This thread is mainly for the discussion of braking techniques and the situations in which you use them, but as we have very few polls here (:P) I decided to add one.

My first two wheels had two pedals and as I didn't need my left foot for anything I started using that for braking.
Since my wife bought me a G27 with a Wheelstand Pro, I've been using my left foot for the clutch and my right foot for braking.
On most road cars, except the ones that come standard with flippers I use the H-shifter and clutch for shifting. On all time trials and missions I use the flippers too as the auto clutch is so incredibly fast.

When I got to the IA Mission Races, I found that in a lot of (high speed) corners I lost too much speed lifting the throttle and tapping the brake and that lifting the throttle alone would not give me the weight shift (i guess) to make the corner. So I found myself suddenly using my left foot again for braking.

I now use either my left or my right foot depending on the situation, although I stick to my right when using the H-shifter as I am not into heel-toe yet.

I would like to know what techniques other people have, especially if you use heel-toe as I have yet to figure out how to do that properly :)

Thanks!

Nice thread:
When I had my DFGT I always used my left foot I have to say. :D
But then I got my G27 and learned that I should use my right foot. With all the realism and use of the H-shifter I must say I now do it the right way. My left foot I use to opperate the clutch, my right foot for throttle and brakes.
To everyone: Try to always use your right foot for braking, after you are used to your left foot (wrong way) it is very hard to learn how to use your right foot properly. ;)
An old bad joke often made by Jeremy Clarckson:
The right way is the right way. :D

I use my left foot for braking, i only use the clutch and H-pattern shifter sometimes for extra fun when racing offline against the AI, because its slower.

Don't drive in the real world, so only know left foot braking... with two pedals it just makes sense.

I have to disagree on the 'wrong way' comment. Left foot braking is not 'wrong' it is just a different technique and can help you be faster in certain corners.

Somewhere in another thread I saw some telemetry data of Michael Schumacher, who apparently is a left foot braker. Was quite interesting to see. I'll try to find it later.

Jij ook!

I picked left and right but mostly I am a left foot only guy when racing. I will sometimes use the clutch and gated shifter, mostly in muscle cars for fun but for racing I prefer to use the paddles and left foot braking.

IRL I do both right and left braking depending on the car and the situation. Auto trans I always use left foot, manual trans almost always use right foot

I guess I must be one of a kind then according to the poll  . I have a DFGT (wanting to get a G27 on or shortly after Christmas) and I left and right foot brake. I typically use left foot braking only when driving cars like the X2014 series, FGT etc but for most other cars I will right foot brake.

Question for those who left foot brake only and have 3 pedals; how do you work the clutch and rev-match..?! It seems the next generation of humans need to have 3 feet 💡 .

I rarely drive with the clutch so it's left foot all the way with me and the G27. Heel and toe is fun sometimes but not the fastest way around the course. Fastest will always be left foot braking and the paddles for shifting.

Don't forget the late Colin McRae who was awesome with his left foot for brakes.

I always use the right foot.
I would like to use the left foot when driving karts and formula cars, but the brake pedal of the G25 is too close to the gas pedal, which makes it hard.
There should be a way to set the clutch pedal as brakes.

Simple: We usually don't because the clutch in GT is god-awful and is a real nuissance to use. In the vare rare case we do, well, of course we right foot brake so we can clutch in with the left foot and blip the throttle with part of the right foot 👍.

If I'm using the H Shifter I use my right foot for brake and left for clutch
if I'm using paddles I typically have one foot on brake and another on gas.

I have a DFGT so I only have two pedals and I always use my left foot. I actually have a really hard time using my right. That will have to change once I get my new wheel though.

G25 when not using the H-shifter I LFB, do some LFB when driving the families automatic car aswell.

I mostly use my right foot to brake, unless I'm "on-it" with the auto-clutch sequentials. I usually use the H-pattern and clutch on my G25.

There are several situations where I find left foot braking is useful, for example:
  • Getting the nose to "pin" to an apex you would otherwise miss without having to lift and lose more time
  • Brushing speed off in a high speed corner (e.g. the uphill right hander in the first half of a lap at GVS)
  • Modifying the effective brake balance and power distribution in FWD and 4WD cars (it's great fun with the Audi Quattro S1, having to switch between heel toeing and balancing the brakes against the throttle to manage slides)
  • Stabilising the rear end of a relatively open diff'd RWD car (which can also be done with the "heel" of the right foot braker)
  • Generally speeding up throttle-to-brake-to-throttle transitions.

I'll attempt to do any of those as I remember to!

Besides, who doesn't wish they could do this?

There's also scope for using the clutch for car control, by decoupling the engine braking in certain situations (probably low-grip), but that hurts my head.

Growing up I was always told to not use my left foot for braking always use the right foot. My first car was a manual [3 on the tree] so naturally I used the right foot for brake and throttle and left foot for the clutch. My first fast car was an automatic and it just seemed natural to use that left foot for the brakes and I discovered that I could drive faster and have better control using both the throttle and the brake at the same time in some cases which of course requires both feet.

I've never had any issues with the left foot braking in any game that had decent pedals. My club sports are stiff enough I can actually rest my foot on the pedal all the time without engaging the brake and I find that both comfortable and effective. If I use right foot for brakes and have ABS off I have to be a bit more careful as my right foot is more used to braking in my truck which requires a bit more foot than the game ;)

Well that is disappointing to hear considering that I want to get a H-shifter wheel complete with clutch :( . Come on Kaz, step up the clutch so that people will use it more often.

I have a T500, but don't have a shifter and do not use the clutch. I've left foot braked on GT ever since I bought a DFP to use with GT4.

On the road, I have an automatic car for my daily and a manual for my weekend/pleasure car. I always brake with my right foot on the road.

I also have some RL track experience, and again, only brake with my right foot. There are probably a few situations in which left foot braking would work, but I've never tried it.

I left foot brake on the game because it's faster, and because some throttle/brake overlap can be an advantage in tricky MR cars.

DFGT. I've left foot braked from day one of owning the wheel. It feels totally natural even though every real car I've ever driver, I've right foot braked.

Then again, I've used the buttons behind the wheel to change gear since day one as well, again that feels natural to me even though every real car I've driven is a manual.

I use a DFGT and I use my left foot to brake. It's how I've been racing and I'm used to it now. Just gotta remember to take GT6 mode off when I go outside and drive my real car.

I've gone from being able to left-foot brake only to being able to use both my right and left foot for braking. At the moment I use right foot when using my shifter and left foot when not.

So you've never used the shifter that's on the right side of the wheel?

Am I the only one who can't transfer sim-racing skills to a real car and vice-versa? The two environments feel vastly different to me, and I find I'd have to re-learn everything, which is all muscle memory (so I keep things conventional / safe in the real world...)

It could well be in my head, I'd concede.

Making changes to the clutch in the game will not fix the real issue.

What needs to change is to make the gear selection checks (throttle position, mainly - also 1st-2nd timer and wheel spin) be optional.
It's especially annoying that if you blip the throttle whilst trying to select a lower gear (for heel-toe down-shifts), the game will disallow that selection (because you attempted to select the gear with more than 20% throttle applied), leaving you in neutral.

If we want it fixed, it's time to start complaining about the right thing. 👍

I always use my right foot to brake. I use a clutch with my fanatec csw wheel. I also noticed that after I went to using my right foot for braking my lap times were much better.
