Is it possible to get the same steering response as in GT5?

Hi guys,

I bought Shift 2 for my PS3 yesterday without reading any reviews (stupid), after 4h of tweaking and testing I can't get the steering to work properly with my Fanatec GT3RS v2, either it lags or it over compensate and can go straight. All in all, I've got zero feeling in the steering no matter what.
The span is terrible to unplayable, I never got it where I could drive ok.

Is it possible to set it up as good as GT5?
I mean, in GT5 the car does exactly what I want, the steering is locked in as you'll expect from a simulator.

Any input would be great.

Search on YouTube for the channel "simracingtonight" and look at their Shift 2 review, they played with the settings and tell which are the best.

But even after that don't expect a "real" feeling. You're still playing an Arcade game (no matter what fanboys tell you).

Just google search for your wheel and shift2, my steering response is spot on (although i use the dfgt) unlike GT5 the settings are very sensitive so just do small tweaks till you get it how you want it. And update the game if you havent already.

It downloaded 1.02 when I installed it yesterday, don't know if that's the most current version?

I did try insidesimracings settings but they were no good, I might have to test them again and verify everything was setup correctly.

Best would be if someone here could share their working settings.

^ Unfortunately the steering lag can't be tweaked away. The best thing you can do to approximate realistic steering is to set steering sensitivity = 50%, speed sensitivity = 0% and steering deadzone = 0% - then play the game until you have adapted to the lag.

I don't think you can do anything in GT5 to improve your steering. But Shift 2 has large amount of settings. You won't be able to set exactly the same settings but finding them requires a MUCH more play time then ONE DAY !!!! .

For PS3 version: no, because of what people above me already mentioned (lag can't be tuned out, and don't count on a patch). Note that regardless of lag, some of the car setups are really broken and will remain crap, whatever you do with it.

The PS3 version really got shafted as far as I'm concerned, PC version has no issues with lag or weird steering responses. It does have the same weird car setups, but there are mods that fix that. I haven't touched the PS3 version since I got it for PC.

Main thing to remember is that this is an arcade racer primarily and it will never be exactly like GT5.

With my DFGT I set the dead zone to 1% sensitivity to 80% and rotation to 450 degrees and it works pretty well for me.'

If there is any steering lag I don't notice it and have easily been able to win most events so far.

The steering in GT5 is locked...which is not what you expect from a simulator. Sorry but not all race cars have 900 degrees of rotation. You cannot change the steering lock in GT5.

I have used a DFGT and Fanatec GT2 with S2 on PS3. With the GT3 I suggest setting the Sens. to OFF, Deadzone 0, on the wheel. In game setting steering lock between 360-540, whatever you are comfortable with.

Then remember this game is big on tuning the car. You HAVE to learn how to tune the cars in order to get them to "feel" good for you. It is much more of a sim than people give it credit for. Tire pressure, to springs, and bumps make a big difference. Also, tune EACH cars steering lock to what you like. You will have a solid FF feel after that.

And the GT5 fanboys still cant seem to drive in S2. Tire pressure, tuning options, and actual damage make it much more of a sim than GT5. Thats my opinion just like yours.

Thank god it isnt like GT5, you say it like its a bad thing:sly:

The deadzone at 1% is hardly noticeable. One you tune the cars right, yeah the lag goes away.

I pretty much agree Vaxxtx ^

The best thing to do with this game is simply learn to drive it. Unlike GT & much more like in real life it takes practice as well as playing with the settings to develop your skill.

Would you expect to jump in a real race car and be competitive within an hour or so?

If you just quit after a few hours of play you will miss out on some of the best racing experiences you can find on the console.

I am at level 17 (whatever that means :sly:) but have only done 12% of career because I mostly do quick races, lots & lots of them :)

Awww, c'mon now, be nice, don't feed the trolls and go into the 'game x vs game y' war. ;) Both GT5 and Shift 2 are sims, but each focuses on different aspects of driving/racing. Whether they are good or bad at being sims, now that can be debated. However, if you claim either is an arcade game, that's not an opinion; that's simply a blatant lie, and very easy to disprove too. But it's up to the person making the claim to prove it, not to others to dismiss it.

In the end I think that GT5 and S2U are more similar than most people want to admit: they both excel tremendously in certain areas, yet they fail miserably in others, there is hardly an in-between.

It help a whole lot to crank up "caster" under alignment tuning. Apparently the default values are way to low... Try something in the range 25-29 and see if that helps

Everything about Shift feels a lot more realistic to me than GT5. I like both games equally. They are both games. Not simulators. Games. The simulator stuff is just effective marketing.

After spending 6h tonight things are better with a few cars, but the Lotus Exige S in the first race round Suzuka is undrivable, it wanders all over the road and the steering wheel lags my Fanatec wheel with ~ 1/10 sec.

Cars I own I can tune to be a little bit better, but cars I "borrow" for the race can't be tuned, right?

What difference does it make if I set the in-game steering lock to 400 and the wheel to OFF, 450 or 900?

Is there any setting that will affect how responsive the steering is?

Not sure about wheels - I use a DS3, but you are correct, you can't tune the cars that you don't own.

The Lotus is a bit of a pig. It is tricky to drive but with practice you can get it right. The key is to remember that it is a five lap race, so you have plenty of time to catch the front-runners. This is one of those races where you don't have to be leading from the very first lap.

The Exige is one of those cars that have a horrible default setup. Worst thing is that in this particular race, you can't change the setup. :( The thing handles like a boat, even more so than some of the classic muscle cars.

So nothing todo then, just try and win as it is?

When will the cars get better?
Are there any cars that are really good in this game?

Nothing you can do but bit the bullet I'm afraid.

There are many cars that are excellent in this game, which class do you require specifically?

Shame about the Exige (and Elise), as in real life they are a fantastic handling car, and would leave most others in their class for dead in the right hands. :irked:

I hear ya on this one. I beat this race through a combo of violence and dumb luck. Actually maybe I came in 2nd or 3rd I forget, but I won the car either way.

The setup on the Exige (and some other cars in this game) is completely undriveably horrid. I've gotten to the point that I just don't use those cars, and any events that require you to use them I just skip over.

The thing that helped us the most was to set it to novice,(hold on, read it all), then turn off ALL assists EXCEPT steering. Leave steering assist on and you will have better luck. You will feel the assists working but it will make most cars driveable.

I play with all assists off on hard/elite and although a bit of floatiness is felt changing direction its not as bad as some real life cars I've driven (namely mini-vans :D)

PS: Its hard as hell to beat the 1:31 without my beloved hood cam though :grumpy:

In my experience, no. I already gave up on this game and sold it. I'm now having a lot f funnwith F1 2011.
