xbox? don't make me laugh!
I loved Gran Turismo 2 as a kid and played the hell out of it, maybe literally as my GT disc broke after about 2-3 years of playing. I was never able to get a new disc so I ended up having to stick with Arcade Mode untill I finally picked up Gran Turismo 3.

More recently I've found dirt cheap copies of Gran Turismo 2 (no more than £2 each) in bargain bins at Gamestation stores or charity shops, and wanting to re-live Gran Turismo 2's GT mode I picked up a copy.

Of course, the Arcade disc worked fine (I still have the original Arcade Mode disc from my first copy of GT2 back in the day), but while the GT mode disc worked better than my first copy when it broke (my first disc refused to even pass the Playstation's white BIOS screen), it was still unplayable as it froze as soon as I started any kind of race (licence test, speed test, race, anything). I got the disc professionally cleaned, no difference. I tried it on my PS2 and PS3, no difference.

So, as the copies were dirt cheap still, I picked up another. The same thing happened. Same with the next. By the end I had bought all 4 copies in town, all which had the same problem. The Arcade mode disc works, the GT one dosen't. I now own 5 Arcade Mode discs, all working perfectly, and one GT Mode disc, which worked slightly better than the others, but still effectivley unplayable, and £15 down... :indiff:

I've come to the conclusion the GT Mode disc is very delicate, but is this true? Has anyone else had the same problem with their GT Mode disc?

The problem, I think, is that GT Mode is pretty much the only mode anyone played with any regularity. I think I may have played Arcade Mode maybe half a dozen times on my first copy of GT2, while my Simulation Mode disk is so scratched that it became unplayable and I had to buy a second copy.

The old Playstation was prone to disk spinning problems (I had to replace the spinner part twice on mine over the years), resulting in the games wobbling and scratching along the interior as they spun, or refusing to load any games at all. It's not particularly surprising to find the Simulation Mode disk unusable, but it IS surprisingly to see that in every copy you can find. You must have a lot of gearheads in your area, huh?

I've been through 3 or 4 Sim Mode discs for that game, now I finally have a good copy again. And I'm going to play the hell out of it again. Once I get home there goes 8 hours of my day.

Same situation i had to deal with. A year before I got GT4, my Sim disc wouldn't work but my Arcade disc did. I almost cried. I ended up getting a brand new GT2 from Amazon for $25, and waited the entire time so patiently for it to arrive. I've never wanted anything more in my life at that time. But, now my discs are going bad again, and I might need to do this again.

There you go.

Ultraboy It sounds like your "dirt cheap" copies are dirt-cheap for a reason...I would try to find a new(er) copy if possible.

I guess I'm lucky. I still have the same GT2 sim disc as I did 8 years ago, and it still works fine. I bought GT2 new, though.

Sorry for the late reply.

The reason why "dirt cheap" copies are the only ones I've bought is because that's all there is in the shops! All PS1 games sell for no more than £2 here because to most people that's what they're worth.
Hell, if I found Final Fantasy 7 complete that probably wouldn't be much more than £5 at most...

But yeah, my first copy of GT2 was a new copy as I got it for christmas the year it was released, but it was probably my fault for never looking after the game cases well as a kid that it still broke (I think it even had rather deep scratches on the front on the disc...)

Damnit man, if you're serious, pick up a copy online! There are definitely still millions of working copies of the GT2 sim disc out there for you to have!

Heh. Read my previous post in the thread. That was back when I was almost failing math. Had to put GT2 to the side for a while. Anyway jeffgoddin's right, you'll have to look online. If your worried about your credit card security online, don't. Pick up a prepaid credit card and load it with like 20 dollars. Since it's prepaid its not linked to a bank account and you can't get your account drained.

Sorry for the bump... again. Thought it was better than a new thread.

I found another copy of GT2 yesterday, for £1. It was the only non-Platinum (PAL version of Greatest Hits) copy I've ever found, and it worked. So, this problem is solved.

My new conclusion seems that every GT2 NON-Platinum GT-mode disc is fragile.

Also, a question: There's a little slip in the game box that says if I rub the front of the GT Mode disc it gives me a "pit stop smell". I haven't tried it cause it sounds like a joke, and by now it's probably run out, anyway. Is there any reason they did that?

Same here. I remember my dad getting in when it was brand-new that Christmas - the best thing he ever did was share it with me as a kid! :sly: We both - plus my mother - played the game so intensely over the course of the following years and it's still in great shape - same with the PS1 - never had to buy a replacement unit of either, luckily!

And even 11 years later, it still sees some use every so often. :)

Same thing here...although I think it was more a part of my ps1 starting to fail on reading Disks...My ps3 and ps2 can read the Simulation Mode a lot better...Arcade on the other hand not so mucn rofl.

But that is probably because I put equal miles on both...(Once I got everything I possibly ever wanted in GT2 simulation...after that all I had was arcade) (Also I cheated because my friend had a gameshark disk...so I erased my original file so I can get 9999999999999999999999999999999999 credits =P)
