Is this game worth buying?

GT:M has tons of graphical corruption. Play in cockpit view, for example, and you regularly see large swaths of trackside disappear before you actually get by it.

Tell me about it. At the Test Course, if you drive too close to the inner edge of the 2nd corner (the one with grass on the inside), "triangular" sections of the track on your lower left will disappear, even in bumper view. If you drive in cockpit view the same thing will happen on the backstraight, only this time it's on the lower right.

Is this game worth buying? I always thought it was when it was still full-priced, but with the 50% off thing for many of the PSP games on PSN right now it's a downright bargain at 18 euro!

If I want to see what the PSP is capable of with respect to SFX and graphics I will play God of War.
If I want to play a car racing game that closely resembles what those cars would behave like in the real-world I play GT-PSP.
If people like a mix of driving and SFX without too much concern for realism then NFS, Sega Rally, Ridge Racer, Outrun, and Juiced will probably be more enjoyable for them.

Someone of my own heart. 👍

Would I buy a PSP just for GTPSP ? No. But otherwise you should get both. The PSP is a great little gaming device. Sure it has its problems if you have big fingers like myself, but I have had endless hours of fun while travelling or having to sit silently in the lounge while the wife watches a soap and I cannot get on the PS3.

It is hard to add to the previous comments, I bought GTPSP fairly recently and I am having a lot of fun, and there are a lot of other bargain games around.

- I have a PSP 2000 (it uses a UMD) so check the specs before deciding; screen & memory etc
- as previously stated, get some decent headphones
- if you are getting a new PSP, there are lots of other games worth getting as well such as GoD of War, Ridge Racer, Everybodys Golf, the Ratchet & Clank series... I could go on.. ie the PSP will be a good purchase irrespective of GTPSP.

Just a minor point, because I'm still getting screens together, but:

GT:M has tons of graphical corruption. Play in cockpit view, for example, and you regularly see large swaths of trackside disappear before you actually get by it.

Yes GT defiantly does, its annoying watching the ZR1 at the ring with its headlights flickering. Or the track flickering in and out from the in-car-view etc, but its pale in comparison to Juiced.

In Juiced it's way worse and watching replays is horrible. I like doing replay vids but with juiced2 its pointless, its too much. This type of stuff happens in pretty much most games, its too bad in Juiced it happens more then it does in most. The cars in GT are more solid where Juiced they seem too unstable graphically.

Sorry, I'd just keep it simple :

"Is this game worth buying?" => YES !

It is one of the "you-must-have-game" ! I know people who have only bought a psp -collector please, not me ;)- to play this game and didn't buy any other games !!!

According to me here is the "you-must-have-games" list (little bit off-topic here, sorry, and sorry for not writting the complete names...) :

- Gran Turismo
- Wipeout (Pure/Pulse)
(- NFS (fun))
(- MotorStorm (fun))
- Final Fantasy
- God of War
- Prince of Persia
- Tomb Raider
- Jak and Daxter
- Metal Gear Solid
- Medal of honor
- SOCOM
- GTAs
- Tekken
- Street Fighter (well it's my childhood !!!)
- SoulCalibur (even if I am a little disappointed by this opus)
- FIFA 10 (not a big fan of sports games though, might have NBA, Hockey to add)
- Everybody's Golf (fun)
- Tiger Wood

That would be my list, these are the games you'll spend time with... but since I have GT, didn't buy most of them or didn't play them... SEE : it's worth buying it !!!

I once had a PS2 but it died and I bought a PS3 (60GB) that could play PS2 games. Later that died too. So Sony gave me another PS3 (again 60GB) with PS2-compatibility. That died. But now Sony gave me a 40GB PS3 that can not play PS2 games.

I have the GT4 Disc but I can't play it and I haven't played it for 3 years. I don't really care about the GT mode as I could never beat it(may because I was just 12). But I enjoyed the split-screen mode and the HUGE collection of cars with different characteristics.

So my question is, should I buy a whole new(I'd buy a second-hand one cheap, but there aren't any for sale in my region) PS2 slim? Or should I buy GT:PSP? It would be definitely cheaper and have more cars and It'd have the blacked-out-interior view, which I think is pretty awesome and will greatly improve the sense of speed in slower cars.

So what do you guys recommend buy a whole PS2 for GT4 or GT:PSP?(which will apparently satisfy my Gran Turismo needs.)

thats a hard decision and counts on a few things. do you travel a lot or on the john a lot? lol are you planning to get gt5? by splitscreen, do you mean playing with a friend right beside you? do any of your friends have a psp and have or are possibly willing to get gtpsp? if all of those are no, iwould go with the ps2 lol gtpsp has enough cars imo to fulfill your needs and i would trade in your gt4 in order to get gtpsp. hope that helped :)

I'm not considering GT:PSP for portable reasons. It seems like a cheap alternative to buying a new PS2 for GT4. And not to forget a few added benefits like more super-cars,interior view and the ability to transfer cars into GT5.

As for planing to get GT5: I have long since come to the conclusion that I'll be dead by the time GT5 is released :grumpy:. I don't mind sacrificing multiplayer as I usually play GT5:P split-screen these days. Everyone I know who has a PSP is not defiantly not interested in buying GT:PSP.

Now that I think of it, buying a whole(even though the console is very cheap) console just for one out-dated game(even thought the game in question is one of the greatest) is not justified. I'll just get the PSP version. Two questions:

  1. Does GT:PSP run on the GT5:P physics engine or GT4s?
  2. Does GT:PSP retain the gran turismo 'feel' of GT4?

It seems to be an improved GT:5p engine, as traction loss is much much more realistic than GT4's

And by the GT 'feel' if you mean the countless hours grinding working through the campaign, then no, it does not.

1.Just to clear up a bit of this stuff about graphics, In motion it looks great but there are a few hitches, alot and I mean ALOT of texture seaming, I'm not sure how they managed to not fix it up even if its a Psp lose 5-10fps who will notice but these seams are ugly. From a graphics point of view its far from Gran turismo 4, Infact GT3 looks much better, id put this game in between GT2 and GT3. I dont think its the best looking game on the system though, I think Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep looks a mile better with more action on screen 100's of enemies at one point, and I must say Cambridge Studio's done a better job putting LBP onto the PSP it just looks and feels more like the original.

Im not saying its bad its a great game, but it does have its technical flaws.

2. Physics wise I just stick to standard, professional feel like they really are not meant for PSP controls and I'd rather enjoy this game on the go than sit in a train swearing and throwing things while people stare at me. The Standard Physics are GT4 alike, while the Professional are GT5 alike but just feel tacked on.

3.Controls are good, but once again on standard, professional its like hell with some of the cars especially the ultra powerful Lemans cars from the 80's makes it feel more like some type of mass button tapping game than a nice smooth racing game, controls are good and I dont mind the D-Pad but it sucks that the PSP does not have pressure sensitive buttons, come on Sony what were you thinking ! , it was 2004 not 1985.

4. Car selection is great sure there are repeats of some cars actually alot :P the entire renault section is repeated with different names sigh,....., but its still good only annoying part is waiting for your car to show up, or see it show up then sneak away because you were 500 short :@.

5.No not really, but it depends, if you use the bland cockpit view yes, you can barely see the race track and what you can see the lap counter etc goes into it, so aslong as you dont drive with that view its all fine.

I think GT is a remarkable achievement on the PSP and an essential purchase for all. It looks great, sounds great, plays well and has enormous diversity of cars and tracks. I have had several issues with it, some resolved, some not:

1) Views
I might well be in the majority here but I have always played my racing games from the out of car view. I found this impossible in GT, there is such a view available but with the small screen it's impossible to judge technical corners as your view is often blocked by the car. Plus there is something going on with the pan of the camera too which makes the cars feel jelly like. The next best view for me is the roofcam one and I have adapted to this well and enjoy it now.

2) Controls
The joystick is neither use nor ornament so it's back to the buttons for the first time in around a decade. This is not the fault of GT though, it does the best it can with the hardware it has to build on and you pick up the buttons pretty quickly again anyway so this has not been much of an issue.

3) Dealership Cycle
I'm not a fan of this and not just because it is so different from how this sort of thing has been done before. I don't think that it works for me on the PSP because you need to exit races and keep coming back to the front end to move days forward. Now I have the UMD version and loading is really slow on it, the structure of the dealerships is making me exit stuff and hammer loading all the time just for the sake of advancing itself if I want to get to a certain manufacturer.

4) Financial Reward
Probably my biggest unresolved bugbear with the game is the financial reward for races and the accumulation of cash to buy cars.

Now there are over 800 cars in this game and if you discount duplicates and the likes, there must still be at least 300-400 potentially desirable cars to own. The problem is they all cost 750,000 - 4m credits which is a lot when the race rewards are pretty meagre. You find yourself spending 5 incredibly boring minutes at a time doing 2 laps of the test course to raise 150,000 credits. Multiply that by 7 to earn the money to buy a Group B rally car for example and you spend 35 minutes doing essentially nothing fun just to pay for one of the maybe 400 cars you might want to try out.

I like to test out cars I get by seeing how quickly I can lap the Nurburgring as I am sure many of you do, I cannot see why there is no credits for miles driven in Time Trial at the very least. And as someone said before, there are no free cars, no gimmes., nothing at all.

You should save the game to a card, makes loading a lot faster.

And as someone said before, there are no free cars, no gimmes., nothing at all.

Except for the 1st car that is given to you, and you can download a lot of the special color cars for free off PSN. But you are correct, grinding for credits can suck.
