I have 1 question, isn't the plastic part attached to the original boot? How did you remove it?I just used scissors to cut some length off the bottom of the boot. No special tools needed. I haven't had any issues with the stitches coming loose.
I removed it it with my hands. I just pulled it out.I have 1 question, isn't the plastic part attached to the original boot? How did you remove it?
Oh ok, I am about to buy a second hand g25 shifter, the knob and the leather is in mediocre condition but I have no problem fixing that. So the plastic part comes off without much effort, right? Also what tool did you use to cut holes on the boot?I removed it it with my hands. I just pulled it out.
I used a hole tongs but I think you can use a nail and a hammer to punch holes in it.Oh ok, I am about to buy a second hand g25 shifter, the knob and the leather is in mediocre condition but I have no problem fixing that. Hey all, so I recently purchased a Logitech G29 with a Playseat Challenge and am LOVING it. This setup is a huge improvement over my old DFGT with Wheelstand Pro.
One thing that I was not super happy with though is the G29 shifter - although it makes gameplay much more fun over the paddle shifters, it just looks and feels kinda cheap. So far I have done two small things that have made a big difference: a new shift boot to replace the plasticky one that comes with it, and a new aluminum shift knob to add some weight and feel.
Original:
New suede shift boot (black with red stitching to match the Playseat Challenge):
New black aluminum shifter with accurate shift pattern:
I also have the 3Drap shifter mod coming to add some resistance to the throw so it feels less like a toy - I will update after I install it. But I have to say, even with the new boot and shifter, it already feels much more real and like less of a toy. So much better!
Hey!
Almost two years in of your Playseat challenge/G29 combo how is it going?? still loving it?? anything broke?? still comfortable??
asking because I'm about to buy the same set up
Cheers!
Yep, still loving it and everything is still going strong. Haven't had any issues with anything breaking or falling apart. Definitely recommend the setup.
@Coryd
Hey there!
I installed the new shifter knob and boot but I can't really shift into the 1st, 3rd and 5th gear. It's not really locking like in the 2nd 4th and 6th.
When I try to shift in the 5th gear, it's jumping over in neutral. Not every time but very often.
I really hope you or somebody else can help me with this problem.
Thanks for the reply but I think I almost cut it too long. Someday I will try to fix it lol.What probably happened, is that you cut the boot too short. When you shift, it stops the stick because its stretched out. When installing you should always put the stick in 1st gear and cut the boot so it fits the length.
Just modded mine. Thanks for the tips!!
@Coryd
Looking great. Well done :-)
I have the same setup Playseat and Logitech G29, but dident buy a shifter yet. Been thinking about it for some time, just not sure wich route is best to go.
How did you attach the gearshifter to the playseat challenge ?

The shift knob came with a couple plastic adapters. After removing the stock knob, I just slid the adapter onto the shifter and then screwed the new knob on. Easy peasy.
I was kinda worried that it would come lose with heavy use, but it's on there pretty tight - no issues.

And I bought this:
To improve the shift feel/force. Seemed like a significantly more robust/thought out design than the 3DRap stuff; and it was much cheaper.

Took a few weeks to ship, but the installation was pretty easy and it won't disintegrate with use like the 3DRap one does.
That's the shift knob. One with red stitching doesn't seem to be available anymore.
Thanks for your reply. And can you say anything about the durability as that seems to be an issue with the 3drap?It's a pretty dramatic difference. Even with the meatier shift knob on there, to actually shift requires a fair bit of force and there's a lot more feel in the shifter itself when you do (compared to the mushy shift action that you could bump on accident before).
I'm digging the carbon. Looks great.Here is mine, before and after. I installed a leather boot and a Ryanstar shift knob. I found both at Amazon! Works great!
Well, you’re the reason why I did it lol. I just found this thread and thought it was a great ideaI'm digging the carbon. Looks great.

Hey man I was wondering how to get the shift boot onto the shifter can you just cut it down to spec and it’s good to screw downHey all, so I recently purchased a Logitech G29 with a Playseat Challenge and am LOVING it. This setup is a huge improvement over my old DFGT with Wheelstand Pro.
