Is a clutch necessary?

  • It's overrated, and definitely not needed.

So basically, I am looking at purchasing a new wheel for the upcoming GT5 game. I have already been playing it with the older DFP which is nice but I am thinking of upgrading to the DFGT. However I have one basic question. Minus the price difference, is a clutch and the different shift patterns with the G25 a make it or break it for most of you guys?

Edit: I don't know how to drive a stick very well. I understand the concept but I am curious if these racing wheel setups with clutches is pretty similar to the real thing. Could I, in a sense, learn how to drive a stick well with the G25 over the DFGT which doesn't have a clutch obviously.

The basic jist from, 6 votes only :( , seems to be that a clutch is nice but possibly the DFGT with the added feature of the on-the-fly spec change and being built from the ground up for the game is the better choice. At least it is the cheaper one haha. Thanks to all those who voted, but I will keep the poll open in case others want to state their opinion.

DFGT is better then G25 in wheel alone.
G25 is better with pedals and shifter..

So go with cheaper DFGT

Clutch. it's not necessary, so far GT5Prologue with clutch, it only works as ON and OFF button, it's not pressure sensitive, maybe in FULL game it will be.

It also can mess you up when you are lets say racing online with 2 other people next to you, you get nervous and miss shift and mess up the whole race..

It's neat, but not necessary, but you can switch gears way faster over paddle shifters.

So if you really want Clutch but for price of DFGT.. Get Fanatec Budget wheel

Well as I said, I wanted to get better at driving a stick considering I know how but don't have one to practice on. I was wondering if GT5P with the G25 and clutch is pretty realistic in terms of driving a stick. Also, the fanatec are expensive if they are PS3 compatible. Cheapest one I saw started at $300. Regardless, thanks for the input all the same.

I driven G25 and Fanatec stick in GT5P, and other games.. its same feeling as other games.. but GT5Prologue punishes you if you don't use clutch properly, i like it..
So yeah you can learn how to use it.. but Clutch works as ON and OFF button in GT5p so far, when u press it half way it works.. in other PC games, it's progressive on how much you press on it.. But you can learn how to drive a stick shift car. But at same time I never driver stick shift in my life.

in rfactor, with all assists off, some cars don't downshift optimally under heavy braking if you don't healtoe/blip throttle while downshifting. It'd be cool to see the same thing in gt5

I am going to sound like an idiot but could you explain that in lame man terms? I know the basics of driving a stick but I don't know the lingo per sei.

Heel toe means that while you have the clutch pressed and you are braking, you tap the accelerator to keep the revs up. This makes going down a gear while braking smoother.

Ahh, so you use your heel on the gas and your toe on the clutch then your left foot is pushing the clutch all the way in so you can shift properly? I have to try that without the car on just to see how it feels. Thanks though.

Edit: Also, it's a close race between a clutch needed for gaming vs not needed but nice. Both lean toward getting the G25 with the clutch...

Sciz:

I would say go with the G25. The clutch isn't realistic feeling at all in GT5P, but I would still say that using the H-shifter is enjoyable & WILL help you become accustomed to manual shifting IRL.

All round, the G25 is a much nicer wheel than the DFGT. It looks & feels great - leather wrapped & steel  - the pedals are much better, & the H-shifter, while not great, is still fun to use. If you're going to spend a lot of time sim-racing, it's definitely worth the extra $100, quite aside from the clutch issue.

Yes a clutch is necessary. If you are using a wheel with the clutch and you shift without the clutch what happens? Does it actually make a grinding gear or does it go into gear even if you dont use the clutch? I have been waiting for a really good wheel that comes with a clutch before I make the purchase.

G25 all the way, no question about it if you have some money in your pocket, back in GT3/GT4, i was driving a DFP, pretty same thing to DFGT, they only made an upgrade on FFB delivery with his single motor and some minor global adjustements, oh yeah, nearly forgot, you got a fantastic horn too.......:dunce:

Im driving my G25 for 2 years now, im a drifter and im putting a lot of stress on it and ive got no problem at all, but extra work drifting need from the wheel maybe make me lose 15% of my FFB.

G25 have 2 motors for the FFB, the H gate shifter (a LOT of fun), and for me, the best part of G25, the pedals set, with is different resistance for each pedals, clutch, brake, gaz, nothing to compare with DFGT, and On/off ingame clutch or not, just get the timing right combine with the H gate shifter its much more funny and real than DFGT. And G25 can be modified in many ways if you want, custom shift knob to completely inverse your pedals kit and mount it like you want.

PS: I'm working right now on my third modification on my G25, and mod#04,#05 and #06 coming soon, im waiting for my brand new G25 to take appart the old one, stay tuned

Sounds good. I think I will go with the G25. I will look at how people have made the shifter a "stiffer" feel because I have heard it's very loose stock. Keep me up to date on your modifications and post pics or something. I will add you to keep in touch. Thanks everyone for the input.

It´s not needed not even in LFS which is the sim that benefits the most from a clutch. In the ISI titles it´s hardly modelled at all. iRacing same thing. But it´s nice to have since some sims and even some not so sims like Test Drive Unlimited have settings that forces you to use it

I would say Wait for FULL GT5 release. Maybe by then wheel will be cheaper and Logitech might come out with something new, or Fanatec might drop prices for TURBO S (works on every console and PC)

With Prologue, it's not worth to buy a wheel with clutch just for this game. I mean its a super blast to play with wheel and clutch, but wait for FULL game, you really wont miss out that much on Clutch.

clutch isnt necessary at least not in GT5P
But if your planning on playing pc sims , g25 all the way.
The clutch in gt5p is just... lol

I plan on getting it by the end of the year if GT5 comes out or not. Hopefully it's slated for a Christmas 2009 release. If not then it will be very early next year, like February. I will see if anything comes out by that point but for now it looks like G25 is the way to go for an all purpose good wheel.
