i wouldn't call 80 000$ affordable...

the best car ever WILL never happen... we're living in a world of compromise, that's it that's all.

Well one day they might come up with the perfect car to suit everyones needs but thats unlikely...we can always dream I guess.

M5Power, have you ever been in an M5 while racing? Bet not since it sucks ass. As a luxury car its good, as a racer its not. There are other greatly engineered german sports cars out there...

Uh, when would I go racing in any car?

Nah, $69,900.

But you're exactly right -- compromise. There's no best in all categories. By definition, a car cannot be the fastest, cheapest, and most useable.

IMHO i reckon the GTR is the best car under $200,000 AUD, But there is some thing about BMWs i just dont like, might be because there is a hole bunch of rice boys here in sydney who rice them up and think there heros, because there driving bimmers.

i use to own an M5 and i can tell you it was an exellent car. i dont know how you can say it sucks when racing as i've taken it out on numerous track days, believe it or not the M5 will keep up with most things short of a ferrari and it still has the practicality and reliablility of a big BMW saloon. in my opinion its one of the best cars on the market today but thats just me.

Well, yeah, that was the topic for debate.

But why not?

There could be any number of reasons: low ground clearance (GMC fans), high ground clearance (Lotus fans), too slow (TVR fans), too fast (Ford fans), too big (Hyundai fans), too small (Mercedes fans), too boxy (Ferrari fans), too rounded (Volvo fans).... The list just goes on and on. You have to admit it: the M5 is just an awful car. ;)

I think that every car is "best" in one category or another (including those wanting the cheapest damned thing out there). If any car were truly awful in all categories, it wouldn't have sold any, now would it? Given the number of consecutive sold-out years of the M5, that would put it rather high on at least some "best" lists.

Well, just to show how relative the title of "Best Car Ever" is. My "Best Car Ever" goes to the 2002 Porsche 911 GT2. Luggage space is a very nominal thing to me. I also dont like the idea of one car trying to juggle a whole bunch of categories at once. I would rather buy a 911 GT2 becaue 98.9% of the time I am just commuting or driving with a friend with mostly NO luggage or crap with me. If I HAD to go for some long distance trip and I needed luggage space and room for people, even if my $100,000+ car could hold luggage and people I wouldn't want to take it anywhere hauling people and things. I would sooner buy a 1990 Civic 4 door for a trip than take my expensive car all over hell.

So, basically, if I had an M5 which is capable of all that, I STILL wouldn't want to use it for both sides of the spectrum. So why buy it because it can do 2 things pretty well, when I can buy 1 car that can do the thing I do 99% of the time EXTREMELY well. i.e. 911 GT2. The price of a 1990 Civic Sedan would be less than 1-2 options on a GT2 or M5. Have you ever looked at the options list for a 911 Turbo. I believe chrome treatment to the door sill's is a $500 option and a leather wrapped console is a $400 option.
