Got an idea here and I'm not sure what the response would be to it. Since we already have quite a selection of competitions to choose from I'm not real sure how this will fly with all youz guyz.

What I'm thinking about is a full blown no holds barred PS competition where the object is to create ART. Not so much a theme based competiton, just an "idea" and go from there.

For example. One of the competitions may be something like take any car to a photo travel location and turn it into a "piece of art" that you might see a professional artist do. It could look like an airbrushing, a pencil sketch, an oil/water color painting, etc. Not inserting anything else, just using the photo taken in GT4. No set style. If an "artist" wants to submit an "airbrushing" and another a "water color" they would still be in the same poll. Just so it doesn't look much like a photo any more but a viewer can still tell that it's a car/scene from GT4.

Instead of a Top (insert number here) just have all the entries sent in to an anonymous poll (like the Rally Competitions) and have maybe ten or so competitions. After that have one final poll with all the winners to select the "Top Artist" or "Best Art". I know that creating entries for something like this would be time consuming so maybe make it so that the entry time is two weeks or so with the polls running for a week or so. Maybe also have a poll for what the "idea" for the next competition would be instead of a winner setting it.

Like I said before, I know we already have LOTS of competitions but outside of the Photomode/Photoshop competition there's not really a place for the "artist" to let loose with his/her artistic PS skills. And the Photomode/Photoshop competition does have it's limits by setting a theme for each competition. But, if this idea is too much like what the basis is for the Photomode/Photoshop competition then please let me know and disregard this post.

I'm not sure if anything like this has ever been mentioned or done before and not even sure if this is an idea worth going any further with or not. Just thought I'd mention it and see what the users here thought about it.

Note to a Moderator: If there is already something like this out there and I've totally missed it in my search, please remove this post.

Cool idea. I like to experiment with that kind of stuff on some of my pics. I don't know how well it will work as a competition though, because it takes a few seconds to do in a photoshop program.

That's what I was thinking too. You just need to tell Gimp (in my case) to turn a photo into an oil painting or whatever and that's it. Maybe it would be a good idea to have no limits to editing to give more room to creativity. But I like the basic idea.

Well it would be nice if limited filters would be used, like only Blur' and sharpening only as all of the other filters and plugins are too whack and cheesy. and anyone with a small bit of knowlage can tell when a filter has been used to gane an effect. but im in favour of this comp as long as it rewards those who put the effort in to the images and not some filter pimp, that thinks sticking chrome in and then a bit of texture, and last but not least the obligatory lens flare.

I guess I didn't word it right. I meant to use PS (or whatever) to it's fullest to create an artistic rendering (for lack of a better word) not just use the "effects" options within the software to create the desired effect. I'm not versed enough with PS to know all the "options" available that could be used but what I meant was more than just choose one of the "effects" options. Anybody could do that. I just used those as examples. Like I said, maybe I'm not using the right words to explain what I mean. 440 Charger or Easy$$ if you could help out here with the correct verbage it might help.

No limits to edit...YES. adding or taking away from the picture...NO. By that I mean, not "cutting out" the car and adding it to a different background and no adding anything to the background. No altering of the car (except color).

I guess I should first ask if there is a way to do what I mean before hand.

OK, now for the comedy part....
I know this is VERY bad but this is kinda what I'm talking about (I did this REALLY bad image in about 15 minutes)

Original

Artistic: (I know I'm not good at this at all)

About 15 minutes of IrfanView and MS Paint. Nothing taken away from background (just the same pattern copied over and over) and the car unaltered. This might be a bad example but I hope I'm explaining this right. :indiff:

I think its a good idea just to see what people can turn them into artistic wise. In college I had to design a poster for a play and had to turn pictures of a girl into a sketches. Their are so many ways to be artistic just by putting a simple filter of blur, oil painting, embossed, ect. I say people should get together some examples of what they can do and if we get enough people that can make them "artistic" turn it into a comp. Just my thoughts.

Perhaps you could use watercolor/pencil sketch/oil painting/surreal/etc.. as themes themselves. So everyone would use the same basic "artistic" filter, in their own way, and then make whatever other adjusments and modifications they want. I dont think it should be annonymous for this sort of thing though. I think everyone would want feedback before the poll goes up.

Maybe this would be a better example of what I'm getting at. This started as a photo of a dragon fly and this is what the guy made from that:

Maybe a better definition of this would be "Digital Art". I just used the terms water color, pencil sketch, etc. because I couldn't think of how else to word my ideas.

yeh that would be a good thing to do.

its a good idea, im up for it, i have the perfect weapon too, a Wacom Tablet :)

Here is just a quick example of turning it "artistic" really simple in photoshop, only took about 10 mins.

Isn't the whole forum for here called "GT4 Photo and Video Galleries" and then there's a forum within that with "GT4 Photo Mode competitions". That's nothing related to GT4 imo.

I am so interested in this
this will be fun for most photoshop enthusiasts here
way to go Swissbear

He's not suggesting we take pictures of bugs. He's suggesting we turn GT4 photos into artwork.
Or did you understand that already, and you're just trying to raise your post count, with random nonsense?

I saw some GT4 picture that someone edited a long time ago that was crazy. I think it was a skyline or something with a body kit, maybe a drift car, I don't remember, but it had a fancy red background, square columns popping out, 3D style, it had tire smoke painted in that was wavy and looked like a ghost or something. It was on Trial Mountain, I think, maybe Deep Forest, I always get those two confused. This picture would be a perfect example, though I don't remember where I saw it and have no idea how they did that much to the pic. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Anyway, this competition sounds really cool and complex. I think you'd probably need a lot of textures and stuff to get really weird color effects and shapes. I think the two examples up there^ are too simple. It'd be neat to turn a picture into a Picasso or something. Someone should try that, I'm not good enough at all. Good Idea, though, Swissbear.

Sounds like all you need to do is work out the rules, and start it up. Maybe you could have a trial week, to get a feel for it, and then go to week 1.

well if this comp goes up this is the kind of thing i will be entering, is this what you were looking for ?

Took the original image made a new layer and painted using custom brushes, following the image, and using it for colours, then just tweaked the overall colour.

Great idea!

I'll gladly give it a try.

Edit: to make this picture, I added all sorts of artistic effects, and then used clone tool to put the normal car in the same spot.

Well, since this seems to be a welcomed event, I'll set something up and have it posted next week about mid-week or so. I've currently got some internet problems at home and they can't fix them until next Tuesday. I'll have the details worked out by then and post a trial run of this and see what happens from there.

Thanks for all the input guys. I hope that what I come up with will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Have a great weekend.

I like this idea swissbear, it sounds like it could be quite fun. hopefully my pc will be back in action by the time it starts too :)
