Race Room CLOSED

Welcome everyone to the first GTPlanet International Autocross competition! This is a 1-Day event that will be held on the old Dunsfold Aerodrome airstrip, better known to you as the Top Gear Test Track. A set of cones will be arranged with multiple gates in the shape of a basic course. Between the second and last gates you will be timed, and your best run out of four will count towards your final result.

This type of racing may also be known as Gymkhana in other parts of the world. For those of you that don't know what autocross is, here is an explanation from the Sports Car Club of America:

SCCA
Solo (or Autocross) events are driving skill contests that emphasize the driver's ability and the car's handling characteristics. This is accomplished by driving a course that is designated by traffic cones on a low hazard location, such as a parking lot or inactive airstrip. While speeds are no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback creates an adrenaline pumping experience. It is like being in a movie chase scene, only you are holding onto the steering wheel instead of a box of popcorn!

Sample Video:

All the information you need to know is posted below. These rules are an early version and are subject to change. If you have any questions feel free to ask, as I am open to comments and/or suggestions to make this as fun as possible for everyone!

Rules
  1. Hitting a cone counts as a 2-second penalty
  2. Missing a cone gate is automatic DQ. At this time, stop your run.
  3. Drivers can make up to four (x4) runs during the day
  4. All runs will be timed using a stop watch by myself
  5. Please stay in room lobby until it is your turn to run
  6. Before exiting track, please drive away from course or stop completely before pressing the Start Button. This is critical! If your car is rolling when you press Start, the AI takes control and could ruin the course!

Event Information
  • Date : Monday September 5th, 2011
  • Time : Room opens at 10AM PST / Closes at 9PM PST (GMT -7)
  • Once in the room, please wait there for further instructions.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you have a steering wheel to compete in this event!

The event will be held in my personal Lounge. I will completely clear my friends list and send out friend requests to those who have signed up a week before the event. Once the event is over, those on my friends list before I cleared the list will remain and everyone else will be deleted.

I will need 2-3 volunteers to sit on different parts of the course and watch for cone hits and/or gate misses. Please PM me if you would like to participate.
  1. Wardez
  2. WanganGhost
  3. Volunteer 3

Prizes
Prizes will be awarded in the following order for each class.
  1. 500,000 Cr. Vehicle, Full Racing Suit / Helmet
  2. 250,000 Cr. Vehicle, Racing Suit
  3. 100,000 Cr. Vehicle, Racing Helmet
*Please keep in mind the trading limit and prizes will be sent out on multiple days.

GT5 Autocross Tips
  1. The starting line contains two cone gates.
    • You start at Gate #1.
    • Timing starts at Gate #2.
    • Running start is to help cars with traction problems.
  2. Each cone you hit is a 2-Second penalty added to your time.
  3. Missing a cone gate is an automatic Disqualification.
    • Upon missing a gate, immediately stop your run.
    • Return to starting area and await instructions.
  4. After passing the finish gate, brake immediately.
  5. Follow painted lines to last cone gate and await instruction.
Sometimes slow is fast. Lifting the accelerator that extra amount to miss a cone is certainly better than hitting the cone!

So psyched for this. Tell Forced about this, he'd be so down to do this.

I'll also volunteer myself as a volunteer :)

this look pretty fun.

Thanks!

Thanks man. Got you down for both spots. I'll head over to his thread right now and let him know. :)

For anyone that wants to practice, I would recommended doing in in your lounge to get the correct physics. You can also semi-practice the course by using the above video as a guide and running an "invisible" course. I will also have my lounge open a couple times between now and the event so people can practice on the real course.

It takes me about 45 minutes to get it set up. 👍

How long will it take you to fix some of it? If it were to be messed up.
I might volunteer as a volunteer. It would be nice to help out. 👍

My sign-up info:

#134 - EliteDreamer

• daibaspeed
• Nissan Fairlady Z (Z34) '08
• CSM

Might change though... but I'll stick with this.

Depends on how bad you mess it up.

I'll add you to the list.

Also, I am in my lounge right now practicing if anyone wants to join. Just send me a friend request if you're not already on it.

I still have my lounge open for another 30 minutes or so if anyone wants to get some practice in.

I'm now out of this room. Will probably get another one set up next weekend. I'll update this thread when it's available.

I would like to sign up

Are you going to open your lobby or something anytime soon? I'm finally going to get on soon and I'd like to do some autocross.

I won't have a course set up until next weekend. Giving how late I get home from work and how long it takes to set up the course, we wouldn't have much time.

Oh ok. Time to wait. :grumpy:

I'm trying to figure out a way to practice. I keep forgetting the course every time I look away from my laptop. I should just set up the cones myself and then try the course.

Also, if downforce is prohibited, then why allow race cars in some of the classes?

Just don't try an Evo, :D

Good solid picks: NSX type R, S2000 (especially the GT1), Lotus Elise 111R (there's also the RM if you're doing the prep. Class), GT-R R34, RX8, any STi ('07 Hatch is a beast), M3 GTR, MR-2... Just random ideas for you guys.

I was sure it said prohibited. :(
Sorry about that.

If I had the 320i race car I would drive that.

Couple things:
Will we have a chance to "walk" the course?
And when you hit pause, I believe it ghosts you.

I'd be down, but I'm not sure if my PS3 will be fixed in time.
So put me down as a maybe in a Volkswagen Golf R32, in the street stock class.

The R35 GT-R in the Modified class is a beast too. :D

Edit:

Couple things:
Will we have a chance to "walk" the course?
And when you hit pause, I believe it ghosts you.

Just make sure to be around for the practice rooms so you can get a feel for the course. It's relatively unchanged from the YouTube video as well, so watch it as many times as you see fit.

Also, when you pause the game while your car is still in motion, the AI takes over. If you pause while the car is at a complete stop it doesn't move. Best thing to do is just drive away from the course and then press the start button.
