Is GT6 pushing PS3's hardware limit?

Well, GT6 goes past what the PS3 can deliver. You can notice it quite well watching allot of replays driving premium cars (i don't know about standards as i try to avoid them), and while racing on some tracks. As well on the temperature and sound of the PS3. All the coolng fans will be at max speed after a short while and as you can read else where, the old ones can't even run GT6 properly.
I think low FPS in a race game is a bad thing, and a proper buzzkill. I can't help it but as soon as i can see the fps become too low it is like someone switches off the immersion switch.
I love the new and fast loading races and menus, but would gladly lose a little of the glamour for 10 more fps.
However, the fact that they manage to run GT6 at the fps it does is nothing short of masterfull.

As for the PS4 and GT7, it just depends on if they will use a new engine or not. Kaz said they will start from scratch for the PS4, so i somehow do expect a new engine and with that updated graphics. The main improvements will probably be seen on the sides of the track with more realistic looking enviroments, real grass, better lighting on all tracks etc since cars en the roadsurface allready looks very good in GT6.
And i hope they will dump allot of the old duplicate cars, and go for a premium car only approach.

Well, no. GT6 is upscaled to full 1080p from 1440x1080, I think.

I don't think it's pushing it to the absolute limit because there's still enough power to do 1080p/60fps.

You know the game runs in 1440x1080P and assume the game is already upscaled to 1080P. Yet you still think there's enough power in the PS3 to do 1080P?

But when I asked you if you mean full 1080P (As in native), you said no?

The problem PD will now face with the PS4 is that expectation will be very high for alot of features as now the issue of little RAM will be non existent. I personally will be expecting ALOT from PD, I feel somewhat let down by the offerings on PS3, two unfinished games at launch in a nutshell, not good enough PD.

Awnsering the question!
NO, not even close to the max of the PS3

if it looks like it maxing out the PS3 thats because it game running on one of the worst engines ever,,, infect the only thing that GT6 is maxing is the HDD thats it.

Well it's certainly enough to do something better than the usual 720p now isn't it?

There's only about 20 or so full native 1080P games on PS3 and about 10 sub native 1080P games.

So Gran Turismo making it into the small majority while running at 60fps is quite an accomplishment if you ask me.

Let's face reality, 1440x1080p while struggling to REACH (let alone 'maintain') 60fps, while dealing with all of its effects visually is pushing this console to its brink.

IN ADDITION, there's also dealing with THREE audio formats; DD5.1, 7.1LPCM AND DTS!!! That doesn't just take up ROM space, but it's pretty much a RAM eater too. Aside from the engine sounds that need fixing, everything else audibly in GT6 is extraordinary, everything from changing pitches in distance to rushing wind is breathtaking, it's just the engines that kill the moment..

There's not really more you can do here with this console other than further optimizations and tweaks, and PD aren't exactly Naughty Dog here, this is the best they can do.

I already want to see what PD is capable of in the PS4. I think we'll be amazed.

Actually the PS3 uses a set of cell processors. I think there are 8 of them and they are pretty fast. The problem is that they are also hard to code for and the GPU is underpowered compared to the processors and a small amount of ram.

If it was actually a Pentium D then it would be easy to code for but slower in execution

PS3 uses 1 Cell processor, made up of 8 Synergistic Processing Elements and one central Power PC element that tells each SPE what to process. 1 SPE is disabled to increase manufacturing yield, of the 7 active SPE's 6 are available for games, the remaining 1 runs the operating system I think? And of course the modest GPU is there as well.
XB 36O CPU-computer processing unit is not as capable as PS3's SPU Synergistic processing unit(Cell-combined spe's and ppc element)
XB 360 GPU is more capable than PS3's GPU. Personally I think that the combined processors of PS3 out perform the combined processors of the good 360.

To my eyes GT6 looks mighty fine.

OT, yes it is, the game runs at 1440x1080p and most of the time 60fps plus it has one of the best graphics in the PS3, almost every other game runs at 720p and 30fps on BOTH PS3 and Xbox 360, while the latter has a built in upscaler to upscale to 1080p. Gran Turismo 6 is a damn technical marvel.

- PD implemented dynamic tesselation on PS3 (premium cars)
- 12 % increase of the resolution compared to GT5, GT6 : 1440x1080p
- Better lighting with HDR system
- Astronomical simulation
- Suppression of pixelated shadows in cockpit view
- Clean smoke and rain
- More animations on the track (spectators take photos, walk, move etc.. No vulgar cardboard as in Forza 5)
- No tearing
- Anti-aliasing more efficient

Right, necessarily improvements will impact something : some flickering shadows, clipping on track and framerate (
I pleasantly surprised by the framerate, I thought it would get worse ! No, it's as GT5)

The Last of Us also has problems : flickering, low-res shadows (worse than Gran Turismo 6), textures problems, lower framerate (30fps to 20 fps), etc.. And we were not huge, it's considered one of the most technically advanced games.

So I don't see why it'll not be the same for PoDi and Gran Turismo 6. Developers' PoDi have done an amazing job, no one could deny that

Panorama seems the worst when going down that twisty downhill portion. With the leaves, dappled sunlight and moving objects the screen just flickers like crazy, the PS3 can't paint the images fast enough.
