Japanese whaling and racism

The whaling debate has been going on in Japan for a long time. Every year when the fleet sets out there are protests and news coverage. The Japanese government implies that the whaling is for research, but I can't see how you would need to catch 1000 whale in order to do research effectively.

Shinzo Abe, I believe, before he became prime minister, stated (I am paraphrasing),"If only one Japanese citizen wants to eat whale meat, then we will catch them."

and whale meat isn't even very popular here.

The research is "Can we catch 1,000 whales this season?".

The magic number in science is 200 - you need a population of a minimum of 200 in order for your results to be valid.

Nevertheless, I'm at a loss to understand the issue. Some people eat whale. We care... why?

RE: Steak... I don't know... a well-prepared Lamb dish tastes just about as good to me...

Ah, forgot about lamb. Yes, lamb is probably the closest I've come to finding something that's as good as steak. But lamb seems to be easier to prepare badly.

Whale is fine during Lent. As is beaver, bizarrely.

We're still talking about food right?

Catholics class beavers and capybaras as fish, because they're scaly and live in water.

Let me guess: They didn't include the platypus because they didn't know about it, right?

I want to support the whales. I really do. But the trouble is, I can't find a good enough reason to support that stance. Well, there is one. It's just a feeling that what we are doing is wrong. These mammals, through the miracle of evolution, have found a way to return to the sea and prosper in it. They shouldn't be brought to extinction by another mammal that can only do the same through "artificial" means.

But that's stupid reasoning, because marine reptiles have been successful in the water for far longer than dolphins and whales have. Why aren't there any outcries for preserving salt water crocodiles? Are sea turtles becoming extinct? I can't remember. Are sea snakes endangered?

Obviously which species suck and which are beautiful are subject to individual opinion. I just find it funny how society in general thinks it's fine to kill something for food until they start becoming endangered, then have the complete backflip of 'We must save these beautiful creatures!'.
Apparently you haven't met PETA. They think we shouldn't kill any animal for any food.

Trust me if it were just about population numbers we would be eating cats and dogs regularly, especially as house cats are one of eth deadliest predators in the wild, so reducing their population can only be good for nature.

For some reason, I am not really surprised. Probably because nearly all the rules my wifes asks me to follow with her, but "don't have to" (yeah, right), are just as confusing.

Because I don't have any on my plate yet.

Well, we naturall;y involved intelligence and opposable thumbs, so our ability to use tools and invent boats is a result of evolution. So, using boats and harpoon guns to hunt and kill whales is completely natural, thus any extinction is just natural selection.

Of course, thsi does make me wonder how many times we attempt to save an endangered animal just to slow down evolution. For example: last year two whales swam up a river in California(?). Being in freshwater they begin to develop skin diseases that could become life threatening. Humans did everything they could to save them from trying to scare them back out to sea and giving them medicines for their skin diseases. So, basically we allowed creatures too dumb to remain in their safe habitat and not continue to go where they will die to breed. In a few generations we will have an entire pod swimming up rivers.

But that's stupid reasoning, because marine reptiles have been successful in the water for far longer than dolphins and whales have. Why aren't there any outcries for preserving salt water crocodiles?
There are some, but it is hard to tell someone not to kill the thing that ate their kid.

Are sea turtles becoming extinct?
Yes, they even close beaches during egg laying and nesting seasons. And in Hawaii if you purposely try to make contact with a sea turtle while snorkeling it is illegal. Now, the fact that a sea turtle will swim up and get in your face says something about the benefit they offer nature.

I can't remember. Are sea snakes endangered?
I don't know, and the only guy with a big enough public identity to actually be heard saying to preserve snakes was stabbed by a stingray.

It's more than that - they believe that we shouldn't have ANY control over ANY animal. We shouldn't eat them, use their fur, ivory, leather, keep them to work or even keep them as pets. We can't use any part of them even if they die of natural causes, nor can we take any animal from its environment even if it means the extinction of the species.

They're quite, quite mad.

They're quite, quite mad.
True, but they did come up with those "I'd rather go naked" ads with Alicia Silverstone. I'd link the ad, but it may push the AUP.

Give credit where credit is due.

I never saw those ads! Where are they damn it! :dopey:
She covers herself up, so the most you see is the top of her butt crack when she is sitting.

And you have all the info you need for a You Tube search.

Seriously, what's gone wrong with this world, we're trying to stop whaling, and we get called racist!? What in the 🤬 has defending animals got to do with race? That video's been headlining on the news and everywhere here. Another point is we are the most multicultural country in the world. How could we be racist? In my opinion accusing us of being racist is racist themselves. :grumpy: I am really getting tired with the ignorance and racism here. I agree that we shouldn't be killing kangaroos and stuff but they are being worse so what are they on about?

What are your thoughts on this issue?
It's on youtube. I don't know if you go on there much, or read comments on that site. It's full of idiots there.

As for the message on the video, I closed it after couple of minutes. Looks like the poster of the video is going off of the race related history and incident(s) from Australia's past. It didn't make any sense though, and the video never really validated or backed up their ridiculous opinion either. Waste of time.

P.S. I grew up in Japan, and I had whale meat(from a can) once. It was OK, but like Danoff, I still prefer beef. :D

I post comments there, i'm GT4GTR. :D But most of the posters are against us though.

I can't read it.

I would never buy whale meat off them or support them.

I'm a6m50 on there, so I'm on there too, but I think you get the point. :D

I can't read it.
It was in English first, then translated to Japanese. Then again, just waste of our time.
I would never buy whale meat off them or support them.
In my defense, I was probably like just ten at the time. :sly:
