Okay, long story short I was playing a football match today and I play in goal, about 25 minutes into the second half (15 minutes left) I went down on the ball against the other teams striker and got studs straight into my knee.

I have a light scratch there but that's no biggy, but it's the impact that has sort of seized up my knee. I also have two games in Salou, Spain on Tuesday and Wednesday. And as the only goalkeeper I have a lot of pressure on me to play those games.

I played to the end today but was in a lot of pain and let in a goal in the last 10 seconds over it. Is there anyway to help reduce the swelling and pain enough to play.

I can walk normal enough with a slight limp but feel as though I'd be unable to jog on it.

Ibuprofen and Ice packs are all I can recommend.

*Inserts obvious arrow-to-the-knee joke*

Thanks but I had a quick look through there before I posted as situations are quite different, my knee has to support my whole body, under strenuous conditions, as opposed to Tom's injury which is as difficult as mine but for different reasons.

And I suppose painkillers and ice would help but I was wondering would it help to heavily strap my knee up and if there was any exercises I could do to help the movement in it.

Well I would see a doctor.
There could be fluid leeking from the knee that will freeze it also how far did the studs go in? Could cause an infection.

Well they didn't pierce the skin which it would seem you are implying, just left a slight graze.

But location-wise it was on my left knee equal height to the kneecap but just to the right of it. So it may have dislodged it ever so slightly but nothing noticible.

And I won't be able to see a doctor as tomorrow is a bank holiday and I depart early Tuesday morning.

Well I completely destroyed a ligament in my shoulder and thought I should just go home and rest. It was 5 days before I saw a doctor so I was just suggesting the cautious route.

Nonsense. Doctors are always available.

Well I could find a doctor if I drove 70 miles to the nearest city and waited for 5+ hours until they got around to me..

Oh and that wasn't directed at you, I was saying that towards Dennisch.

? I know the I can't see a doctor thing was. I was just adding to what I said earlier and relating it to what you said.

Well, if that's the case, put ice on it, take some painkillers, and if it's still swollen, go find a doctor, just in case something is busted in your knee. And take that advice from someone who has multiple scars on his knees.

Will go look for some Panadol now and get some frozen food on it 👍

Also keep it elevated. Helps reduce inflammation. Ice for 20 min, take a 20 min break and then 20 min on again. Also, did you feel any pops or has your knee been giving out?

And if you must play Tuesday then you probably should have your knee taped up - by a professional.

I don't understand what you mean by giving out? If you mean just going really weak at points when you are standing in it then yes it has a bit.

Unfortunately I don't know any professional physio's. Hopefully my manager knows his way around knee's.

You might have sprained a ligament in your knee friend. If I were you I would go to the doctors as soon as you can. If it still feels weak by the time you play and you still haven't gone to the doctors, I would highly reccomend you NOT play. If it indeed sprained, you could risk tearing something and that is the worst. I tore my ACL and it ruined my American football career.

I understand. I will not be able to see a doctor before I depart for Barcelona but if it still feels weak I will be highly unlikely to play. I was meant to have a game tomorrow but the manager forfeited the game as it was in a unimportant completion.

I realised I have until Wednesday for the first game and Thursday until the second so I now have a extra day but will still be unable to get to my local GP.

You live in southern Ireland don't you? If so im gutted you are not covered by the NHS they would see you any day close to you.

I live in the far west of Ireland. County Galway to be precise, very near the sea with the nearest hospital 70 miles away.

The HSE are nothing but a load of BS as far as I'm concerned anyway.

^ You killed us all to get independence :P.

Try a doctor in spain? If you have travel insurance and you can convice them you got it in spain you will be covered for private healthcare costs.

I do have a E111 card so all healthcare costs in the EU should be covered. Also have a Irish medical card anyway. I'll go on Wednesday night after the first game if it still hurts.

I have some questions for you.

Where exactly were you cleated? The knee cap, the muscle above it, the inside of the knee, the outside? Did the knee bend any one way? Is the swelling local to where you were hit or is it throught the entire knee? Do you have any pain on the opposite side of the knee from where you were hit?

Okay, I was cleated on the top right of my left knee just outside the kneecap. So it was the muscle to the top right looking down on the inside of my knee. My knee was flexed at roughly 90degrees the correct way going into the tackle so hyper flexing isn't a problem. The pain and swelling are local to where I was hit with the pain being slightly above the the kneecap and the swelling is about there with the pain slightly higher up.

Any more information can be given upon request.
