There are free solutions, but all of them directly swap out resource files, which has two disadvantages: 1) Bloody dangerous, and 2) Because you're merely swapping out images, you have to keep the sizes the same.

ShapeShifter basically tells an application while it's launching to "get your resources from here instead of there", thus leaving the real resource files untouched, making it crash- and problem-proof. You wouldn't believe how risky themeing was before SS came out.

Also, SS allows themeing capabilities that a resource swapper can't provide. For example, text colors are normally hard-coded into OS X apps, so there's no resource "file" per se to swap out. But SS can basically tell the app to use something else.

Nothing is free with a Mac.

Spare me. It's starting to get really annoying.

EDIT II: The horizontal black bars are added on purpose, to make the picture look more panoramic and to allow room for the icons on top (I don't like having icons ON TOP of the picture) and room for the taskbar on bottom (I set it up to automatically hide whenever it's not used)

Actually, they're just foglamp/turn signal pods, but yeah, very cool. I always loved the Mazdaspeed front end.
