like you mentioned 9pm)? If so, sounds to me you have very bad utilisation around that time since it's peak time of everyone using internet in your area. Which if that is the case, unfortunately you can't do much about it unless you swap providers.

However, as people have already suggested, ring up and see what they say is going on. It could be a number of things.

Slashfan
That's how my internet looks all the time. No lie.

+1

Mine is maybe slightly faster than OP's. I live in a small town so I guess that's the issue.

Somewhere around half a year later and it's still acting up.

I don't know what's going on with it but it may be because of throttling due to a-lot of download activity. I have been downloading a-lot of games as of late but this isn't even acceptable. I was playing a game and my ping reached levels of 14k+.. The internet may as well been off. Does anyone know about the ways internet services work through throttling, is it monthly?

Damn that sucks then. Has it been alright up till now or do you have your good days and your bad days?
What's the plan you or on? (eg 8Mb down/1Mb up xxxGb per month)
Maybe it's time for a new ISP :sly:👍.
My connection gets slowed (throttled down) after I cap out my download limit (from 20Mb down to 256k:banghead:, luckily I don't hit it that often).
