Just got GT2 - Have some doubts.

Hey guys, after years, i finally got a decent used copy of GT2. Not a single scratch on the discs. Now i only need GT Concept 2002 Tokyo-Seoul to complete the collection.

Anyway, i know GT2 has some weird bugs, and i already searched and read some of them. But while i was testing the discs i noticed some weird things.

On Simulation Disc:
- After i watch a replay on Replay Theater, if i press /\ to go back to the main menu, the screen stays black and nothing happens.

- Does the Simulation Disc contain a presentation? It went directly to the main menu

- At the simulation mode, some screens load faster then others. Is it normal?

On Arcade Mode Disc:
- On Tahiti Road, during a replay, sometimes the cars seem to be flying (the road does not appear - back scenery)

Thanks in advance.

PS: The save game problems destroy only the GT2 save or the whole 15 blocks of game saves of the PS1 memory card?

About the black screen: Hmmm, where did you get your game?

There are 3 or 4 versions of GT2....1.0 and 1.1 were both heavily flawed. I originally had a version 1.0 that I got off the internet from some loser on eBay. One of the bugs I encountered was the black screen in between menus. I would click on something and the entire screen would go black. Then, nothing would happen. :( Other times, I would be right in the middle of a race and the screen would freeze. After I got the Greatest Hits version (1.2) I never encountered these 2 bugs but I still had my garage deleted....but that was kinda my fault. Anyways, it sounds like you got one of the earlier versions. Where did you get your GT2? How much does the car wash cost? 5000 credits or 50? This is how you can tell which version you have because earlier versions had a car wash that cost 5,000 credits.

2nd question: No, the sim disc has no presentation movie. You can only watch this on the Arcade disc.

3rd: Again, this sounds like you got an earlier version of GT2. All the menu screens should load at approximately the same rate, give or take a second or 2. One exception is the Event Generator, which takes up to a full minute.

4th: I can remember how disappointed I was when I did my very first GT2 race (Sunday Cup @ Tahiti). Yeah, Tahiti is the worst track graphically..I mean, you can drive thru the sand at the side of the road and no dust gets kicked up. If you watch the race during a replay looking out the back of your car, entire hills suddenly vanish! This is merely a case of shoddy programming. I do love the beach houses, telephone poles, and the cumulus clouds in the background, though. Think of the cars flying thru the air as a sort of mirage effect :)

Not sure what you mean about the last question. Are you having problems saving your game?

Thanks for the answers. I'll check the carwash cost so i can check the version.

I can tell for sure it's a normal version, not greatest hits.

The last question was about the memory card save. I haven't even started saving the game yet, but i want to know if any of the problems caused by GT2 bugs (like you had with the garage being deleted) affects only the GT2 save or the other game saves on the PS1 memory card?

On the back of the case it says 4-15 blocks, meaning the save can occupy the fulll memory card right?

No, the garage delete problem doesn't affect other parts of your memory card, in fact, it won't affect your game, either. The only parts of GT2 that it disturbs are your garage and the 400m, 1000m, and max speed records. If you never use the Machine Tests, don't worry about it..it only affects those of us who are obsessed with 400m, 1000m, and Max Speed records (myself included). It can happen with Greatest Hits version, too.

I've lost 4 garages over the past 2 years, but now I do all my testing on a specific memory card and I haven't had any problems on that memory card.

Yes, GT2 can take 4 to 15 blocks of memory. If you ever save a replay, it'll actually give you a choice of how much memory you want to devote towards future replays (up to 15 blocks).

If I were you, I'd eventually make your way over to Target or Best Buy or one of those evil chains and get the Greatest Hits version. Last I checked, it was only $14.99.

Here's the unofficial guide:

(Version 1.0) Car Wash says 5000 Cr, Muscle Car Cup licenses are incorrect, #6 Mark Martin's Taurus SHO as racing modification, 98.2% complete maximum.

(Version 1.1) Car Wash says 5000 Cr, Muscle Car Cup licenses are incorrect, #6 Mark Martin's Taurus SHO is gone, 98.2% complete maximum.

(Version 1.2) Car Wash says 50 Cr, Muscle Car Cup licenses fixed, #6 Mark Martin's Taurus SHO is gone, 100% complete maximum

If you modify a Ford Taurus (South City) in 1.0, you'll wind up with Mark Martin's NASCAR Taurus when you buy a race kit for it. They quickly got rid of this within a matter of a month or so, presumably because Sony / Polyphony didn't have the proper license agreement. In later versions, you get a generic Taurus when you race modify it.

Also, if you do the 2nd Tahiti Maze rally race, in version 1.0, the Peugeot will drive straight into the wall and won't go any further. In Versions 1.1 and 1.2, it drives the entire course. Version 1.0 also had a slew of typos and other minor glitches that got fixed, but you get the point...like I said, I would just get the Greatest Hits version...it's better than getting far into the game and one day it freezes up on you or something.

I'm in Brazil. No Target or Best Buy stores down here. Actually it was already difficult to find this copy i got.

99% of all game stores in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, only care about the latest game consoles from PS2 to Xbox 360. I got GT2 from Mercado Livre (Brazilian ebay).

I'll try to find a copy of GT2 greatest hits. 👍

Aww man, that is harsh! I don't know what to tell you. I would say go on eBay and if you get a bad copy you can report whoever sold it to you on there. But then that kinda sucks, too.

This was one of the things Polyphony Digital promised when they released GT2 in 1999: an automatic KPH / MPH converter. It didn't get developed, though...so looks like you'll need to use Sucahyo's formula.

Okay, mine's strange...

The car wash costs 50 credits but the Muscle cup still states that it requires an International-A licence. What would mine be? It also says the word "Platinum" on the front with tons of silver on the cover.

Sounds like version 1.2 to me. All my muscleCup races are I-A and car wash is 50 credits, and I have Greatest Hits which is 1.2. I'm guessing that your “platinum” signifies the number of copies sold.

A game goes Platimun when it's reached a certain number of sales, I don't know if it's used outside of Europe, but only big selling games go Platinum and a platinum copy will be 1.2.
