Incredible game...future for the series?

Hey guys,
Just registered today, I'm a new user on the board, but I've been lurking around for a little while, just wanted to say hello to everyone here.

I have a DFGT and picked up Shift 2...wow, have to say I am blown away with this game. Post-patch=AWESOME. I have been playing GT5 for a few months and haven't touched it since I got this game. Dirt 3 is amazing as well, lots of fun with that just, started with it. Put in a few hours today, couldn't put it down either. 👍👍👍

I know Shift 2 is the second game in the series (never played the first), but this game is my new love, as well as Dirt 3.

Is there any information about any long term plans to continue with the Shift series? I never got serious with the racing genre, but having my first wheel with the DFGT has changed my entire perspective of racing games, and gaming in general. I do not know much about SMS, but I wrote them a short e-mail saying "Thank You" for putting out something this awesome...I hope this series continues on.

Hi there, and welcome. 👍 Not quite sure if there will be a Shift 3, but SMS is already working on some other projects as we speak.

If you haven't done so already, I would advise you to get the Legends DLC pack, it adds a bunch of classic race cars and tracks. 👍

i don't think there will be a future, i heard it's not selling well and in fact online lacks of people... while in this forum the majority are guys that can't even look futher than GT5 or Forza even if this game is way better that any racing game outhere on console. The problem is also the name: need for speed.. say nfs here and you got equal to arcade crap.

Imo there won't be a **** 3 because it's too serious for 15years old arcade gamers and considered as crap by "hardcore" players that they think gt5 or forza are a simulation.. While the F1 licence and codemaster name are too strong to be beaten.

I don't think there will be a future for the series.

In the economy now a days you need to sell games to keep a franchise going and this has not sold that well. The game was fun,but the team rushed a really good game and it didn't get patched until many had already jumped ship and went to other games.I stuck around til after the patch(s),but i too had to jump ship for something better.

I don't believe there will be a Shift 3 but I believe something new is coming. Hopefully better and with the same feeling as Shift 2.

And you REALLY should get the Legends DLC 👍

SMS were widely (no idea how accurate this was) rumoured to be rebooting PGR for MS, but whatever they were working on, it fell through at the last minute (after contracts were signed). So now there's the "community funded" racing game idea and the mobile/web games studio doing stuff - no idea what else. I would count on seeing them do something else in a year or two though - they are the only game studio I can think of that survived their publisher, and their own studio going bankrupt, and the loss of their game license in short order - so they definitely know how to hustle :)

Couldnt agree more, it is a fantastic game, its had some of the best stand out moments for me ever in gaming, simply a great game which will be left unloved by some many cause it was pigeon holed incorrectly from the off by EA / sms.........

They should never of tried to say it was a FORZA / GT beater......cause its not that type of game.

They should of just gone with the racing angle cause its in the racing department it destroys Forza and GT5 with utter ease and wild abandon...

problem was if you opmare to Forza and GT the fanboys who can only ever imagine liking one driving game, could compare car counts and say x is better than y blah blah blah.....

Shift 2 owns both forza / gt in racing...... the physics are a mute point cause half of these gt fanboys are about 12 and have never driven a car, i'd honestly say that for me Shift 2 has some real hidden gems within its physics which step above GT5, but alas, as we know, GT5 is actually more real than life, in fact i've driven a car , got out and said..."hmmm, its not as realistic as GT5...." :sly:

Its a real shame if we donjt get shift 3 but i will be playing Shift 2 for a long time i reckon. cant wait for Forza 4 but shift 2 will now always have a special place in my gaming memories.... if some people dont get cause they are TEAM GT5 then its really their loss.

When you get gimps complaining that the trees on the Nur'ring dont look as good as the ones in GT5, you kinda start thinking the GT5 fanboys are a bunch of planks...... really who gives a ****.

Yeah i remember when shift 2 came out if you so much as mentioned gt5 and shift in the same thread it was almost cause for a ban. Its really a same I think alot of people missed a good game because a few here bashed it so bad. Oh well we all know gt5 is the game to judge all games from now on.:banghead:

Never heard they are not planning on a S3. Never heard they are.

I dont see us not getting another game in the series. Will it be called Shift3? Maybe or maybe not, but I am guessing another game with the same engine etc. will be made.

Please at the very least be accurate when you post.

The only time staff took action was when threads were dragged off-topic by GT vs S2U discussions, so please don't imply otherwise.

The staff did that principally to stop people attacking S2U without reason and a good number of threads aimed at doing so were locked and action taken against members trolling simply to attack S2U.

Any accusation that the staff (and as such the site) undermine or allow other games to be attacked without recourse is simply nonsense.

You want to discuss Shift 2 VS GT5 then feel free to do so, in the thread of that topic....

... the only thing the staff object to is when other threads are dragged off-topic.

Sorry I should of been more clear. I didnt mean mods where banning post. Just that it was hard to get a good thread going when shift first came out. Some people where here bashing the game and never played it. Sorry for the confusion.

They still need to fix the support for clutch specially when they released the drag and Legends DLC and they would get close to a better game. It still has a lot of little "what where the devs thinking" moments in the game.

I guess I'm one of the only ones who think there will be a future for the series. I played, and love the original Shift (it's the only platinum trophy I have) and Shift 2 has pretty much improved on every single aspect over the first game and if the trend continues I think we'll have a contender to the GT/Forza throne. Don't get me wrong, I think Shift 2 is great and has things I wish Forza and GT had, but I think overall both Forza and GT give more playability and replayabilty.

Anyway, here's to hoping for Shift 3, although I'd prefer GTR3 first. :sly:

Thanks for the welcome and the replies!

Yeah...I hope this series does continue on. I don't want to start a flame war or anything by mentioning GT5 in the same topic. I am new here, so I don't really know what topics have been beaten to death, what should not be said, etc., but I'll learn eventually.

I am disappointed that the game didn't sell that well/isn't selling well. I am hoping that those who did not spend too much time with the game the first time will pick it up again and give it another go with the new patch.

SMS...they do not seem to have many games out for consoles. Do they develop games mainly for the PC?

Apparently some of the guys who work at SMS used to work for SimBin, who are some of the most highly regarded PC sim developers. They are the guys behind GTR, GT Legends and GTR2.

Don't worry about starting a flame war, they happen by themselves. Even if you don't mention GT or Forza, someone always brings it up and proceeds to bash everything else. I enjoy all the games so it doesn't matter to me.

Oh, and welcome to the site.

Unfortunately, I fear there will be no shift 3...
( in the same way we never got race pro 2)

I think I'm going to have to ditch consoles and go buy a pc, at least it's looking a little more rosy there with rfactor 2, and simbins offerings

It's a pity, I love consoles for gaming ... Oh well ISRs review of 3d sims looks appealing :)

I tried searching for some sales figures on Shift 2 Unleashed so far, but couldn't come up with any. Anybody better at Google?

EDIT: I was better than I thought: http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/46563/need-for-speed-shift-2/

Apparently, they sold about 190,000 copies so far on PS3, 180,000 on Xbox 360 and 32,000 on PC. So 400,000 copies in ten weeks total.

I was just about to post all that.

400K copies seems like it sold pretty well, although I don't know what the gaming industry defines as selling well. I wonder how well the original Shift sold? Off to look that up now.

Parker

Edit: Wow, apparently in the first 10 weeks the original Shift sold 1,037,636 copies on the PS3 alone, worldwide that is. It sold 255,756 in the first 10 weeks on the PS3 in the USA.

According to this...

Yeah, can't blame people for not buying Shift 2 after Shift 1. I didn't buy Shift 2 either until after the first two patches, and even then I was doubting it a lot.

The only reson shift sold so well at first was due to it being the only nfs game available at that time. people were used to the usual cycle of buying a nfs every fall so they thought that this was something new to try like nfs pro street. This game had to compete with hot pursuit. It also had to compete with gt5. Many people bought shift so they wuldn't go crazy waiting for gt5. It was used more as a game to pass time until gt5 came out. I'm not bashing the game though. i loved the first and and shift 2 about the same but people are having a hard time playing a game that isn't all arcade or all simulation. They can't have something in between so thats why it in't popular.

I don't have the game, looks good though, but maybe instead of NFS: Shift 3, it should be like Shift 3

Where did ya read this?

VGChartz is pretty much pulled out of their ass. It's actually even less likely to be accurate than it was back when it acquired its reputation for inaccuracy, since now NPD have cracked down on their numbers being published and they can't just skim a real retail survey anymore :)

That said - I would definitely agree S2U looks to have sold less well than the first game - but how much of that was down to retail being slower in March vs September I don't know. It also fell right into a hole in NPD's survey period, where the first 2 days sales were in March and the rest in the April period (literally 1 day of Shift 1 sales were enough to take it to the top of gFK's UK chart). But other than saying "it did less than 1.1 million in march, and less than 190k in april" I don't think there are really any solid figures.

FWIW the NPD for Shift 1 was something like 175k+165k for the first 15 days in the US in september.

Any other sources you would recommend for sales figures then? It was the only one I could find with my limited Google skills.

Neogafs NPD threads are pretty much the only thing I would use if you don't want to be laughed at, I don't know if there's something as good for EU sales based on GfK.

Unfortunatly there is no plans for Shift 3... in fact as soon as the release date of SU2 SMStudios started letting employees go out the door. The new tire model is just that a new tire model that didnt make it into SU2 and there is, currently, no specific game in mind to incorporate it, from what I could gather...

In fact SMS dont have any work planned or any contract for a new game so they are starting a Community-Funded Race Sim in orther to have something to do.

Unless you have some inside knowledge that you can share with us I would say that you are wrong about this... dont get me wrong - I would really like you to be right because I enjoyed the first Shift very much but I like the second one much better and I would be looking foward to the third even more... but you shouldnt misslead people like that...
