I read this in the Metro this morning. Looks really freaky but it's obviously a weirdly shaped rock.

Conspiracy theorists will be going nuts over this!

I've looked at this before but I just can't see it! Can someone put a red arrow on it or circle it or something!

It's the bit of rock on the middle left hand side that looks a bit like this:

I just saw it on anothe forum, that's the shadow of a jutting rock. I won't even both going into the whole atmospheric problems with it.

I wish the Mars rover had a little chisel attachment and could send the rock back to earth.

Yep, if you look closely, you can see that there is indeed life on Mars.

Even though I am a firm believer that there was life on Mars at one point in time I do not believe there is any there now, and if there is, it is nothing more then microbes. With that said it looks like a rock to me, shadows do some crazy things...sort of like the Mars face.

If you look hard enough at something, you can see whatever you want. You just have to want to see it.

Convincing others is another matter altogether.

It's a rock. A big stinkin rock. Duh.

Sometimes my poop looks like a snake but I don't take pictures and call it one.

Forgive me if my sense of perception is off but looking at the scale of the rocks that "thing" would be less then a foot tall?! Considering the size of the rover which would only be a few feet tall with the camera position, I'd say all of those rocks are much smaller then you think they are. Yes or no?

Golf clap for you daan.

I argue that those rocks you see are the size of buildings. Thus, making your football sized rock roughly the size of an automobile. Yes or no?

You seem so sure, so can you prove that it's a rock?

I can not prove that it is a rock. I can't prove it because my desktop computer doesn't have the appropriate software to make a factual statement on it being or not being a rock.

I stick with my claim that it is indeed a rock.

Those rocks probably are fairly small. But whose to say that life on Mars can't be small?

What I do find interesting within this photo is the red, brick-shaped rock on the right side, directly across from the "form" being debated. The red rock, with its angular edges, suggest it could have been formed from some type of violent activity. This is unlike all the other rocks in the photo which appear to be smooth, as if from wind or sand erosion. It almost looks as if someone has tossed a red brick onto the sand before taking the picture. I'm sure the pic is authentic, but why such a drastically different rock formation? Hmmm .....

That is a little strange. Its the only rock in the picture that has a shape as distinct as itself.

What about the person in the foreground who fell and has been covered by volcanic ash?

While we're being serious, it's likely that it's just the shape of the color that's distinctive. Where the rock ends and begins isn't entirely clear.

Looks like someone dropped an action figure.

What atmospheric problems? Are you assuming that all life must use Earth-like atmosphere? Next you will say that creatures cannot breathe underwater.

Such an atmospherist attitude.

I'm just joking, but to assume that life must have conditions like ours is assuming a lot considering how little of the universe we can examine closely.

Now, if you said life, as we know it, then it is a totally different story.

I often wonder if our very close-minded views won't cause us to actually miss intelligent life when we do see it.

Quoted for Truth.

and that red brick looking thing is a Martian Lego .

No, if that close up rock was the size of a car then the camera would have to be 20 feet off the ground to capture that angle. I just don't remember the rover having that capability.

There are plenty of rocks that large but just not in this picture IMO.

Midget men from Mars? Haven't I seen that movie?

I don't know, Danoff. The other formations appear to be very smooth with distinct erosion patterns. Not only is the brick colored differently, but it definitely appears to be very different in shape relative to the appearance of all the other rocks.

As for the guy who fell down and is now covered in sand - the cause of death was most likely that darn red brick, thrown by some Martian onto the back of the poor victim's head. :D
