Is gt5 TOO expensive?

I wrote this aiming to clear my thoughts, and learn bout others opinions. So please, I respectfully ask that you remain reasonable and polite at all times. This is not a negative point of view to the game, simply, a discussion.
Thank you.

I'll start simple. Are you getting your money worth in Gran Turismo 5?
After much reflection I reached a conclusion. The answer is, NO. Want to know why? Then please, keep reading.

It all started in November 2010. after many years in the development (nearly 6 years) the most anticipated title in the PlayStation finally gets released to the public. Only for the die hard fans to find a half finish product. Surely you know what I'm talking about, it has been long enough for a lot of people to have their say on this, so I won't go into details on this.

One of the things that got me upset, was the Signature Edition of the game. Man I want that thing so bad! This packaged not only brings you the game you where so dearly waiting for, but it also brings a scale model, a book, and among other cool stuff that any GT fan would love to have. Plus, you get the all famous chrome line and stealth cars that everyone envies. This edition of the game came at a incredible high retail price of €179.99/£180.

The spec 2.0
This was a great deal for fans all around the world. GT5 got bigger, better, and much more enjoyable. Spec 2.0 promised to deliver the game we should have had long ago. And in some way, it kinda did.

Also, for the first time, we get DLC. Of course, this being the first time, Polyphony Digital had to tackle this with caution, so the DLC was something good, and yet not too risky.

The first DLC, launched on October 2011. More cars, and two new tracks, paints and suits for your driver avatar. There was enough for everyone to be happy with.

Then, as time progressed, more DLC became available. That's great isn't it? Well, not really, and let me tell you why...

Even though you are adding new cars to the game, there isn't a great deal you can actual do with them. Don't get me wrong! I love the fact that the game got more cars to an already huge, and fantastic collection. But please, be reasonable, don't jump into conclusions, or simply copy others. Think for yourself, and think hard. What are you doing right now with those DLC cars?

Combined price of all the DLC since October 2011 until the most recent 27th July 2012 is nearly €40.

And it's not like you're getting much out of it anyway. I mean, at least for every car or track pack we could get some PSN trophies, right? Like, achieving a certain speed on the SSRX, or beating a lap time in each variation of montegi. If not trophies, at least some use like new events.

I bet what you're thinking right now, "don't like it, don't buy it", however, here's the kicker, I actually DO like it. So why am I complaining I hear you saying? I'm not complaining, far from it, I am simply putting things into perspective. and hopefully make people realize the something needs to be done

Now, so far the combined price tag of Gran Turismo 5 is of €220! That's incredible! All that money so that you can have everything that has been released...so far.

Academy Edition
Oh yeah, because now with this Academy Edition, priced at €29.99 (very decent price I admit, very rarely games go lower than this as the second hand sale system is not available in most countries yet) you get all those DLC (expect montegi) plus, and exclusive car. Now, you want that car. You do, don't you? Well add another €30 and you spent €250 all together.

Assuming of course that you already have a PS3, unlike many, who waited years for GT5 so that it could justify the purchase of a PS3...and a wheel...then a place to mount the wheel...see where I'm going with this? Good, because I don't feel like looking up prices of PS3 back then and wheels.

So, the conclusion. With all this money spent by fans around the world, why, I ask politely, why aren't I getting my money worth? It will only be worth this much money if the game gets some common sense as a DLC...probably sponsored by Nissan, and then gets delayed.

Sorry for the bad joke, but it's not like PD has had a very good communication with their customer either.

*all prices and products mentioned here are available within European region. No other products or promotional packs have been made reference here.*<<This is purely my point of view, and does not represent hat or negativity towards the Polyphony Digital team, sony, or any one linked directly to Gran Turismo 5>>

If you're going for a value point of view, you wouldn't have bought the signature edition. You bought that because you wanted it. (And I'm sure I didn't pay that much when I pre-ordered mine. I can't recall exactly, but I think it was £130)

But anyway...

And how long have you played it for? How much is that per hour?

Cheaper than a movie I'd bet.

I've got the signature edition, a normal edition, and no doubt I may purchase the new Academy edition too. I also have all the DLC (twice in the case of the paints) and I don't think it's been a waste of money.

Not a waste of money at all to me. I Have the collectors edition.
I would have happily spent money buying the signature edition if I had had the money at the time, even if I did I would have still got my moneys worth.

I have played the game almost religously since its release and have got more than my moneys worth out of it.

The Spec 2.0 and Academy are for players who have not got DLC or the game to catch up so there is no need to buy that unless you haven't previously bought the DLC.

No.

Plus, that academy car will not be exclusive I'm sure but even if it was why would you pay for the new game just to get what is essentially the same as the car we already have from last year?

The game is only as expensive as you make it and for me that's only the original copy of the game + the Spa DLC.

Not expensive at all. I purchased mine 43e when it released, then all DLC about 40e and played almost everyday since release.
(Got also all stealths and chromelines without buing Signature edition :sly: )

100% Worth of money 👍

Say other game what you can enjoy 2 years?

Bought the Signature Edition and all the DLC's (including paint pack 3 times).

In my opinion it was not a waste of money.

Considering the $$ I'd waste doing things other than GT5, this game is a bargain... even after buying the CE and all the DLC.

Is GT5 worth it's money? In the beginning, yes. But with discs with free DLC and full-prize-payers having to pay for what others get for free, I'd say no. Luckily for PD they released that Academy edition just in time (I can buy it the day after my birthday :D ) so I can laugh a little louder in the end.. Though I'm still not forgiving them for making me buy 2 useless standard discs for more money than the new disc including DLC :grumpy:

Not a waste of money here. I bought the Collector's Edition at launch for $100, $40 for a second copy when my 60gig died along with GT5 in it, and have purchased all the DLC to date. My investment is around $170. I figure I have 500 plus hours of seat time since then and that may be a conservative estimate(probably closer to 1000 hours in reality). That puts me at .34 per hour for my favorite hobby, pretty good deal for me I would say, especially since that number goes down every time I play. Factor in wheels and equipment I've purchased that number goes up but I've done so out of enjoyment and immersion.

I'm sure it is too much for some people, but when you play as much as some of us do it is hard to find a better deal for the entertainment factor.

I bought a tv for €1000 which costs only €500 now.

I thought it was worth it a year ago so it was not to expencive.
It's just the way it works.

I've spent approximately $500 USD on this game(including a G27). I've logged 28,026 miles. That's a little over a penny per mile. Since I have no way to calculate or quantify the time I've put into this game I'll say this: I've logged approximately 700-800 hours in this game easy. I bought my PS3 when they were still $699 USD. I also see value in that purchase. I've since had it replaced with a slim. For my money, gaming is an affordable hobby as compared to many other more expensive hobbies.

Cost=/= Value
GT5 Value is high for me because I play it regularly and accept its flaws in exchange for a satisfying hobby.

I look at it in terms of amount of hours played per £ or $ etc spent on the game.
I also look at other game titles for comparison NFS1&2, F12011.
For me GT5 has given value for money over & over again. I bought it in December 2010 and it has been a near daily event ever since.

The only issue for me is for the folks who, for whatever reason, cannot connect online. If it wasn't for being able to connect online (only a year ago for me), this game would have died a miserable death - remember the smoking tires at high speed?

Compared to other titles, GT5 has something special. I love the other titles but GT5 has something - to borrow a song title from The Who - I Can't Explain.

Great game, great value, long may it evolve!

I haven't played GT5 much lately, and will admit to having some very big issues with it in its current form, but even after buying the Collector's Edition ($100 here) and all DLC minus the Motegi pack, I wouldn't call it too expensive, considering the amount of enjoyment it's provided. Do I have other games I think have given me more enjoyment-per-dollar? Sure. But GT5 - and most racing games, by their nature - has a near-infinite replayability. It's pretty cheap entertainment.

:boggled:

$90 for Collectors Edition + $40 DLC = $130
Number of days since North America Release = 609
GT5 cost per day: $0.21 USD
Seasonal Content added Weekly: Free!
GT5 Value: Priceless!!!

Edit: My only complaint would be not being able to get all the Stealth cars. :grumpy:

I understand we're your going with this, but, I cannot agree. I have started playing GT5 a lot less lately, probably three times a week, that said though, games by their nature live very short "lives". No more than a year in total I would say. So for a game to still be grabbing so much time off so many people after what, two, nearly three years, is quite an accomplishment and is a testament to PD.

Think about other games that get released, other AAA games, call of duty for instance, how many people still play WoW? Or even MW2 for that matter? Nowhere near as many as did, say 6 months in.

So compared to other AAA games, yes it is worth probably double it's money, although I wouldn't like to tell PD or Sony that!

As a stand alone title, which GT5 is, because their isn't another single game in the PS3's library that is remotely similar, until project C.A.R.S is released, it is also worth it.

Let's see what happens when another title is released that can compete with GT5. Which I'm not sure Sony will allow.

Bought the regular edition just day after launch and been playing ever since, started with GT wheel, then bought the G27 wheel and having no regrets, took off the seat from a Datsun Bluebird to create a "custom" bench.

I cant name any other game I've spend nearly 2 years into and still keep enjoying it.

:-/

Oh yes £20 is way too much for the game, dlc and exclusive car in the academy edition.

"I respectfully ask that you remain reasonable and polite at all times. "

Sarcasm does not count as an opinion.

Thank you all your opinions, and above all (expect for our friend here) thank you for keeping your posts clean of hate and mindless points.

However, I feel like my words may have been received in a negative way. I apolagize for that, so please, allow me to clearafy

I am a collector, so, I would like to collect every car available in the game. I have already done that. So, naturally, I would now like to own the chrome and stealth cars, plus this new GT-R that will be coming along with the Acedemy Version. Regardless, it's one more to collect, and it is my objective to get it. In order to do so, I will have to spend money to purchase a game that I already have.

I rarely race online, and when I do, I don't enjoy it. Not because of the game itself or my driving technique, I'm just not lucky enough to enter a room with decent people.
I raced to the store the day GT5 came out. Spent the first year playing offline, so I will enjoy what the game can give me straight out of the box instead what I need to pay extra for it.

In other words. I am currently out of a job, so I can't afford what ever new content gets released. Every time I pick up the game there's not much left for me to do since I have already completed the game (yes, all endurance, both A-SPEC and B-SPEC, licences, the lot). I admit, however, the one thing left for me to do is completing the S.Vettel challenge to gold.

I have a DFGT, that makes the seasonal events more enjoyable. I have no complaints what so ever about the game replay value, it will last me for the rest of my life, and so have all the previous GT games. Seriously.

So, I can't afford (money wise) to extend the game. And my online experience isn't a very good one.

Again, thank you for sharing your opinions. Somehow, it made me look at it with a different perspective.

It is my way.

It was sarcasm suggesting you pay that £40 or whatever and spent money on dlc but also got so much for free. 17 updates Infact.

Transformers war for cybertron has been put longer, yet has 2 DLCs and 0 updates.

I've had my copy since December 2010 when it came with my PS3(actually why I bought the console). I've got massive amounts of time and enjoyment out of it. I've also bought the tracks and the Scion, and still use them to this day. Seeing as though I technically got the game for free. I would say it was well worth it. Knowing what I have now, I would buy the SE in a heartbeat.

What you need to do is join a racing league, a decent one. That will extend your appreciation of this game ten fold. This from personal experience.

I was about to give up on GT, but then got an invite from a GT500 league, then another, then another. Trust me, if you find a decent set of people to race with, I guarantee you won't need to but the DLC. I have only the 1st and second DLC's, I have not bought motegi because I can't justify the money. I know it's only a fiver, but it's my fiver that I'm not willing to part with for a track on a game. There are more than enough tracks already on GT, don't get me wrong I would like more content.

Take the 1st DLC, that was a bundle of goodies for what 8 quid? In the latest one, one track a fiver. Not good value in my opinion. Also this is for a track that they were modelling anyway for GTA. If their were cars and paints in the package then I would gladly hand over another 8 quid, maybe even a tenner.

Truth be told, it's not just PD who are guilty of greed, I have seen an increase in price on all DLC's for all games. Unless costs are getting higher.

I can honestly say for me the game was worth every penny. I have played the game nearly every day since its release and still love it

Yea. No other game has been able to hold my attention so well, that's the sign of your money being well spent.

Another Skyline in GT5? No thanks, I'd rather see the Nissan LMP cars in Le Mans 2012 then ANOTHER GT-R in the game. There's more than I can count, literally.
