Warning: Very long post

If you dont know what is GT500, LeMans, DTM.. or have some doubts or curiosities about it, heres the right place. This list have explaining about it and have the list of the cars that are on these categories and on GT5. It also does tell the difference between real cars and Polyphony fantasy cars. (*)
*Sorry about any english mistakes. The original list of categories was published in Brazilian Portuguese. This is a manual translation.

Part of the content give a concept, an explanation, about some of the words we use most of times, without knowing the meaning. Theres also some comments about what is a shuffled, balanced category in real world.

The list of categories carries 53 categories, divided in two parts: Real and Fiction. Every category has a description made to introduce it for you. Below of the most real cars has a link showing what website provides the information about it. You can try yourself search at the website more stuff about the car and the category by clicking the link.

For those who wants organize/host events with these categories, its very highly recommended to do a flatness (balance the category) first (be a category doesnt mean have balanced cars, not in Gran Turismo). More details about the flatness is at the attachment about it. At an attachment we have a link to the topic that have some balanced fiction and real categories for GT5 and more details about the flatness (link at gtplanet).

=> The 3 "kinds" of cars

The three types of cars are: Street Cars (road), Tuning Cars (tuner) and Race Cars (racer). The reason of the existence of the road car is to be sold in large scale, ready for consumption. They are ready to satisfy costumers, with high comfort, security and economy (we have some exceptions of course). Tuning cars are modified road cars for a different reason, like racing and drifting. And Race Cars are made for racing competitions.

Every car has a base. At the race car´s manufacture, they dont do a road car and then modify for race. The car is directly made, sometimes with the base of the road cars sometimes not. That´s the main goal about the difference between a Race Car and a Tuning Car. The Tuning Car is not directly made. The Tuning Car used to be a road car. RMs should be Tuning Cars, but most of them acts like the road car never existed.

=> The Concept of Categories
Basically, category is a group of cars that have some characteristics in common. Category doesnt mean group of cars made to race together, however at main cases thats the point.

Talking about the categories made for together racing, category means a group of cars that obey to a specific regulation (group of rules and specifications) that are made for making the race close and balanced. In GT5, this only applies to cars that raced together at real world (minority, or better: rarity). For others cars, category means only a group of cars that raced in a group of championships in a group of years. For trying to make it clearly, an example: GT500. Lets put together two cars: Yellow Hat Supra 2005 and Calsconic Impul GTR 2008. In categories concept for real life, they dont belong to the same category, because they didnt race at the same regulation (rules for Super GT 2005 are different from rules for Super GT 2008). At the concept of categories in game, they belong to the same category, because both of them belong to the Super GT championship.

From there rises a theory that explains the non equality of most of GT5 cars (not all of them are not balanced): Raced at different regulations. A regulation is made for shuffle the category, but different regulations are not made for equalize themselves.

=> The concept of Touring Cars

Touring cars are race cars based on comfort street cars. The comfort street cars are made for easy drive and to be comfortable for long distance travel. Touring cars also are trustable.

They are equipped for racing. At some Touring Cars Championship rules, the use of sophisticated technology is prohibited. The reason ? To not make the Touring Cars too much expensive. One of the main points here is to keep the some base car characteristics, specially the comfort and the design.

=> The concept of GT (Gran Turismo or Grand Tourer)

Grand Toures are race car with the body shape based on road cars. Part of the advantage characteristics are also imported. The main difference for Touring Cars is that these cars have to be a bit more different from the base cars, discarding the comfort and non advatange aspects (however, some categories and regulations rule that the GT car has to be alike the base road car). Another difference is that these cars aren´t based on comfort cars, they can have Super Sports Car on base (like Ferraris and Lamborghinis).

=> The Concept of Prototype

Prototype is a car designed for a special desire: Race. No base road cars. They usually have special aerodynamics, lower gravity center and less weight. They are popularly called LeMans, however not all Prototype is a LeMans car nor all LeMans car is a prototype. They also have some sophisticated technologies. Most of these technologies are used on the future on road cars, when they get cheaper (thats why the name is "prototype"). For example, a Formula 1 car is a prototype, even if has some singular specs, like open wheels.

=> The Concept of Stock Car

Stock, as the name says, are cars that are stocks, with no modifications. At it first moments, stock car was created for road car racing with no tuning. However, today stock car are category cars that have the same engines, brakes, body shape, suspension, etc. The variations are at minimal adjustments, like the car height, but these small changes can do big differences.

Part I - Real Series

The most interesting part of the list has real cars from real categories that are inside the game, like Formula 1, Super GT, LeMans and many others. It starts from the most popular ones to the most unknown.

1 - Well-known categories

Most people at GT5 already know these categories, that are widespread at all players from world and some of them are included as a category in game (like GT500), at the options.

This part of the list is quoted from this list (very few modifications):
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=159182

1.1 - SUPER GT E JGTC

Super GT and JGTC are categories from the Japan Tourism Championship. The real championship happens one time per year, and have some interesting rules (like put ballast for winners) that are not performed on GT5.

Its very common confuse JGTC and Super GT. The game does this confusion, else PD knows about what is right. Super GT has the new cars (2005 upper) of GT500 and GT300. JGTC has the old cars, 2004 below. GT500 are cars with 500 hp and 1.100 pounds for Super GT and 1.150 pounds for JGTC. GT300 are cars with 300 hp and variable weight. So, when someone says that will do a Championship using Super GT GT500, means that will do a championship with cars with year 2005 upper, with the general specifications of Super GT for GT500. When someone says that are going to do a JGTC Championship, he has to say if it is GT500 or GT300. Or better: Should say. In practice, the mistakes are made, by someone's ignorance or by the interest of marketing or by other reasons.

In game, GT500 is JGTC GT500+Super GT GT500. The same happens to GT300. Notice that the category is made for weight and horsepower restrictions, not PP. PP would disturb it balance.

1.2 - DTM

Putted in game as "Touring/Tourism cars", the DTM Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) is, like the name says, a competition for German touring cars ( its evolution made it accept non German cars too, but to simplify we say that are only German cars like it used to be). For those who Super GT is very familiar, DTM would be the German Super GT. GT5 miss dozens of cars here (as it does in many others real categories).

1.3 - Nascar

Nascar is the United States Stock Car. They are heavy cars, with high horsepower, that most of times races on ovals circuits (in GT5, Daytona, Indy and Special Stage Route X only), that are very look alike each other but for our surprise they are different and requires some skills. The category is also well known because of the accidents, because the cars race too close. Thanks to DrifterJoe for making this list.

2 - Less-known categories

Less fashioned categories that are not listed in game, they are less known. Most of times they are very incomplete.

2.1) LeMans

LeMans, the most known from unknowns, is a singular category. These cars have, at most of times, heavy rear and rear engine. Because of that they require skills from the driver. They also have extra aerodynamics. They are popularly called prototypes, but not all of them are prototypes

LMP1 and LMGTP are categories for brand new fast cars. They are lightweight and have many HP. The original category has complex rules.

Group C is a old version from LMP1 and LMGTP, with cars from 1987 to 1992. Less technology dont make them worse.

LMGT is a category that actually, is many categories. It started on 1980. They used to be very alike Nascar (old name: IMSA GT). But today they are Gran Tourer cars, but with the LeMans kind: Rear engines and some extra rear pounds. And extra aerodynamics.

The LeMans category is more diffused than it looks to be. It have many national versions, like ALMS (American LeMans Series). The national versions are not the same as the international ones, but they are very look alike.

2.2 - FIA GT/WTCC

Different from most people thinking, FIA is not responsible only for GT1, GT2, etc. Actually, FIA is a institution with massive contributions, and organize many others championships like Formula 1, LeMans, Rally, etc. FIA GT is the Grand Tourer that is neither German nor Japanese nor LeMans. Its the international Gran Tourer Championship.

FIA WTCC are the international Touring Cars, that also have national versions like BTCC. In Super GT language, they are the international GT300.

2.7 - Nurburgring 24 hours

The 24 hours of Nurburgring happens every year, and its an event based on 24 hours of LeMans. Like LeMans, it has categories inside, but the difference between the cars are not that far big, so I divided all 24h Nurburgring categories in two parts.

Its an welcoming event. It receives cars from international FIA events and Touring Cars. At starts, it had DTM (not listed because the DTM 24 h of Nurburgring categoriy had only DTM cars).

5) Road Cars

Road car categories like these doesnt exist. Competitions between Ferraris and Mercedes are truly street racing... But its good to dream them on tracks. In olds GTs, PD had divided for these cars and race cars. The classes were A,B,C and S. In GT5, they abandoned this division and they made some road and street category, like the german league (an offline A Spec event) and Super Sport Cars. Prototypes and Special Road Cars are only for listing the famous "Concepts and Prototypes road cars", not for category purpose.

5.3) Concepts, Prototypes and race-car-based road cars

Concepts are models, outlines, for future cars, with some extra aerodynamic that exist to study the vehicle dynamics. race-car-based road cars is when the Race Car come first (and in some case when the tuning car is distuned) , and then is created a road version based on it, with a better price. At this list I didnt put the Race Car concepts.

1) Wikipedia says that the BMW Mclaren F1 GTR Race Car has all the specs to be a JGTC Car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_GT

2) The Lexus IS F Racing Concept 08 obey most of the brazillian Stock Car specifications.

3) Amuse S2000 GT1 is not a FIA GT1 car.

4) WRC 2008 and LeMans Group C (I cant confirm Group C) are categories with cars that raced together at the same regulations, they are the best balanced car from game by the concept of Categories.

If you want a little more on NASCAR courses in the game, you could mention the 3 exhibition races held in Japan from 1996-1998. 1996 and 1997 were at Suzuka East, and the 1998 race was at the Twin Ring Motegi Oval (possibly coming to GT5 soon as DLC along with the road course and it's variations, as it has been leaked as being used in round 8 of GT Academy).

You also don't have the Jaguar XJ13 Race Car '66 (which also has a chromeline version) listed under Historic Le Mans (or anywhere else in the post), though I am aware the car was never actually raced.

Other than those, it's a very useful post that's had a lot of work put into it. 👍 Must have taken you a long time to do.

Thanks for the Nascar list =]. Yes, I really missed the Jaguar XJ13, Ill try to find a link to it later. Do you have a link to it?

Yes it took but it was a pleasure. My first list wasnt this, it was a brazillian version and its very cool see it grow and come big and more complete, like this one.

I don't quite see the logic of your fictional Touring and Tuner classes. What determines what gets into which group? Otherwise it's a pretty good job, though I have seen other threads of this like before. Not as detailed as this though...

Well done and thanks very much for doing this. Your sheer effort has paid off and you've produced something helpful for everyone.

Just a couple of cars in the Super Sport Cars category that shouldn't be in there (I don't think so, anyway).

The ones in bold shouldn't be there because I don't think they're fast enough to be there (that goes for the Z06 Corvette and the 4.2 R8). They're very fast for sports cars, but they're nothing more than that nonetheless. As for the Cobra, this isn't really a super sports car, more a sort of classic sports car. It is very basic, only does 155mph and corners like a slightly insane muscle car, so theefore shouldn't be with the exotics.

The ones that are underlined are actually concept cars. The Nuvolari was never put into production, and the GT didn't go into production until 2004, when it had 550bhp rather than the 500 on the '02 model.

Oh, and it's a Viper SRT10 ACR, not an STR10. But now I'm just being a picky sod.

Other than these minuscule faults, this is brilliant. No, really. Thanks again.

I don't understand how the FTO Super Touring is supposed to be an equivalent of the GT300 car. The Super Touring is an AWD, turbocharged V6 with old-DTM-esque design, and the Taevon Trampion FTO was a FWD car with I believe a 4G63 from a Lancer Evolution that looks far closer to the old FTO LM from the first three GT games than the car in GT4 and GT5. You also have the Calsonic Skyline listed as a GT300 car, the old DTM cars mixed in with the modern DTM cars, Audi R8 LMS listed as a GT2 car... it goes on quite a bit. And, honestly, as C-ZETA implied above once you get into the fiction section on your list everything becomes incredibly arbitrary.

I'm sorry to say this, because it's clear you put a lot of time in this, but a pretty sizeable percentage of even the real cars that you have classified are done so incorrectly, and all told the list is generally fairly misleading in the facts it presents.

Yep, that's another one. FTO STC is nowhere near close to what GT300s should be, and those other inaccuracies seem quite bad too.

Thx guys! Its impressive this list is still changing! List will be updated tomorrow. By the comments, it looks like I need some hand at the fiction categories.

I don't quite see the logic of your fictional Touring and Tuner classes. What determines what gets into which group? Otherwise it's a pretty good job, though I have seen other threads of this like before. Not as detailed as this though...

Fictional TCs are divided by the TC450, TC300, TC200. In Super GT, 500 hp cars are GT500, 300 hp cars GT300. In Fantasy TC, I did divided into TC450, TC300, TC200. Note that TC200 doesnt have exactly 200 hp, like not all cars of GT500 has the same HP and all of them is not exactly 500 hp. And they dont have the same weight like Super GT. This division is better than the old one that only list many different TCs in the same category like putting a 430 hp FTO Super Touring Car with the 193 hp CRZ TC.

The groups of the fantasy categories, most of them are divided into aerodynamics. For example, Group 1 of Tuning Cars are cars with maximum aerodynamics of 20 50 (not sure, but all of them has the same aerodynamics.

For Tuner, well, in the old list was a copy of the A spec event of tuning cars. However, I did expand the list. The tuning car concept was one of the most confusing concepts. My points to take more cars were to find in the name - Nissan 370Z Tuned Car for example - or find by manufacturers that only does tuning like Opera Perfomance. The Lancer one for example is on online b spec mode. I know this is not the best division, but I dont have any ideia what would be better than this division for tuning cars.

Thx!
The SuperCar (or Super Sport Car) category is based on an A Spec event called in portuguese "Super Carros" what in English should be Super Cars. The original list of this event is small. However, I did put a logic when I did expand the list: A Super Car is a non concept road car that haves the same PP as Cizeta 94 or better. Cizeta was the 2nd worst car on the A Spec event list No age restriction. However, looking better at the list, the oldest car except Cobra is Jaguar XJ220 1992, comparing to others Cobra is really old. Tomorrow Ill update the list and think about it.
About the concepts, Audi Nuvolari quattro and ford gt, Ive did the list of concepts using the official list of cars, at the "extra part" of the list. I looked for PD marked ones, with "concept" or "prototype" inside the name (ex: S Honda NSX-R Prototype LM Road Car). But Im going to change and put audi and ford gt 02 at the places that they should be. Nuvolari actually looks like a concept. Im gonna also put Tomykaira ZZ II as concept because it doesnt have a year. When a car doesnt have a year at its name it means that its a fantasy car (a fantasy car can be a concept car). GT By Citroen Race Car is an example. But tomorrow ^^! Got sleep soon.

Ive put FTO on first update when I saw that image, however to tell you the truth it was a mistake. Im going to update the list tomorrow and FTO will be out. About the Calsconic, well, when you said that and Ive looked at it at the list I said to myself: "WTF". The list was quoted but Im going to modify it too. lol.
About the DTM class, I putted the old and the new together on purpose. The DTM class is incomplete. The list called DTM as the complete one. DTM year 90 was just an emphasis. About the R8, the link is official from a europe version of FIA GT and says that it is GT2.
The first list was smaller than the old one I did for brazillian websites. The fiction area is new, and I didnt got what you mean about saying that it is arbitrary. The groups division where for aerodynamics balance. You can use all the groups if you want an event using a category with cars that have a different aerodynamics Some of categories, like german league, USAF, CGT, MTC and others were taken from PD A Spec events, you can look for them on A Spec offline modes.

EDIT: List updated.
