Lost Spitfire Squadron Found

They were buried for "disposal".

They were probably actually buried for preservation purposes, like a time capsule. Whatever officer was in charge was probably ordered to "dispose" of them. If I were him I wouldn't have destroyed them either, I'd have found a way to preserve them for later retrieval. And that's what just happened.

No they were buried for disposal.

The British dont want the Japanese to get there hands on a single piece of them to learn from and they are not needed so just dig a hole and tell no one.

I really hope that these aircraft will be recovered and restored to flying condition. I then would enjoy to see them owned by museums worldwide or private collectors who will fly them and show them for all to enjoy. And won't crash them.

I mostly preferred the Bf-109, and other German planes, but I'm not gonna lie, Spitfires were amazing, and their beauty. at that model.

I like war planes, but the WWII planes had some serious style. Fantastic story, and I look forward to some pictures, maybe even a documentary! :)
Ok then. Your favourite plane of WW2 and why.
Reisen/Zero, because it was named after me. :sly:

Might be his weakness, but it ain't mine laddie.

Thanks for posting SL - great find, both the story and the planes!

You're welcome. I knew you'd love it. That's one of the reasons for posting it. :)

By the way the British burried things, I'd say the planes are doing well. However, if they buried them to 'destroy' or else, they could have not done a good job. Fingers are crossed, gentlemen. :nervous:

This is great news. My day instantly brightened up when I saw this thread. I hope that at least some of those Spitfires make their way into the sky. This was a great find! Too bad about the clipped wings, but still no reason to complain.

They probably forgot about them just like everyone else. The best finds are the ones that time completely forgets about. I imagine a dozen Spitfires underground are easy to get lost in the shuffle of postwar restructuring.

Either way, their loss is our gain!

I'm surprised post war Britain didn't ask for it or retrieve it. They needed all the metal they can get to rebuild.

Because we decided to give them independence after the war. Thats when the Junta got to power.

Clipped wings just makes them more authentic. If that's how they were used in the war, then I have no complaints.

What a great story! I can't wait for pics to see the overall condition when permission is granted to unearth them  Thanks for sharing SL 👍

They were buried for disposal but they clearly made an effort to preserve them so that in the future (when they would be outdated and almost no danger to anyone) someone can find a mint condition factory fresh Spitfire, which can be put in a museum.

There is that but why waste ammo and money blowing stuff up when you don't need to. Plus one of the scattered pieces may be picked up by the Japanese.
