Is it just me, or are cars getting uglier?

I thought cars started getting ugly after the Disco Potato. Got better for a while. Got worse when American (Principally California based art students) put their input into American Market exports (i.e. Celica GT). Not looking good after seeing anticipated 2004 designs. This futuristic junk just isn't appealing right now.

Well, that looks like Dodge Viper meets Jaguar XJ220 - there's not really any new elements in that design.

I would think they're about the same - there are some good and bad.

The headlights scream TVR I think.

Also, another bad car from recent times (2001); Oscar Dromos.

I think that looks somewhat decent from the side shot, but the front shot sucks.

Eh, It's not just you. It seems every manufacturer no longer cares about a smooth clean look of a car. Instead they are all adopting that sharp edge/uglier than hell look.

Aerodynamics suck, don't they.

Agreed - it almost seems as if they're trying to jump into the future before the future's arrived.

I agree, starting with the prototype Skyline from GT Concept. :( I really hope Nissan thinks it over cuz its so damn ugly.

I don't think that car looks that bad. Ferrari is just following the Modena/Marannello design but adding in a little futuristic clean look to it. What do you expect? Just about ever concept that shows up now adays look futuristic like that.

But I do agree with you. What some of these companies are making/are going to make now adays are just plain ugly. Way too futuristic and concepty.

The only cars that aren't turning ugly are Mazdas and Subarus. I don't know about Subaru but Mazda isn't going to change thier style in a long time(they are in process of finishing a style change with the 6, the 3, the RX-8, the Premacy, and the 2/Demio).

Caddys are horrible looking. The edges are too sharp and the car looks like there's no rounded part, all flat panels and edges. Then there's Buick with thier round cars.

It seems like now that the car companies are making all of thier models have similar style cues. It works for some(Mazda), but is pretty bad for others(Chevy...truck based styling on thier cars. Ugh!).

:rolleyes:

I think on average cars are lookng better than they did, especially American cars.

Now what could be uglier than that?

one need only look at pics from the tokyo auto shows to have some clue as to our potential future of ugliness

RX8 = ugly.
MPV = pretty damn normal.
Tribute = dated, but good-looking.

The Forrester, Baja, and Outback are god damned ugly too.

Baja = ugly
Outback = normal looking

What are you even talking about?

i have to say that mazda has already changed their design... and practically everything that will be going into there cars will be different... i mean they changed the heads of the sports division right... anyways... its evident in the new looks displayed with mp3 ****s...

the new mazda six isnt that bad... actually i kinda like it...

toyota has lost all sense of what a car should look like...
honda is struggling with the idea... but at least coming out with sensible cars...
nissan/infiniti... well they have some uglies and some great designs... but i may be getting influenced by the fantastic-ness of there cars... like the new maxima or 350z...
bimmer has started to change and i am sure that i will eventually get used to it... kinda sad what they are planning to do to the 3... and what they did to the 7.. and there hyundai-like z4...
merc is just filled with dum arses
same with present day ford
and hell gm in american as well
infact i cant think of an american car mass produced that is not ugly...

but you know what every car will grow on you... unless its fugly then you migt as well take a baja on it and stuff it down your pants...

Their = posessive. "Their cars are cool."
There = location. "It's over there."
"They're" = contraction. "They are."

Typing with reckless stupidity isn't allowed on these forums, and you're quite clearly one of the worst offenders.

The 2005 Mustang is nice. It's a departure from everything else, and we need that. The Ferarri used to start this thread is just the logical outcome of the current trend in car design. You can only go so sleek before it's stupid looking.

It is ugly, but it's insanely practical, functional, and reliable. I actually like it in all its cheekyness.
