Is this the norm?

Hey everyone,

I’m a newbie both here (been lurking for awhile) and to online racing. I’ve played plenty of single player and time trials in the past.

So I have like 15 Online races under my belt with a D DR and A-S SR.

I constantly get matched with players that are A and S DR rank and just now I got matched with a player that is ranked in the top 5 fastest for the event.

What gives? I mean, I feel like I stand zero chance. Less than 15 races and I’m matched with some dude that is best in the world!?

Is the player base this shallow for a Friday night?

Really disheartening. I don’t expect to go in and win win win but come on. Feels pretty hopeless and beginning to become unfun. Not even mentioning the crazy penalty system...

Another thing. A game endorsed by the FIA allows CONES and BARRIERS to fly around and stay in the middle of the track for drivers to hit on the next lap? Really?

Not sure what region you are playing in, but in the Americas a lot of the top drivers recently started new accounts. Until those new accounts accumulate DR points, they'll be matched with much slower drivers.

If you're interested in the trophies, it might be a good idea to go after the 15 clean races in a row. It's really hard to get 15 clean races in a row when you're trying to win, so makes sense to get it out of the way before you build DR points.

except even then with new accounts they would be D/S as well, OP is saying he is being matched with A/S and B/S when he is D/S. (the setting up of new accounts to go back to D ranking is just rude really, are those guys that desperate to feel like a winner again??)

my understanding is that matching is done by SR first, so if you are S, you'll first get matched on DR S and anyone else at the same time who wants to race, after that it's a lottery but DR I'm sure is taken into account just not as much as SR.... I'm B/S and since getting up to about 25K B points I'm constantly racing A+ and A DR ranked guys and I have no chance against them, however I am getting better by racing them and my DR is still improving.

No. They made new accounts since they probably either got invited to new teams or didn't leave GT6 altogether until the preseason

For the OP, sadly it's the norm :( I'm an A+ player and I almost always see a C or D-ranked player in matchmaking, no matter what region. Maybe in prime time when there's the most people playing the lowest person would be a B rank, but even that's few and far in between :nervous:

What region do you mostly play in?

I'm Dr A and I mostly see A+, A, and B. If I'm slightly fast, I only see A+ and A (and my butt gets kicked)

The only time I see Dr C or Dr D is if I play early in the morning or if my Sr pts are below 89.

I'm not sure I agree. Like who? :odd:

Asia and sometimes EU. I don't play US much anymore but the last time I played there it was the same case

I wish that was the case for me because I'm falling again...:(

If you hover between A and S SR you're likely getting matched in the 80-89 SR range often which has very few players at any one time, you usually find at least 1-2 A+ DR guys recovering SR in those lobbies.

When I did a few races on a US account I started getting put into top split Daily Races at low B. There's 200+ Daily Races a day which spreads the player base out a lot. FIA gets you matched with similarly ranked players because you can only do 2 out of 10 races across the 2 Championships twice a week, which concentrates the player base much more effectively.

Matchmaking looks at SR first, not just the letter, in smaller ranges as well. SR goes from 0 to 99.

There are very few A+ drivers (0.12%) and not a lot of A (0.61%)
Most of them tend to be in SR.S (97% of A+, 76% of A)

The high SR rooms first get filled with the available A+/S and A/S drivers, then padded with lower ranked high SR drivers.
For SR.A you'll likely see DR.A drivers on pole trying to get back to SR.S
The higher your SR, the tougher the competition.

Matchmaking works best at SR.B if you're below DR.A, and best at SR.A if you're below DR.A+. Best as in fair competition.

Oh wow. Okay.

That’s some pretty crappy match making :/

I don’t know, I played maybe 4 or 5 races last night starting from about 2330-0200ish Eastern Time (eastern USA.)

Every lobby was about the same rating wise. Quite a few A and B ratings.

Last game (that prompted this question) I noticed at the grid screen an A+ driver with an excellent qualifying time. I was about five seconds (P11) off his pace in qualifying.

I thought “damn, that’s a crazy time.” Looked it up in the rankings after the match and sure enough he was 4th highest for for day.

That’s miserable. May as well pull off the side of the track almost. :(

Interesting. Thank you. After a wreckfest in my last game of the night I’m down to A SR.

Maybe things will even out soon. I hope. I dig the game.

Agreed, I’ve almost completely stopped playing Sport Mode, I think the last time I raced was 3 weeks ago even though I check what races are running daily.

PD should really give you class based wins. Like if you’re a B driver and you finish 4th but you’re the top B driver, that should count as a win. If they did that, I’d play Sport Mode much more!

I dont believe you.

Hey it’s just like real racing. There’s always gonna be someone faster than you.

Whether it’s sheer talent and ability or they have a lot more money than you.

I’m no prodigy and I sure as hell don’t have that much skill or money.

Racing is a sport that is folly to expect to win constantly. If you think that, someone will put you in your place fast in the real world and online.

The upside to GT Sport is you can practice as much as you want to get better. No additional money required.

Ignore finishing positions, getting to a level where you have clean racing and are competitive is the goal.

1) I would love to be in your position. Usually I began between 1st and 5th position, and because of that, at some point, I'm hit from behind and it became difficult to come back and win DR points. Would love to start from the back with faster guys in front of me sometimes.

2) Instead of accusing the matchmaking algorithm, ask you this simple question : Are there so many people with a great SR rank but an "average" DR rank ?

Enjoy the lower ranks for now as for A and A+ it's no fun either to be matched with DR.B to DR.D. The way the DR system works is that it's very hard to gain points when matched with much lower ranked players, yet you can easily lose 2K DR if someone takes you out or you simply get disconnected during the race.

Another problem is that the penalty system changes drastically from DR.B to DR.A. Up to DR.B you can get away with quite a bit of contact in corners. In DR.A that always results in a time penalty. With mixed classes driving together. DR.B can bump into DR.A and the DR.A driver ends up with the penalty.

So although it might seem unfair to be matched with much faster players, the reverse is no picnic either. From SR.B up I actually find most people try to drive clean with the biggest difference the race is nearly always cleaner at the front than the back.

As for 2, SR.S is made up of
A+/S 1.9%
A/S 7.4%
B/S 35%
C/S 23%
D/S 38%
E/S 0.3%

Rooms with only A+/S and A/S are pretty rare. If you're D/S and better at qualifying than most other D/S drivers, you get the honor of racing with the fast guys. Although sometimes it fills up A/S rooms with D/S drivers that did not qualify at all :/

Huh, finish 4th because your a B rated driver and score a win???
Yeah, um no...this isn’t “everyone gets a trophy”. Suck it up, get out there and improve your skills and race. I don’t expect to win every time I enter a race. What I hope to do is finish better than where I started and work on my race craft.

Ditto with Nick. By doing that you're just trying to make the incentive to win (or finish higher than you started) disappear in your desire for instant gratification

THe main point of racing is to improve your race craft, winning feels good but just improving my rank feels even better, I’m chasing A+ dr and slowly getting there, my lap times are always improving. When I started playing GT Sport at release I was 3+ seconds off the leaderboard times, now On half the tracks I can get within a second If I put about 15 laps in qualifying. I also got really comfortable racing in traffic and off the main racing line when in traffic.
To the OP, just keep doing daily races once you get to dr b the racing will be closer and you’ll be good enough to race closer to other cars. I feel like if they put a full grid of dr D racers it would be too hard to stay clean because everyone would probably have different braking points on all the turns, higher dr and most people have similar and more consistent breaking points. As long as you have 2-4 other people to get a close race for yourself that should be good enough to get better at your rank!

Like Sven Jurgens said: your DR will go up much quicker if you get positioned next to quicker drivers. So be happy about that. The winning will come eventually dont worry.

Getting 10% wins of all your races is very good. So 20 wins for someone with 200 races is pretty good actually. That is also the reason why the winning bonus is set to 20. PD did not think everybody would be winning races like crazy. So set your mind to these points !

Also the 15 consecutive bonus is true. But I made 11 consecutive bonus this week driving top 3 which gives so much more personal reward than driving at the back intentionally.

I never said everyone gets a trophy nor did I imply it. I also never said I expect to win every time I enter a race either.

Talk about improving, maybe try reading more carefully because it seems like you’re(not your) responding to a different post altogether.

Let's switch matchmaking algorithms  my grind to 60k has been torturous since I only gain 100 DR per race, and not being the most consistent driver doesn't exactly help :(
This is what I'm talking about man. All As and A+s. This is usually all I see, and if I'm not at Lagos, I'm outclassed by a lot...

Recognized your name from a race I just had with ya, was nice to see another gtp member

Interesting stats ! Where did get those ? Do you have stats only for the SR division (no latter the DR).

You're A/S, so I don't see the problem ??

The pace gap just accross A rank is already around a second or so. That's already hard enough on itself, so adding an A+ (the best players that regularly top the leaderboards, furthermore) to the equation will mever really bode well for low A people
