Intermediate Tires vs. Rain Tires

Is it just me or does it seem like you get more traction on the Intermediate racing tires than you do for the rain tires?

I just started the Dream Car Championship (lvl 24) and I used the Intermediate tires on the RM Vette for the Monza track and did quite well. Finished first. Then for LA Sarthe, I put on my Rain Tires and the car was all over the place. Then I tried it with Intermediate on the same track just to see and I was driving alot better.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this, or is it because of the type of car that I'm using?

Depends how wet and how hard it's raining. If it's heavy rain, rain tires should be better but if it's just wet, intermediates could be better.

The AI always start with ordinary racing tyres, and drive a lap at low pace before changing. This is something PD got wrong apparently. I'm sure professional racing teams would not make this mistake :)

I gained a lap on the entire grid on the Monza track in B-spec Formula GT championship. Was struggelig with the lap times using rain tyres from the start, so i changed to intermediate. That didn't sit well with the driver, and he wanted to change back to rain straight away.

Was raining, but not really pouring. Not sure when you should use intermediate? Perharps if it stops raining, and the track is still damp?

Seems my driver automatically went for a pit stop when it stopped raining. It was still dripping. Think you'll just have to look at your lap times to decide between rain and intermediate..

Yea, I just noticed that while I was driving it seemed that I got more traction with the intermediate tires in the rain than with the rain tires. This was on La Sarthe in a RM'd Vette. It just seemed weird to me that my rain tires reminded me of the Top Gear Lotus challenge.:scared:

Wet tyres are for very heavy rain / standing water on the track.

intermediate tyres are for light rain / a slightly wet or damp track / or a drying track / wet track with no standing water

On a drying track be sure to drive through some wet patches to try and cool the intermediate's (if the game works like that :P)

It is all to do with how much water each tyre can clear, the wet tyres have deeper grooves so can clear more water, the intermediates have slightly shallower grooves, so can clear water but just not as much.

One would think that rain tires would be faster in heavy rain, but I don't think this is the case with the game - yet another annoying PD glitch taking away from an insanely epic game.

There was maximum rain (similar to the Nurburgring challenges) at Suzuka w/ my F1 car. Intermediates were about 3s faster than full wets.

I did a test on the dry (during an enduro when I was 5+ laps ahead) and the intermediates aren't even that bad. If you have any question at all during one of the tarmac rallies (weather change w/ advanced) I would just go w/ intermediates.

Big time BS.
I'm a retired motorcycle road racer.
I drive like I rode, and I'm pretty damn good in the rain.
Not so with GT5. Full down force, soft suspension set up,
means nothing to the game, slippin and sliding all over the place.
I'll have to give the intermediates a try, but in B-Spec full rains are faster.

B-Spec/AI physics may very well be different than A-spec. This is certainly true when it comes to dirt/snow physics in the rallies.

I've also found that a soft setup that SHOULD be faster in the rain actually isn't that much faster. IRL I'll soften up my rear shocks all the way, and maybe even disconnect the rear sway bar in heavy rain. In the game I change the settings and the car is a bit slower than with a fast dry setup.

I tested the theory of waiting a lap to pit.
Started on intermediates {A-Spec} grip seemed to be the same
as the last race {same track-Monza} that I just ran with rains.
Pitted ahead of the field and swapped to full rains.
No difference.
Yet the next race was dry, I started on slicks, the field started on rains.
At the end of lap 1, I only had a 10 second lead.
Same track, same car in B-Spec, it was over 30 seconds.

so what's the smurfin' deal?

just raced at Monza in a light rain.
i started the race in Rain tires, but the b-spec driver immediately wanted to pit. so he does, and i fit him with Intermediate tires... but the b-spec driver immediately wanted to pit, so i put him back in Rain tires... but i'll be dipped if the b-spec driver didn't want to pit again. so i put the moron in Racing Hard and cancelled every pit until the end of the race.

so how do you tell what tires to use when?
and has anyone else had the problem i did with my b-spec boob?

I haven't done it yet, but I read somewhere on the forums that the game is glitched and slicks are actually faster then intermediates or rain tires even in the pouring rain. Give that a try and report back

I don't know if its only me but no matter how hard it's raining, in Aspec, I get better traction with the Intermediate tires than the Rain tires in GT5. This just doesn't make sense to me.

tested and, for me at least, entirely untrue.
i forced him to race the remainder of the race in racing slicks and he was on a slip-and-slide the whole time. lap times were so slow, in fact, that in the FGT he actually had competition breathing down his neck the entire time.

Similar observations when trying race tires on in the rain. it does not work. Now maybe street tires but not been bothered to test vs rain tires.

Either way if it is raining i put on rain tires. Like the tires say, if it is showering inters, though i do think a few years back when f1 still had tire competitions that one companies inters were actually better in heavy rain than the other companies full rain tires...so maybe pd watched formula one that year and saw all the oddities that cropped up when you had 2 companies racing to develop the best tires every given races for each track. It sure was never boring when they did that and was kinda as much fun to watch as the actual racing.

Yes, slicks is way faster than intermidiates or rain.. It's so sad... In A-spec that is.

So slicks are quicker in the rain than wet tyres in A spec?? I think intermediates have more grip. (I have tried the intermediates and rain tyres)

Yes slicks in ASpec give you more grip in the wet.
I made a thread asking what rain tires are for when they don't work.
The usual suspects put me down for asking what rain tires are for.
I had the last laugh when they hit a tree.

I saw noticeable improvement in Racing Soft in the rain in A Spec at Suzuka......

I really don't see why PD made such an involved endurance side of the game but made it as hard as they possibly can for you to manage your car, they have not even put in adjustable tire pressures so you can alter the pressure to manage the tire temps.
It does not even have a track condition report of any kind for you to make decisions from.

I like the game I really do but I just cant help but get this Need For Speed Shift feeling from playing it and I don't mean the physics I just mean the overall feel from the game.
PD need to take a note from great PC racing sim's such as GTR 2, GTR-EVO, R-Factor.

GTR-EVO you can do almost anything I don't just mean anything as in the tuning the settings side of the game, I mean things like if you are too harsh with your car during a race your engine can lose power due to increased strain, if you down shift from 5th to 2nd or 1st your engine goes ''BOOM'' and thats just the icing on the cake.

One way or another PD better get them selves into gear and release some killer updates to this game as for what I have seen and heard about GTR 3 and R-Factor 2 GT5 is not going to be the best driving game for long.

I missed this thread when it first appeared. I got spanked at monza last night, I chose rain because it was raining heavy, everyone else went inters. Sigh. I hope PD are aware of these issues.

This is a much discussed topic in other threads (maybe search on tyres or tires).
I will summarise - in an Aspec series race use Racing Softs whatever the weather, as the grip option is set to low by default and you cannot change it.

I might give that a try....last time I had rain when I redid the Super GT race at Suzuka I used full wets and it was plenty fast enough to beat the AI on wets(no ABS, no less) with a stock GT500 NSX.

I like the fact that they give you option, but its really hard to judge in-game what tire you are supposed to use. Its not like in real life you can see standing water...

Same experience for me. Slicks were 3 sec/lap faster than rains on Suzuka in the rain
edit..Since I'm running 1000km Suzuka did some testing and intermediates definitely better still... a further 8 sec of lap time when she lightens up

I'll try a few races in practice mode where I can set the grip-reduction to "real" and see if it makes any difference.. Report coming in about 8 hours.. Have some B-specs races to handle first :)

fwiw; there has been extensive testing done in an earlier thread; arcade, practice mode...

Alright I am in the middle of a wet Suzuka 1000km, using a stock GT500 GTR no aids, ABS or TCS....The weather is rainy but I think its not the wettest I've seen. I started the race on race soft, can get to about 2:09.xxx, then as the tire wears the lap time dropped to about ~2:14-2:16. When I can't hold it consistently under 2:15, I went in for a tire change. The race menu recommend intermediate so I went for that. The tire definitely seems to have less grip compare to race soft. Especially longitudinally as I don't have as much braking capacity and the tires are more easily locked up under braking. And more wheel spin on corner exit. The ultimate cornering grip seems similar as I can hold the same speed and gear through 130R. The best lap I can manage when its up to temp(which it doesn't really help that much) is a 2:11. I was also interested in tire wear since I wonder if that'll help me make a choice with regards to what to use. The Soft lasted about 24 laps before I start to have to really nurse it in the slow corners. The intermediate was worse and in about 12 laps the lap time can't get under 2:15 with any regularity. So I drove in again and this time I went for full wet(menu still recommend Intermediate). These tires are much worse as they lack even more longitudinal grip and low speed cornering grip is horrible. Through the long up hill left hander leaving the esses before Degner the car is constantly sideway in 4th gear. I've only managed to go 5 laps before I got tired of these. Best time I could managed was a 2:20-ish. I am switching back to Race soft to see if the condition actually got worse.

Note that regardless what tires I use you can still lead AI pretty handily...even on the worse tire I've tried I can still pull 1-2 sec on them.

I came across an interesting spin on things while doing the dream car championship in B-spec tonight: pouring rain with a bone dry track at Monza.

I saw that it was pouring rain so I sent my Bob out with a maxed-out Peugeot 908 and rain tires. I couldn't figure out what was wrong as he was getting outbraked at every corner by lesser cars and confused as to why his tires were completely toast after only 5 laps. There was constant raindrops on the windscreen and the wiper was working away like crazy, but strangely, I wasn't seeing any spray being kicked up by anyone. So anyway, I sent him to the pits to get intermediate tires. The PIT AI decided to ignore that order and went with hard racing tires instead. Good choice, as Bob immediately proceeded to beat his best lap by 10 seconds from pit lane. Ridiculous.

Even after the update (spec 2.0), i get more traction with the intermediate tires in the wet! I'm playing the Suzuka endurance and the rain indicator shows 100%...so i believe this means hard raining...but nooo with the rain tires i'm drifting all over the place.
