Knee Injury

I can get information from looking at the photos.
Well I could if I was a doctor.

There's not much to see really except for a swollen lump with the slightest graze on it..

By what you are describing you probably bruised your quadriceps muscle, more specifically the VMO. The biggest issue with that is the swelling and pain will try to prevent you from bending it and putting much weight on it. Not something you need to rush to the doctor for but may want to if it doesn't improve. It is impossible to say that is for sure what it is over the internet though and not actually evaluating the knee. But by description and location of pain that's the way it sounds. Take everything I write with caution and listen to your body. You know if something is truly messed up.

What you should start doing is R.I.C.E. like mentioned before but also improving range of motion. So start by icing, up to 30 minutes if real ice, 15-20 if using a freezer pack. With a freezer pack make sure to place a paper towel or some barrier between the pack and the skin. After icing, lie flat on your back and try to slowly slide your heel towards your butt, stopping short of pain. Do this repeatedly for a minute, 3 sets one minute each. Your motion will improve doing this. You can also lightly ride a stationary bike to regain motion, the higher the seat is the easier it will be on your knee, as it feels better lower the seat. You can ice once every two hours, but always make sure the skins temperature feels the same as the other leg before icing again.

If it's feeling better tomorrow you may want to start doing strengthening by doing quad sets. Laying on your back tighten your quad muscle, the upper thigh to knee cap muscle, and hold it for 3 seconds, relax for 3 seconds and repeat for 3 sets of 10-15. You can do this 2-3 times per day.

If anything you try increases your pain then stop. See your doctor if pain worsens or doesn't get better. Any instability is bad, a little weakness should improve. As for the game it would be good if you could get a knee sleeve, but I know those are harder to come by in Europe. You really don't want to tape the knee, it's tricky and can cause other pain and problems.

Good luck.👍

Well it seems I have full motion of it again but when I tense my quads I get a unbearable pain in one of the muscles in the area, it may help if I post a photo highlighting where the pain is.

Knee sleeves are surprisingly hard to come by and are extremely expensive in my area. But I believe are extremely beneficial. I know a friend with some as he has had knee problems before so I may ask to borrow one of him.

Thanks and I will keep you posted on the movement/pain in it.

You don't want to do the quad sets today, you just injured it hours ago. Just concentrate on icing and range of motion. Try the quad sets tomorrow or Tuesday if you feel you need another day.

Okay thanks. If you knew me you'd know I'm always trying to get a step ahead. In online enduro events I'm fighting for positions on Lap 1 :dopey:

Okay will have a good sleep now and work on motion tomorrow before I depart and have a good swim in a Beach at Salou Tuesday afternoon.

Thank you very much for your input, all greatly appreciated.

You were a football player once, but you took studs to your knee.

Wow, quick off the mark. you beat me to it!

My advice would be what others have said; get strapped up, see a sports doctor if possible and Deep Heat the bugger.

I'd also recommend wearing a sports brace on it until it heals. I use them on both knees for cycling and they really provide extra support at the joint.

I still don't quite understand the joke..

And yeah, other opinions have helped a lot, especially mcfizzle

Wanna send a Knee Brace to hotel Calypso in Salou for me? :dopey:

Edit made a mistake with names.

You don't want to heat it for the first 48-72 hours after the injury, ice only during that period. Heat increases blood flow, and this injury, like all acute injuries already has increased blood flow and swelling. Heating right away will feel good at the time but actually cause the swelling and stiffness to increase. Ice reduces swelling and pain so stick to that. Now the hour before your first game, throw some heat on that sucker to help the muscle loosen up.

So we're you able to play yesterday?

Turns out it was only some heavy bruising around the knee/quad area. I was able I play easily and made some good saves including a penalty save. Out of 4 penalties they scored 1

Still some pain if I put pressure over it but otherwise it's perfect.

Thanks for all the help to anyone who posted.

Did you read this then to make you better.
