Japanese with US cars..

Right - and the ones Japan imports to Europe top out at 155 (and most Euro homeland cars top out at 155 too). Know what the Viper is 'electronically limited' to? :D

I don't think it's really a fuel consumption issue. I'm sure the Lancer EVO RS Sprint burns through more gas than your average Bentley. What it could be is that since there *is* the space issue, small cars dominate, with small engines inside. To make powerful cars, rather than totally replace the engine, just add more "inventive" performance options (turbo, VTEC, etc.). There could also be the fact that Japan has very little in the way of raw materials, especially iron ore. A 330HP turbo-4 engine requires significantly less steel and aluminum than last year's SVT Cobra V8.

So available space and raw materials keep Japan from building muscle-type cars. What keeps them from buying US cars? Japan is highly nationalist. Great pride is taken by everything the nation produces. It's not like an individual's pride Westerners have. It's pride in the country (or company) as an entity. Therefore, the cars Japan makes are "better" than US cars. This nationalist pride came about in the late 1930's/early 1940's, during the rise of Japan's military. They kicked out Ford, GM, and just every other non-Japanese factory owner. I don't know if there are any now, but it certainly was a long time before any were allowed back.

And, uh, I didn't know about the 112MPH limit. I guess those Skylines are cuising around in 6th gear finally getting double-digit MPG. ;)

Wait a sec - I thought we realised that the Japanese Transport Ministry put a 300hp (theoritical, uninforced) limit on Japanese cars, and anything over this limit is frowned upon.

Japan is a nationalist country, agreed, but the obvious reason they buy Japanese cars is because they don't have to pay more (because US cars are imports) and for the love of God - Japanese cars are better-built, and always have been!

That's on export only, and it's a gentleman's agreement, nothing official. Within Japan, it's a bit more relaxed. There's some very high-powered cars on the grey market. Then there's the fact that the limit seems to change depending on who you talk to. 276HP, 280HP, 300HP. Dyno tests of stock Skyline GT-R's have usually been above 300HP.... I could swear the EVO6 RS Extreme had 340HP, but Ralliart changed their site. No cars at all! I did find this though:

hey any japanese car can pass over 112mph even a civic (stock)

about why they don't buy u.s cars: they make laws to hard to pass, or they make to importers pay to much tax so the car price will be to high.
and if you have a better car for less money than u.s car why would you buy a u.s car.

the fuel economy is another big factor to keep on mind.

contamination is other factor the american cars is not the better on that room,because the luxury u.s cars are v-8,j.c they have 4-6 a few of them are turbo's ( no many v-8 japanese)

and yes they are so proud of japanese products,since they born
learn about culture and the diference between them & u.s.

they take the education like life style ( if you don't finish the school and graduate from something you are a fool for your family

i saw in tv show they have books in the subway and you can read it for free,no locks or gards are checking the books ( o.k they have a camera for that)

for that and many more reasons u.s can't sell many cars in japan.

But really, the Mustang is probably the only worth while American muscle car nowadays. But that's all it is, a baby dragster.
 
Hey, don't get me wrong. I'd never buy a Mustang. In fact I can't think of a single American car I want. Realistically I'd love to get an Altima, maybe a Maxima. And I did see a '95 R34 for 30k on the net once. That's tempting.

I was just noting that as far as American muscle goes, Mustang probably takes it. That is, of course, not including Vipers ot Vettes.
