Is it Working?

Hey Guys

Ive recently bought myself a DFGT wheel after playing with the controller since GT1. Im slowly getting the hang of it via GT5P, but im curious to know how would i know if its not functioning correctly?.

This is the first time ive played with a wheel, and with force feedback. So can someone describe to me how it should feel with the FFB settings?. To me it seems as though its harder to turn when its higher, though maybe thats down to not having the power steering turned on?. Should that be on?.

Just a slight bump or anything and it pretty much ends up with me crashing out, and the wheel going round and round until it stops. Is this normal behaviour?. Dont get me wrong i can do full laps and all that. Its just that something feels very weird and the wheel feels as though its clicking (slightly) as i turn it (slow turn that is)

Like i said im new to this wheel, as in ive never used one before, so i want to know if this is working fine and i can then keep practicing until GT5 comes out. Thanks for any help or advice anyone offers. Hey just a little over a week to go now :)

i have the same wheel and had the same problem. turn down your force feedback. i turned mine off completely because im better with out it. but if you want it on just keep it very low

You can set the force feedback to your prefferrence. Your not suppose to let the wheel go and just let it take over control of the car. Youre suppose to take control of it by point it the direction you want to correct the over or understeer. Thats the normal reaction of the wheel when the car start pushing or when the rearend starts to stepout. So your reaction should be let off the gas when pushing and countersteer when the back end starts to come out. Practice makes perfect give it some time and you will get use to the weird force feedback. Then it woun't feel weird anymore.

Turning it off is like voiding all the hard work PD put into the physics modelling. That is were the sim is giving you input on what the car is doing at that very split second. I know some people that do turn the FF off and also drive better so they just react to the graphic image to see what the car is doing. But its like having a full simulator with the hydrolics for simulating the g-force and they choose to turn it off and just have the car stationary. Too each his own I suppose.

It's normal when first trying out a FFB wheel. Grip it like a manly man, get accustomed to turning it 90° ~ 180° at most, remind yourself that it will take considerable effort to break it, and keep practicing. The learning-curve can seem steep at first, but you'll quickly find that you'd have it no other way as you ramp up the FFB strength.

Good luck!

I would suggest setting the FFB at about 3 for starters and after you get the feel for it crank it up a bit more. 3 is high enough to give you some resistance and a good kick when you hit something while not so much that it will tear out of your hands. The draw back is that when you exit a tight corner a setting of 3 is not high enough to quickly recenter and will require you to turn the wheel back to center when exiting a sharp corner at speed. If you set it higher you can let the wheel slide in your hands and go back to center.

It takes a while to get used to it but once you get the feel then you have it and will be glad you did. I found that driving high powered RWD cars with no traction or stability on pro physics helped me a great deal. Don't get me wrong I was spinning out right and left at first but after a bit of practice doing that I am now able to control the car in almost any situtation.

FFB shouldn't be set high. If the wheel is shaking all over when you hit bumps, that's too high. The cars with power steering shouldn't take much effort at all to steer.

Before the mods decide to shut this down or lock it. May I suggest drifting? Racing around roads, powersliding, doing donuts. pretty much anything you can do ina car will help you get used to it. So try not to limit yourself to jut driving around. I would personally suggest using about a level 2 or 3 or perhaps starting at 1 go for a drive and then adjust and repeat until you get used to it and start to find your own groove. I would also suggest keeping the power steering on until you get somewhat used to how the wheel acts and behaves. Don't beat the crap out of it, but don't be afraid to manhandle it either. It can take it.

If he's just getting used to a wheel, he won't be able to drift with it. Spinning is all he will do. Practice is key, that's it. Drifting isn't all that easy to get used to with a wheel, especially if you just got the wheel.

I had the same problem when I bought a DFGT 12 months ago. FFB would even rotate the coffee table the wheel was mounted on!!

Have settled on a FFB setting of 1 - seems to give the best (for me) balance off feedback and control

You should be posting this here. It has no relevance to GT5.

I wasnt sure where to post this............sorry :dunce:

I guess its just a greater learning curve than i thought it would be. What i dont understand is that im not sure if i can tell what the car is doing whilst driving. Yeah i can tell when i go to fast round a corner because i wipe out. But as for feeling the road underneath me.........its kinda hard for me. IRL when i turn my steering wheel left on a straight it goes to to the left until i straighten it. In GT5P however when i turn it left it always seems to want to straighten on its own. Is this normal??.

Thanks for the advice. Very much appreciated, and it makes sense. 👍

Edit: i should add that the FFB is set to 10 and assists are off.

Yes, in a real car when turning at speed the normal reaction of the car is still to keep going straight with the tires wanting to to point straight so you are fighting the force of the tires once it starts loosing traction from pushing then you will feel the steering wheel force feedback lighten. When you get the opposite force feedback turn the other way that means the car has started to turn in and the backend is now coming out so yes the wheel again is starting to straighten out but the opposite way.

I think i may have to return it and get a new one.

I was playing last night and whilst turning it feels like something is grabbing inside the wheel, and making it seem very clunky whilst turning. It seems fine after its released, until it happens again. Thats the best way i can describe whats happening.

Like i said in my first post this is my very first wheel, so im just guessing it needs to be replaced. Maybe someone can tell me if this is normal behaviour for this wheel? The wheel is the DFGT incase you didnt know.

Thanks
