Howdy all,

I have a logitech g25 that has fallen victim to a teething puppy. All he got was the USB cable, other than that it's untouched.

It seems ridiculous that the entire set up is wasted because of one smurfing wire, but right now that seems to be the case.

Am I sol or can it be soldered or fixed in some other way?

Thanks

You could try soldering it, but you need a good soldering iron to do so. Also I would feel for soldering a complete new USB cable on it rather then soldering the tiny wires together again. This because the tin will touch and you will and up with more troubles then you'd want, in other words a short circuit.
Another thing you could try is getting a new USB male plug and soldering that on the wire, making it a bit shorter. And if needed use an USB extension cable.

I'm with LogiForce on this, soldering on a complete new cable is the best solution. I do a lot of electronic work and wouldn't find it a problem at all. If you are not good at soldering, or have the proper tools, take it to someone who can solder it for you.

So the fact that the cable connects directly to the underside of the wheel housing won't be a problem? Is there any kind of online write up on how to do it? I've not very skilled with a soldering iron so I'd most likely have to take it somewhere. Best buy geek squad said I was SOL as well as a couple other places in town.

They just are too chicken to solder directly onto the PCB. But yeah, you need to open it and make a picture of where the USB cable attaches so you know where every color goes.

But if you are not good with a soldering iron or don't have one for electronics, you could fry the PCB.
To be honest if you don't know anyone handy with the skill then it's a dead end.
Next time be more careful with your pets being around electronics at least. :(

I had to replace my usb on my DFGT. All I did was order a 15ft extension cable and cut off the end I didnt need, open up wheel and disconnect wire harness from board, leave abour 1-2 in of original cable conneted to harness, splice new cable wires to old wires connected to harness, re- connect to board and you should be good to go.👍 good luck!!

You guys are acting like soldering is brain surgery...

I picked up a soldering iron when I was 15 and was throwing down some sufficient albeit sloppy solders

Its not hard at all. Blob of metal, make sure both ends of the wire are going into it

(As a beginner I recommend you solder 2 wires together rather than trying to resolder wires onto a board. you couldn't possibly mess up soldering wires together. Just stagger your wires so you dont have a huge chunk of metal all at one point, also, electric tape the hell out of it, and lastly, ALWAYS remember to unplug your iron)

I have an electronics soldering iron and solder and am located in Texas. It's a big State but I am located just North of Dallas and would help you out if you want.

Thanks for all the tips guys. The reason I was concerned about soldering this is that it's a USB cable, not just an electrical cable. I've soldered simple circuits before, but never anything that was supposed to transmit that much data. I don't know if that actually makes any difference, but safest to assume it does I suppose, right?

My roomate and I are going to try and crack it open this week if we can get ahold of a soldering iron.

G25 is still out of commission. I found one shop in town that said they would give it a shot, but unfortunately I don't have all of the wire. The puppy that chewed through the wire consumed the male end, so they're saying they could solder a new wire on, but wouldn't know which lead was supposed to be soldered to which ever point.

Is there anywhere online that has a wiring diagram? This is seriously frustrating. I haven't played GT since the wheel went down.

Google something like 'USB pinout', also the wires are colour coded to make things like this easier. I believe the order is red, white, green, black and the shield around the inner wires connects to the main chassis of the plug, which is important, by the way. As for which pin is red, you'll find out with some Google (I'm eating my breakfast right now and I'm about to head off to college (where I'm studying electronics, incidentally) so I can't do it for you), but I think if you hold the USB plug pointing toward you with the plastic bit with the pins on it at the bottom, pin 1 (red) is on the left.

If you want to make ABSOLUTELY sure, get a USB cable you no longer need, cut the end that isn't the plug off and use the continuity setting on a meter to check which pin each colour goes to, then copy that. The pin order and colour coding is part of the USB standard so I can promise you it'll always be the same unless you're using some dodgy Chinese eBay knock-off USB cables or something.

Honestly I'm not sure why the shops your going to can't do this? Any gaming shop that does repairs should be able to do this. Also, my old man does a lot of electrical work (he does fuel systems for people tuning cars) and i know for a fact he could do something like this in no time. If you don't think you can do it yourself id look into places that deal in that area as opposed to putting computers together.

There are only 4 wires in standard usb. black white green and red. as has been said they should be standard. Pin outs can be found on google. i have an old g25 in bits. you need any more help pm me and ill take some pics and mail em to you. all is not lost. if you just want it working and dont care if its a bit rough you could even use a screwed connector block till you get a better fix.
