Kids' Prize

There was a really good thread a while back (years back) about this topic in which the kid that posted it went into detail. Trying to find it...

Played this game for years on the ps1 and never saw this prize. Just started playing it again via FPse on my evo 4g and received a kiddie prize.
Oops, did i just drag the thread life on for one more year. lol.

I think it really depends on the version of GT2. I've taken probably 1000 license tests in GT2, and never received one "kiddie prize" (I've probably failed half of those tests overall).

However, I did convert a GT game save (with all three licenses passed) to a GT2 conversion, which permits you to effectively skip twenty tests comprising the B and A licenses. Out of curiosity, I checked the licence trophy count: 20 yellow and green chevrons.

This was NTSC v1.0, by the way. I call it one of those GT2 mysteries, because there's more than a few tests I'd fail by hundredths (or less) repeatedly...never received one of those things.

I have the PAL version of the game and I've never once seen this medal.
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, lol.
Also fifth time resurrecting!

I've heard about, but never actually seen the prize. I know it's used as a placeholder prize when data is transferred from GT1 to GT2, but I've never seen a screenshot of the "GET KID'S PRIZE" screen. My dad claims it exists, as he could never actually pass the Super License test with the Viper, but i never saw the screen. I wonder if there is a screenshot of that very license award screen, since I can't find any.

I got that medal back when I played GT2 and I wondered for years what it was... I remember it was the license test with the Alfa race car on Rome night. But I'm still not sure what exactly did I do to get it..

It's definitely one of the more bizarre and poorly-described areas of GT2. Many people swear to have received the "kiddie prize" several times, and others (myself included), not at all.

After you convert (which takes just a few moments) your GT/GT1 game save (with B, A, and I-A licenses completed), you go back to My Home and see your statistics...there's the yellow-and-green medals. There's no "award screen" in this case.

Over twelve years later, someone has to step up to the plate and show how this occurs...never seen it "awarded" for missing bronze with my own eyes via screenshot nor while playing. Maybe it depends on the game version and region.

In over a decade of playing, starting new games many times, and running through the license tests almost every time, I've only been awarded the kiddie prize one time, about three years ago. I had been doing license tests for about an hour and if I recall correctly, on that particular test I had missed bronze by quite a wide margin (about half a second or so, I think), and instead of the standard screen that comes up when you fail the test, I got the kiddie prize instead. I'm pretty sure it was one of the early license tests, maybe for the B license, or one of the very early ones for the A license. It may have been one of tests for I-C, but I doubt it.

Here's some info: My first copy was 1.0, and I played it on an old-style PS1, the kind we all used to call a PSX back in the day. Never got it playing that, even though in the beginning it was just about all I could do just to finish the braking tests. When that copy wore out, I ended up with a 'Greatest Hits' (actual greatest hits, not one of the ones with a sticker on the packaging), for which 1.2 codes work. I was playing this version on a PS2 when I won the kiddie prize, and had failed the test only once before I got the kiddie prize.

I know what you mean, I remember the kiddie medal as placeholders for the transfer, though I don't remember the IA license being filled by the kiddie medals, just B and A. Which version are you talking about? I've played V1.1 and V1.2, and I don't remember IA being filled. And yes, it's been way too long, somebody has to have a screenshot after 12 years if it indeed exists. I know it's possible to get it as a normal license prize, why does nobody have a pic of it after so long? I'll keep looking, though I likely won't come up with anything.

I've seen some text replicating the appearance of the symbol and the real life version of it, but still no screenshots directly from the game. What's taking so long?

I got lots of kiddie prizes first time through.

You get it when you can't pass (obviously?).

It seemed to arrive after lots of trying. I'm not sure if you merely need to make lots of attempts while still failing, or if there is a margin within which you need to come. But I don't think it's as simple as a an easier margin than bronze. It might be something like "get five results within the margin" or something, though that sounds like a lot of bookkeeping for the game to do for such a feature.

So a really skillful driver should try repeating the one test for a long time, deliberately failing, but coming somewhat close, and the prize might appear. Probably easiest done on the Super License.

Hmm. Maybe it was taken out of post 1.0 versions?

Probably just intentionally failing to upshift or using too high a gear repeatedly might do the trick.

I don't think so. If I remember, my dad had V1.1 and never had GT1, and I specifically remember that there was the fabled green and yellow book filling one of the tests, as he could never beat the Super License test with the Viper. Not sure about V1.2. But we need a screencap now.

Here is the detail of triggers from Japanese book "Gran Turismo 2 Official Guidebook" in Apr,2000.
for example, needs 10 times finished between 0:39.801 and 0:41.000 in B-1.

If that can also apply to NTSC users, that might help! Might as well grab out our GT2s and start trying this. So it's saying you have to get between 39.801 and 41.000 10 times to get "The book"? Interesting. We'll just have to try.

I can confirm the chart above is correct.

I also made a code to make this process shorter, i'll post it in my gameshark topic soon.

That's actually what it looks like? Okay then. THANK YOU XENN. It's been far too long for this. Perhaps you could post a video of it happening? That I'd like to see. Also, I wonder what would happen if you got all Kid's Prizes on your license the hard way like that. And I don't mean GT1 data transfer. Actually getting the kiddie prize manually on all of them. It might be possible with whatever that code is.

Sweet. Gonna watch that now. Can't believe it took so long to get a shot of it. Now we should see what happens if we get all kiddie prizes on a license. Is it the same as all golds or all bronzes? Maybe I should grab out GT2 and give it a shot. The only hard part is somehow getting within the same time frame so many times, as I don't have a 'Shark to cheat my way to this. I'll go try it. Trial and Error, meet There's No Harm in Trying. It seems easy enough to do.

Annotations are added for info how to get the B-1 Kids Prize.

You win, Xenn! :)

Never seen the fixed-lap time hack, but somehow I knew you'd figure that one out...so was that 10 misses?

Yep, you need to fail the test 10 times within the time required to get the Kids Prize.

That should be all of them, i'll go over them again and fix any mistakes.

Thanks to Edward_V12 for that chart!

Xenn, you're one of my favourite people ever. It's mad how people still share such a passion for GT2 nearly 13 years on

Sweet, I'm gonna go try for all Kid's Prizes now to see what happens. Hope I can do it without that handy hack. Or not. If any others are gonna go for all kiddie prizes on a license, go for Super. The time frames are huge. The smallest gap between bronze and Kid's Prize Limit is a massive 5 seconds. So give it a try.

That's interesting - I had always been under the impression that all you had to do was fail the test for X times consecutively. I had never heard of the time frame requirement until now - thanks for the heads up! 👍
