Just arrived in Hong Kong ...

You mean we gave china HK back so china could consider it not part of china?

It was agreed in the handover that HK would continue to operate as a semi autonomous country for a minimum of 50 years (35 remaining). As it is a special administrative region you cannot move freely between it and China. Both countries have their own passports and visa's.

It's basically a transition period, after 50 years HK will return entirely to China but no one knows at that point what China will be like or if they will make any changes to the setup as it currently stands.

what are hostiles? i know what "hostile" means but got no idea what "hostiles" and shem are ...?

Hostiles are what I call the less than savoury b&bs. Shem is...I have no idea...

If you went there, you wouldn't need a visa for a short stay on a UK passport. If you came to China you'd need a visa, yet HK is still part of China. Confusing, eh?

I'm thinking of going back to HK for a visit too in the next couple of months to pick up my free money as well as doing some site seeing with a friend who's never been to Hong Kong. Probably visit China as well since I got the special visa card that allows free access into China from HK. Though I still haven't decided where in China.

Anyone wanna help compile a list of things to do, places to visit, food to eat in HK? I've lived there as a kid at mid-level, but it's changed so much that I would fail as a tour guide now. :scared:

So far the general ones I would think of.

1. Tram + Peak.
2. Wanchai, Causeway Bay (Shopping lovers.)
3. Disney/ Ocean Park.
4. Stanley + the beaches (Shallow Bay, Deep Water Bay?)
6. The big buddha + Chairlift (360)

If anyone could give some local tips about food or shopping. Please do. I want to avoid the tourist traps for my friend. :D

Chongqing yo!

Haha, I was thinking of either Xian, Guilin, Jangjiajie or Lhasa if I can get permission to go to Tibet. I definitely want to visit the beautiful scenery before the pollution hits, before the tranquil places become crowded with tourists and security gets tighter.

I still remember how my parents told me when they went to Xian 30 years ago, they could go down to the pits to see the Terracotta Army up close with a rope in between, and the statues all had colour on them. Now, you can only stare from a distance.

So been here nearly 2 weeks and i've seen like 15 out of the 20 major attractions here. Many of them i saw accidently, i wasnt sure where i was going.

I was just roaming around the city and ended up in Hollywood Street, then Soho, then Lan Kwai Fong ...

So far i have to say that i really enjoy the city even though now im staying more at my parents apartment cause i've already seen alot of Hong Kong. Been to the IFC mall a dozen times aswell. Hehe.

One thing that kind of bothers me is the very poluted air.

So, in this case, any other recommendations on what to do or whatever?

Cheers

Eat. Lots.

Have you seen the Big Buddha or gone out to Lantau Island at all? Have you visited Ocean Park? Cheung Chau is kind of interesting with a lot more of an old coastal village flavor with lots of fish stands and markets. How much/what have you seen over in Kowloon? Have you taken the Star Ferry across the harbor (slow, but views can be quite breathtaking). Are you interested in doing hiking at all?

nope haven't seen the things you mentioned but i have been to kowloon but it was at night and i was with my dad and another business friend and he showed us around.

this weekend were heading over to macau and gonna spend the night there.
