MoD inquiry into mysterious bang

The Ministry of Defence is investigating reports of a loud bang that has been heard across a large part of England.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service also said they were looking into what caused the mysterious noise heard at about 18:10 BST.

Reports have come from across the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.

One Coventry resident said his house shook. "I thought somebody had thrown a brick through the window," he said.

The MoD said it was looking into reports of a loud bang in Oxfordshire.

There were reports of the noise being heard from as far apart as Bath, Swindon, Coventry, Rugby and Oxford.

Birmingham Airport dismissed suggestions the sound could have been caused by a sonic boom as a plane came in to land.

I'm willing to bet that this is something similar to the Tunguska Event after all, since there are no immediate answers and it makes sense!

The bang in Coventry was Cat Bin lady driving a bus into a pawnbrokers to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the FA Cup win

 Some of the Twitter comments are brilliant.

Anyone hear it? What was it like?

A lot of my friends heard it, they said it sounded like a sonic boom from a plane but it shook the ground across a very wide area too.

No chance of an earthquake? :dunce:

At times like these I wish I was Premium. :(

Apparently not, the MoD are investigating but nobody else can figure out what it is! People are also reporting a 'rush of air pressure' during the sound and the rumble felt at the same time.

Very odd. No news of any impact? If this was a "Tunguska" situation I guess an entire area would be wiped out and all inside killed, so - thankfully - that doesn't seem to be the case.

If it were a smaller meteorite then that wouldn't happen, but a sound would still have been heard. 'homeforsummer' was the first to mention it in the Premium thread, he seems to know a bit more about it than me so I'll link him to here.

The MoD have confirmed it was a sonic boom; they've said that a helicopter pilot accidentally pressed an emergency button that sent out a signal to say he was in trouble. Two Typhoons took off and that's what caused the booming sounds.

Well some twitter reports are saying that the MoD has confirmed a sonic boom, but we'll see whether that turns out to be the case.

Edit: Tree'd

Yes, I am in Bath, it was 2 x Eurofighters flying very low.

I saw them out the window looking to go towards a silver object in the sky, then they turned back and flew off.

Very strange. Perhaps they were scrambled for some reason.

A loud bang heard across the Midlands was caused by two typhoon aircraft responding to an emergency the Ministry of Defence has told ITV News.

The aircraft were on their way to a small civilian helicopter that was emitting an emergency signal. Such a signal could indicate the aircraft had been hijacked or had ‘gone rogue’.

One of Royal Airforce Typhoon’s emitted a sonic boom that shook houses in Coventry, Rugby and Leamington.

The MoD response was standard procedure officials say, but the emergency signal from the helicopter turned out to be a false alarm.

Still, some will see it as an indication of the high alert Britain is now on, in the run up to the Olympic games and Queens Jubilee celebrations.

Could definitely be a sonic boom, but Britain does have earthquakes every once in a while. There was one in NE Wales in the early 1990s and a sizeable one (considering the location) in Birmingham a few years before that.
