Gran Turismo 5 is an upcoming video game in the line of the Gran Turismo series. It is described as an "Online Car Life Simulator". Developed by Polyphony Digital, it is expected to be released for the PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2008, a North American date has not been announced. It looks set to continue the tradition of the series by offering yet more choices of cars and tracks, including the long sought after Ferrari brand, and even higher levels of realism than before if the released videos of gameplay are anything to go by.

:guilty: :nervous: :grumpy: this sucks!:ouch:

If this means that I have to buy cars online I will be perturbed.

Of course, being a Wiki post it could mean nothing.

I don't think it does, I think it means it's focusing on how the game will similute the "car life" culture online through the game, assuming this entry is true.

EDIT: It is true, in a way. It's described (GT5) here http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20061201/gthd.htm as a "Online car life simulator". Interestingly Gran Turismo 4 under the official Japanese Sony site is referenced as the "car life simulator".

The only thing that's definitely incorrect in this Wiki entry is the release date, which will have to be postponed about 4 or 5 times... in true traditional polyphony fashion

For some reason, I think your wrong, they've had a full four years to develope the game, and they probably have been working on it ever since GT4 came out. Who knows how long they had PS3 hardware?

According to Sony, first party developers started to recieve PS3 development kits around September 2005. Thoes were incomplete PS3 development kits at that, they didn't have the RSX graphics onboard at the time.

When they mean:

Online Car Life Simulator

Does this mean it will take over are life completely.

Well I may be a bit slow with the news but I was under the impression that the game would be released in 2007. If it's now 2008 in Japan with no confirmed worldwide release that tells me 2009 for Europe (past experience). I believe Xmas 2008 Japan and Spring 2009 Europe. And that's not taking into account any delays. Worst still is the fact that there may be no FF for my DFP:ouch:. I really hope they'll sort out their dispute with Immersion by then.

I'm not in a hurry to buy a PS3 and I'm not that desperate for GT5, and have absolutely no interest in GTHD at the moment. So whenever GT5 is released I'll check it out. If I like it and my DFP is supported I'll but console and game, if not I won't.:indiff:

I look at it this way, the longer GT5 takes the better chance the FF will be implemented and the cheaper it will be for me to buy a PS3. I might also actually have an HDTV by then and be able to fully enjoy it.

Good way to look at it. I don't have a HDTV either. Just like you said the FF might be implemented by then in GT5 and PS3 will be more stable (firmware and OS/software updates) and cheaper. Better still the HDTV techology will be more advanced, compatible, standardised and cheaper.👍

You're on the right track.

The thing is that PD seems to have waited since GT3 for a new console. Why else would they have spent all of those resources taking pictures and recording sounds, etc., a few years ago? They didn't/couldn't use them much on the PS2, so my opinion is still that Kaz held off until he was forced to pull the trigger on a second major PS2 release.

They could easily have spent their time planning for GT on a new console, but it's hard for us to tell what they did for a few years, except release one-brand demos.

Cheers,

MasterGT

According to PD, modeling takes an inordinate amount of time for GT5 cars. They could have been working on modeling the cars well before they got anything resembling a dev kit for the PS3. I still don't expect GT5 to be out any time soon. But there'll be plenty of games to feed my PS3 in the meantime. Not to mention GTHD. And hopefully they'll throw us some bones on that front as well.

According to PD, modeling takes an inordinate amount of time for GT5 cars.

It's not the modeling per se, but also incorporating the model into the game. Engine sounds, physics settings, etc, has to be tweaked for each car. That part takes signficantly longer than the actual modeling. A decent modeler could whip up the actual mesh in less than a week without too much trouble. Getting that model into the game, on the other hand.. that's what's taking a while.

Man oh man I would love to be a fly on the wall and see how these guys work the PS3 dev kits considering they would have been one of the first companys to recieve them.I bet what they have running now is significantly better than the GTHD Demo.

Ferrari is definitely a good start and long overdue.

As for the online worries, I think it's safe to say there will still exist a strong single player mode in GT5. The game will probably end up having Arcade and Simulation modes we are used to seeing, with "Online mode" simply added like GT HD, but larger and more complete.

Blu-ray can hold a lot of data as well, and with years of time to develop the game, hopefully nothing is rushed. I felt GT4 recycled a little too much, there's no reason the next evolution shouldn't have an entirely new look, sound and feel.

If there is a game that is going to make me get a PS3, it will most likely be GT5.

Not new but full artical of this snip.

"So, a complex online scheme and a huge quantity of HD-native content truly worthy of a PS3 Gran Turismo game. It's a Herculean task, one that leads to the most important question of the moment: Just how long will it be before Gran Turismo 5 is on store shelves? Considering each car in the TGS demo of GT HD took six months to model, and that GT 5 should have at least as many cars as Gran Turismo 4"

I hope as things go that the modelling of each car speeds up!

But consider the fact that they may have 400-500 people working on the cars, doing a car each. so if each car takes 6 months and 400 people are working on a car each, thats 400 cars done in 6 months, or even 2 people to 1 car, thats still 200 cars in 6 months. So in 4 years, 400 8 times is 5200 cars, so not gonna happen but you see my point?:P

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble but...:ouch: It looks even worse if you use those numbers now. And the fact that 90 of those employees are not all working on car models.

Outsourcing & Contracting

Besides, I think that quote "Considering each car in the TGS demo of GT HD took six months to model, and that GT 5 should have at least as many cars as Gran Turismo 4" needs a great deal of clarification to jump to any kind of conclusion that each car really does take that long. I suspect that estimate is not exactly precise, and may take in account a lot of preliminary design and programming work. I do not think it is hard to imagine that as they perfect their modeling procedures and methods, and as they add additional resources to their work force, including outsourcing and contracting, not only will they be able to work more efficiently, but they'll have/ do have a lot more resources available to them.

However, managing resources for such a large project must be extraordinarily challenging. I certainly wouldn't want to be managing a project like this.

Outsourcing & Contracting

Hummm....I don't take Kazunori Yamauchi as the kind of guy that would leave the modelling up to an outside source. He seems such the perfectionist that modeling must be done in house. I could see many of the other tasks being outsourced. Just my opinion though as I don't know that for sure.

That's 6 of one mans working months and it will be unoptomised time. PD have used time scales like that in the past, ultimtely each car is probably created in far less than 6 total months. You see, while the modeller is creating the car model, theres another guy perhaps modelling the interior, and another guy using an already created test model to create and tweak the physics ect. Most of the jobs are done simultaniously, in fact, only the textures would probably have to wait until the car model is complete. There will probably be 40-50 people working on the cars, they will each be working on seveal cars at any one time. So when they've done all they can at that point on one model, they move onto a different model. Time is optomised, whereas in PD's figure of 6 months, it will not be. I'd hazzard a guess that in 6 months, PD can probably complete between 100-150 cars.

Right...I would guess its like an assembly line. It would be resonable to set goals like having 3 to 4 cars done per week.

It also seems like we are lacking with any new information. Its been since early December that we have even had a new screen shot.:grumpy:

For as long as I have been gaming, I have learned to expect release dates to slip. It is part of the process, and I think there are few examples indeed of games that were released on the original expected date.

GT5 in 2008 means you have time to get all gold licenses, your next HDTV will go down in price, and if you don't already have a PS3, it will be more affordable by then as well.
