Is this a worthwhile purchase?

Is there really much difference in the versions, say for example between the MSI version and the Zotac AMP extreme edition. From what I can see the AMP version has slightly higher base clock so I'm guessing it's overclocked compared to other versions?

I am not an expert on such but advise you should seek reviews of the AMP Extreme Edition 980Ti. It was I believe one of the fastest cards and a good deal so over others. Not sure about a 1080Ti model/review being available yet and like the 1070 edition they hadnt released the full specs yet.

The main factor seems to be not only selling with clocks on the GPU/RAM higher than other models but also better cooling. With the improved cooling the throttling is also avoided more I believe.

So I'm about ready to put together the system, just one question about Windows 10. How big is the version you downloaded and put onto the USB stick, I'm guessing a few gigabytes right?

Yes cant remember for sure the size but is a very simple process.
With most new motherboards it should just auto boot from the USB, certainly on mine I didnt even need to set the USB as primary device.

GFX wise seems ebuyer is cheapest at present on the 1070 Amp Extreme @ £409 if you haven't pulled the plug yet.
Im going for a AIB 480 in a few weeks hoping they come in under £280

Got an update on your specs?

I5 6600k 3.5 ghz
Cryorig H5 Cooler
Z170-A
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB
Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB SSD
WD SATA III 1 TB HD
EVGA 600W PSU
MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X
Corsair 300r Case

That's it for now if I remember correctly.

All looks good, I would however compare how that 1070 matches others in reviews and also not just performance but warranty it that matters to you.

Will check out the card though and thanks for keep coming back, hope you share pics of the system when you get it.
So many good PC games and more coming soon

Sorry Chris was busy at the time of above reply but thought the video might of been a help to you.
Just knew he covered both those card in his review and focuses on all factors not just framerates in his reviews.

Most expensive component for your system so always good to make your choice from gathering what comparisons you can, your own preference and prices etc.

You look to have a great system for gaming and now itching to get it built.
Wish you well.

Here is another for the MSI from Tiny Tom Logan

Yeah thanks for all the advice along the way. I chose the MSI Gaming X because the core clock looked pretty much as much as I was ever going to need with decent cooling. I will definitely post some pictures once the things finally built, must say the cooler is larger than expected and is going to be a task to install, but guess that's part of the fun of custom building :)

Okay look forward to seeing it, the MSI is a good card for sure.
What games you looking forward to play or upcoming releases?

Well I did get a free copy of DOOM with the Asus motherboard so I'm looking forward to trying that out. Battlefield 1 is just around the corner too, so that should be good. I'm actually hoping to try out a few games at 1440p, if I can do that I'll let you know how it goes.

Just waiting on the ssd so I can install windows, quick question about the cables. Is it normal to have to bend the cables so much in order to fit them into the case. I'm finding I have to really bend the cables that go round back into the HDD and the pcie cables for the GPU in order to close the case.
