I imagine some scenario where bob calls in a sickie to play GT7 only to discover it wont play till the next day. Sickie was wasted!

This update is not worth a sickie.

Bob can play the next day.
GT7 updates always happens on a Thursday at a specific 2hour window .

"Installable at" doesnt make a difference as there also is server maintenance.
But actually it is a benefit, because downloading speeds have been distributed among all players who have logged in at different times yesterday instead of having them download all at the same time.

The only thing it does is that it allows people to pre load the update. Especially helpful if you have a slower connection.
It does not prevent you from doing anything. The game can be played just fine before the actual installation time is reached.

If you are calling in sick just to play a game, then you are the problem, not the game.
