The Lancia LC2 is a Group C racing car that raced at LeMans from 1983 to 1986. Private teams also ran LC2's until 1991. It was more powerful than the Porsche 956 using a Ferrari engine. The car secured multiple pole positions over the years and earned 3 race victories.
In 1982 the new Group C regulations were introduced and Lancia immediately began work on a racing car. Each car had to maintain a fuel economy of 100KM for every 60 Litres of fuel. Their first attempt, the LC1 did not meet the regulations and they had to build the LC2 for the 1983 season. Ferrari provided a 3.0 V8, used in the Ferrari 308 GTBi in 1982. The engine was reduced to 2.6 litres and 2 KKK turbochargers were added.
In 1983 the Lancia got on pole during the 1000KM of Monza however it tyre problems knocked it out of the race. Engine and tyre problems plagued the LC2 for the entire season and Lancia quickly looked for a solution for the 1984 season.
In 1984 a revised LC2 getting a podium finish at the 1000KM of Monza. The car also got a podium during the Silverstone race and during the 24 Hours of LeMans 1984 they finished 8th. After Brands Hatch Lancia took a brief hiatus but returned for Imola but both cars crashed out. They missed the race at Fuji and returned at Kyalami and the LC2 got it's second win.
In 1985, the cars were further revised and ran on Michelin tyres. The car finished 4th at Mugello, and the race at Monza was halted due to a fallen tree on the track. At Silverstone the LC2 was leading until a wheel bearing failure in the closing laps forced the Lancia to retire. Reliability issues forced the LC2 to finish the 1985 LeMans race in 6th and 7th. A fuel pump failure also cost Lancia the race at Hockenheim. Lancia were leading the race at Spa until race organisers ended the race who was killed in an accident earlier in the race. At Brands Hatch both Lancia's collided and finished 3rd and 4th.
In 1986 only one Lancia LC2 participated as Lancia were losing faith that their car was competitive with all of it's reliability issues. At Monza the Lancia finished second. The car retired at Silverstone due to more problems and Lancia pulled the car from the championship to focus on the WRC.
