Happy New Year to you all.

One of the most grim Internet stories would probably be John Titor. A man who claims he is from the year 2036 and invented time travel through the very old IBM 5100, he predicted that there would be nuclear war by Russia this year. And it would kill 3 billion people. The United States, the European Union, and China would be destroyed. Scary, huh? And his last post was in 2001, and he pretty much remained silent since then.

What do you think? Would it be the truth or is it just something to carry people away?

Even if he were from the future, the mere act of going to the past to inform people of what's going to happen in the future would disturb everything and cause the future to take a different direction.

But no, obviously it's not true.

Well in that case, maybe he's telling the truth, but was smarter than everyone else, revealed the truth early and when it came time to push the buttons of doom, the button pushers said, "Nah, I can't make that time travelling guy look legit, so I'm not going to push this button".

Cue the Twilight Zone music...

He's from an alternate universe.

Conveniently enough, according to this urban legend the infinite multiverse hypothesis is true. Each occasion one travels through time you actually end up in a parallel universe thus eliminating the grandfather paradox and covering the vagueness and inaccuracies of 'future events' all wrapped up in a non-falsifiable ball of lies.

Hoax.

Until I see some real photographic evidence, I won't believe this clearly crazed individual. And he's had predictions that have already failed and time travel... Whilst it would be awesome to see it (time travel) happen, I honestly think it is a pipe dream.

This. It definitely sounds like a hoax. I won't believe this story until I see some real, believable evidence. And I don't see any.

We will find out if it is real if there is any nuclear war starting by the end of the year. But I am 101% positive that JT does not exist. If time travel will allegedly exist, why have we not seen anyone from the future?

Nope.

The following from Wiki:

All of the following predictions are of events said to have occurred in John Titor's original world line:

The posts were met with skepticism when they were being posted, but it was impossible to prove beforehand that the predicted events would not happen. Even then, because Titor claimed the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics was correct, effectively meaning that his travel was from aparallel universe and that things could occur differently than he had predicted, the details he presented were unfalsifiable.

One of Titor's earliest assertions was that CERN would discover the basis for time travel sometime around 2001, with the creation of miniature black holes about half a year after his departure. This did not occur. An article occurring generally around the time he had predicted about miniature black holes being created by CERN (a recurring theme, also ascribed to Fermilab and Brookhaven at various times[13]) was taken by some to be evidence of this claim, but these events did not occur either.

Civil war did not break out after the 2004 presidential election, nor did conflicts or military involvement in 2012. There were only protests from 2004 about the Iraq War, in 2011 there was the Occupy Wall Street movement and in 2012 there were the cases WikiLeaks of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, a National Security Agency high technician, involved in a secret files leakage of possible privacy violations of U.S. by the government for 'security reasons'.

Titor also unambiguously claimed that the last Olympics would occur in 2004. While it is unclear if he meant the summer or winter Olympics, several of both have occurred since this time. There were many rumors that there would be a boycott of the 2008 Summer Olympics in China for democratic problems about human rights violations from China's government against Tibetan monks.

Titor wrote that the President in 2004 would have been a modern-day Abraham Lincoln. No president in recent history fits this description.

==========

If time travel will allegedly exist, why have we not seen anyone from the future?

How would you know if someone you saw was from the future? It's not like they'd walk around with little signs saying "I'm from the future, AMA".

I wonder if he is related to that one guy who posted here a few years ago about owning a Ferrari F41, F42, F43, etc and all the other bat:censored: crazy stuff.

Titor was obviously telling the truth. The fact that we are talking about him as a "current event" thirteen years after he stopped posting shows that we gave clearly travelled back in time.

There are three possible reasons for the posts this "time traveller" posted. One, the guy has schizophrenia. Two, the guy was in drugs. Three, the guy tries to make fun of idiots who believe in things like this.

I'm going with the first two.

Hoax for sure!

He came back to get a computer they needed or will need in his time line. But returning to the past, it will be nearly impossible to return to your own time line. So why bother coming back to the past to retreive something you will never be able to get to your own time line?

It's a modern day version of this...

Also, a major flaw in this whole thing is how specific he has been about his "predictions", you're supposed to be vague enough that there are multiple possible translations therefor making it so you technically aren't wrong when nothing happens.

What if all he had to do was to leave the computer in as safe place, and left clues to get it. So, whatever the timeline, the people in the future can get the computer. Will the computer exist in all possible permutations ? Just like Egypt pyramid should exist in all of them.

Nah, it's part of the plan.

In this day and age I doubt anybody expects a hoax like that to last very long before it's disproven. By making relatively specific predictions the hoax gains credibility in the eyes of those who expect hoaxes to make generic predictions. It sacrifices longevity of the hoax (which is probably unattainable anyway) for immediate credibility, a sensible tradeoff. If you're gonna troll people with stuff like this, get in early and get in hard before you get busted (or before people who can actually think turn up).

I doubt the guy who made it up expected it to last as long as it did, although it did spawn Steins Gate which is actually a really good story.

Maybe his predictions didn't come true because,

He didn't succeed in his mission.
He did succeed in his mission.
Posting on forums in 2000 altered the future.
His time-line was different enough to mean he was wrong.

Or.... it's all nonsense

However things like CERN creating black holes did happen, just way out of the time he predicted they would.

It would be cool to think that someone might have actually travelled back in time and predictably we didn't believe them. Stories like this play into our explorative nature that's why they have such longevity.

However things like CERN creating black holes did happen, just way out of the time he predicted they would.

Have they actually done it? Last I heard they were trying, but I haven't heard that they actually succeeded in creating microscopic black holes.

Have you got a link or something so I can read more about it? I like that sort of stuff.

Do we really need to go over this again? He was full of 🤬, CERN hasn't discovered the basis for time travel so far, I've never heard of them forming black holes so that's a recent thing and, unlike Russia nuking everything, what goes on at CERN wouldn't be affected by a "time traveller". Science is science, and gibberish posted online won't affect objective reality.
