Liam's NA Miata - Finally back on the road!!!

Hmmm okay.

Also, does your Miata make a ticking noise from the engine? Mine does, usually when its cold. Also during hard cornering I hear a rattle, pretty sure it's coming from the engine. Do you experience any of this?

What weight oil are you using?

Only if I get lazy with oil changes. It goes away with new oil. FYI, I actually use an S2000 oil filter as it has more capacity on my 1.8 cars. Oddly enough the Wix catalog lists a smaller filter for 96-97 than a 94-95. Not sure about 1.6s.

I always used the an OEM quality filter (purchased from FM, since I worked there) on my 1.6 turbo and never had an issue. The car had the normal Miata "tapping" for a couple seconds on startup when cold while the oil pressure stabilized, never showed itself any other time.

Change the oil and filter, it's possible you're using the wrong weight oil which can cause oil pressure issues which would likely highlight the rattle mx5s are known for when there's no oil pressure. if you're also getting it during "hard" cornering it's possible there's not enough oil resulting in it getting washed away from the pick up.

Better to be safe than sorry and it doesn't exactly cost much

Thanks, I will be doing that tomorrow. My oil pressure is low too.

I'd start by replacing the sender, the gauge very rarely goes bad.
Yeah, I was hoping by saying that he would trace it and hopefully find the root of the problem. Good place to start.

Oil pressure could very well be low...I'm not 100% sure what they run at but given it's a 4 pot I'd say around 25-30 psi warm off the top of my head.

Here's a photo of the sender: (the grey thing)

And the gauge: (top center - where this needle is pointing is where it should be)

What do I look for when I check the sender? I also lost oil due to the leak I had, which is fixed with the new valve cover. 👍

Here are the normal oil pressure numbers:

Oil pressure @ 1000 rpm = 28 - 43 psi; @ 3000 rpm = 43 - 57 psi

As far as the sender goes, pull the connector off it and make sure there's no corrosion on it or the connection.

Make sure there is a solid connection. Otherwise it seems to be one of those parts you just take off and replace. Not sure though, never had one.

Thanks guys. @R1600Turbo My Oil gauge is 2-4-6-8, sooooo, can't understand with the numbers your giving me.

I will be changing the oil tomorrow so I will take a look at the sender then.

Yeah, it's metric. Tried a conversion and it didn't seem correct. But, lines are in the same spot regardless so just use the photo I posted and the numbers I gave you to get an idea of where the needle should be.

Seafoam it first, then change the oil. And you still don't know if it's actually low pressure or the sender. My money is on the sender.

Given the symptoms I would have to differ - it sounds very much like low pressure to me.

I have been leaking oil, until I changed my valve cover gasket, I have never topped it up. Does low oil pressure mean low oil as well?

Theres your problem. You just saved some money. Go get a quart of oil and pull the dipstick and fill it until its full.

Do a full oil change. With Ks as high as yours more frequent changes are beneficial for cleaning out your motor, you'll find even though your oil was apparently freshly changed it will be black or at least discoloured already.

Not to mention you have no clue if the previous owner was even using the correct weight oil - do it properly 👍
