Looking to get driving shoes for GT Academy

I was hoping for the communities help in some suggestions for reasonably priced driving shoes ( 50-100 dollars US).

Since nationals are carried out on stock DFGT's, and the only real advantage you can have is the ability to wear driving shoes, I figured i should get a pair and get used to them before the last set of tests come out next Sunday.

I'm happy with my driving set up {I built my own pedal stand for my DFGT and use a table for my wheel.} I actually upgraded the setup recently to tie everything securely together as one unit. I would love to have a slick cockpit, but my fiance and I are in a one bedroom apt, so my setup has to serve many duties.

I'll post some pictures of my setup tom. (I also have two TVs in the living room tied to my DVR.) That way the woman can watch TV while i play PS3... key to a happy relationship... that and good headphones.

Ill keep the post short because its late, but any advice at all would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Stephen

I would recommend posting photos of your setup in the appropriate forum so this doesn't end up getting moved there.

On the shoes, do you feel you need them? You can run with shoes off....

I covered my pedals with nonslip, and zip ties. It works great and is a slicker setup then it sounds.

The angle of my pedal stand works out great but I find my feet slipping still occasionally when i am really thrashing around. I am a big F1 fan too so i have to do a lot of foot work with F1 2011, so it would be a plus to get them.

If you think it will help you, I wouldn't see why not I guess. Maybe a pair of Puma's?

I personally like a little "slip" from the pedals.

I prefer socks, I can't use DFGT with any sort of shoes on. If I managed to make nationals I would have no problem stinking the place out with my smelly feet :P. Personally I think using a DFGT (at home) will be a slight advantage but most of the guys that go to the nationals will be very competive no matter what wheel/setup their on.

I am going back and forth between shoes and maybe the simBOOT option... i liked the older design better though where you could custom tailor the grip patterns on the bottom, now its just add on toe grips.... decisions decisions.

If you're only going to use the shoes for GT Academy, just get a pair of wrestling shoes. Wrestling shoes and racing boots are pretty much the same thing, except racing boots are made with nomex and I would suspect wrestling boots might have slightly more ankle support. Wrestling boots should be available at any sporting goods store, unlike racing boots.

If you're dead set on getting actual racing boots, the only boots you will find for less than $100 are the plain-jane G-Force (~$60) and Racequip (~$95). Anything from the fancier brands is upwards of $180.

EDIT: I forgot about karting boots. Karting boots are usually available in the same designs as racing boots (if the look is what you're after), but lack a nomex fire barrier and, as a result, are usually significantly cheaper.

I was taking a look around for karting boots, and there's not that much out there in the us at least, found a lot of ones on ebay.uk but they want 35 for the shoes ---- 80 dollars for the shipping..

Guess i'll keep looking, BTW any one on the community have any old size 12 racing / karting shoes they are trying to sell? ;)

I think i found what i want on Ebay

http://http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ralph-Lauren-RLX-Carlyon-Sneakers-Mens-Driving-Shoes-/140750958825?pt=US_Men_s_Shoes&var=&hash=item20c56930e9#ht_1288wt_1270

I was wondering what everyone thought about these-- it says they retail for 200 by they are Ralph Lauren so they are Waaaaay overpriced in stores.

--- I wear a size 12 in regular shoes, do you think i should go up a size to 13 for these, always heard step up a shoe size for driving shoes.

Thanks everyone

To each their own, but I'm still trying to figure out what you're hoping to accomplish by using driving shoes. Two pedals, two feet and the goal should be most pedal feel possible, which is accomplished barefoot or with socks. Heck, even in my real car (Miata) I heel/toe downshift all the same whether barefoot/skeletoes/flip flops/dress shoes/ect. Unless you just have money burning a hole in your pocket (I don't) this is a total waste imo.

between the high angle of my pedals with my mounting setup and the way i drive i am having a lot of pedal slip... a lot of people drive with shoes on...

I think you're throwing money at a problem, that isn't a problem, that's all. Do I love my Playseat/G27, yes. Do I think it has made me any faster than when I played Forza with my wheel in lap, sitting on the couch, with pedals pressed up against the coffee table? Nope.

Well, minus the switch from 270-900 degrees, that did make a noticeable difference.

not trying to start a mini war here but that statement is ridiculous, your saying that you have the same level of repeat-ability of motion with a sketch couch setup as you do in a playseat... yeah right. .

Like i said before our setups are different you have a low angle mounting base with that playseat so your pedal face angle is low, I on the other hand built my pedal stand with another set of pedals in mind, so when i changed to the DFGT the pedals are near 70 degrees when fully disengaged, this requires me to make a dramatic lift, ive had more then a few occasions where my toes slipped off while trying to get back on the pedals.

For me i think its a good idea, not everyone needs a solution to keep their feet from sliding, but i do , so either post something constructive or leave please.

Thank you for the info R1600, if by some miracle i make it to Florida, i think i should be okay with flattening out the pedals. I can't start building a new stand now so i've got to work with it for now... kinda the same reason i didn't out grandgurismo shifter paddles on... don't want to train myself for something i cant use.

looking at the pictures from last year they still have a kink to kick the pedal angle up, its not as dramatic as my set up is, but that's good.

I was fast enough on that setup to race door to door with 3wide, to qualify 2nd for axf24, and to win one of the Hyundai rounds. In iRacing I picked up almost a second on a typical course going from ms wheel to g27, but that was wheel more than seating arrangement. Call it ridiculous if you like, but it's not and I am trying to help...trying to help save a few bucks by adapting and over coming. Obviously you're dead set on the shoes, so I hope they help as much as you hope.

I just ended up buying those shoes, i was going to wait on the community, but i checked back to show my fiance and their were only 4 pairs left. I ended up getting the size 12 RED/Black...

man you make one thread and the trolls come out, go crawl back in a hole....

Should I put my driving shoes on first for better traction lol. Your grasping at straws dude and throwing your money away. But if that's what you wanna do so be it. Just stating my opinion. That's what you asked for right?

Negative sir, those were the European finals.

The USA finals used a different setup, where the pedals were mounted flat in the rig. You sat pretty low to the floor too. I will try to scrounge up a photo.

Edit: Here ya go.
