Looking at the first-generation Optima, it’s hard to believe the Korean nameplate has grown to become one of the better looking and better equipped sedans of the midsize segment. But that became a fact in 2011, when Kia launched the third-gen car , and it’s about to gain new meaning with the fourth-generation model that just broke cover at the 2015 New York Auto Show . Sporting an evolutionary design inspired by the Sportspace Concept , the Optima got better in just about any department for the 2016 model year.

Not surprisingly, the Optima’s new design is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, building on the handsome cues of the third-generation sedan. The slightly reshaped "tiger nose" grille is now both wider and narrower, while the headlamps have been redesigned to blend in perfectly. The lower grille is also wider on the new car, while the foglamps received vertical surrounds on top of being moved further toward the fenders. Thanks to these modifications, the front fascia is more aggressive.

The third-gen Optima cues are more visible around back, but there are plenty of details that make this sedan stand out. The taillights are new and equipped with LED technology, while the trunk lid features crisper character lines. Down below, the revised diffuser-like element houses a pair of massive exhaust pipes. Most of these details are obviously inspired by the Kia Sportspace Concept shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Under the hood, Kia will continue to offer the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder and the turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-banger of the third-generation sedan, as well as the six-speed automatic transmission.
