Outgoing Sony Games Exec Gets The Rarest PS3 of All As a Going Away Present

Kaz Hirai helped usher in the PS3 to a hungry, sometimes skeptical audience. He's gone off to run the whole damn corporation at Sony, leaving the Sony Computer Entertainment division behind. The PlayStation folks presented him with a special thank-you gift, though. You need to work for Sony for years—presumably making millions of dollars while you're at it—to score this one-of-a-kind PS3.

Kaz Hirai's SCE leaving gifts: a bunch of flowers and a custom PS3

Kaz Hirai has officially bid farewell to Sony's PlayStation division and, as president and CEO of Sony Corporation as a whole, moved on to higher things.Sony Computer Entertainment threw a goodbye party for him to say thanks.

It was attended by SCE president Shuhei Yoshida, who posted pictures of the ceremony on his Twitter account. Hirai, looking dashing in a simple lavender shirt [does he have any other? -Ed] and smart black trousers, was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Disarmed by their scent, Hirai was then gifted a specially-designed custom PlayStation 3 console, coloured silver and wine red.

"A special PS3 custom made for Kaz", commented Yoshida. "Not for sale."

Sony announced earlier this week that Hirai had given up his role as representative director and chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, although he will retain a part-time seat on the Board.

This is not some simple paint job, its seems more technical than that. Like others have said I wish we could get some better pics of it, what on earth is that red thing on the back!? PS2 chipset? water cooling? Vita holder? :sly:

Might even be an indicator of what the next PS3 hardware revision might look like. Whatever it is its a pretty sweet leaving present, sure beats the typical golden watch but Kaz was probably like 'Oh Yay... just what I need, another PS3 to go with the other hundred I have in my house'.

Robin.

Who would replace him for the SCE chairman role? I reckon Jack Tretton?

Oh by the way, nice custom PS3 that is made for Kaz. :)

Thought it was a prototype for the next gen console? Sneak peak?

It was decided months ago that it was Andrew House. The same Andrew House that presented the Storybook accessory during E3 this year.

Right, thanks. 👍

Can't believe that Andrew presented that wonderbook for the PS move, which lasted for 15mins during the conference. A waste of time really, I mean who really cares for that really?

He didn't even mention any PS Vita titles or any new updates for it, what so ever. 👎

I agree that it was a complete waste of time, and half of it they were trying to work out the sensor to get it to work properly.

But since were not here to criticize the FAILbook, I would like to weigh in on the Kaz PS3 one off. As I illustrated in the PS4 discussion thread, I feel that the one off points to the fact that if Sony wanted to, they could address a lot of criticisms that current hardware poses with PS2 backwards compatibility. It appears that the red area on the unit itself, playing theroycraft here, houses PS2 hardware as illustrated in a patent application filed a number of years ago by Sony themselves.

In summary, it could mean that Kaz himself is testing new hardware.

Nice gift. But really.. that is what they give him?? That red part in back is kind of an eyesore.

I'm going to bet that it was one of the prototype mockups for the slim PS3 that never made it into production. The red part probably does something useless like glowing red light when the PS3 is powered on.

Those are lousy guesses guys... it's a specially designed watercooled 12GB RAM extension, capable of hosting 24h Nürburgring events with 350 cars on track.
