Maine Forest Rally 2002

OK, it isn't WRC. It is FIA sanctioned, and this forum could use a bit of filling-out. :D

I just got back from a dirt road just outside of Oquassic, Maine. What a day! I finally saw in person that which I watch so keenly on TV - overpowered compact cars sideways in the dirt.

First, the cars. Subaru ruled the roost today. Mostly because Subaru had two factory-prepped WRC Imprezas running about. There were plenty of non factory WRXes, 2.5 RSes, Legacies, etc.

There were a few real Lancers running around. EVOs IV, V, VI, and VII were represented. I only wish I could've gotten a closer look.

Hyundai had two rally prepped Tiburons. They were nice, but the Imprezas still got around faster. (You can see the results for yourself at the Maine Forest Rally website.

The rest of the field was filled out by several Foci, at least one Celica, a couple of AE86 Corollas, a Neon SRT, a Civic hatchback, an Integra Type R, a couple of Saab 900s, a mid size Chevy truck (dunno what model), a few DSMs (Eclipse/Talons, all first and second gen), a Mirage, a couple of Audis, and a paaartridge inna pear tree. :P The field was ninety-six cars strong at the start, and was down to eighty-something by the end.

I didn't get to see any accidents, but there were a few. I saw a Talon rumble by with a badly dented passenger door. There was also the WRX with the rear bumper hanging off and pieces of tire flying all over the place. And then there was the Lancer (EVO IV or V, I think) that trundled by with a very unhappy sounding engine. :nervous:

What surprised me most was that most of the competitor's cars were street legal. I'd see them running around on the same public roads I was using between stages. Running errands and grabbing munchies, most likely. :)

I also have to say that you haven't heard a rally car 'till you've heard one live. Roaring, shrieking, popping and backfiring - and louder than death for some. Quite a few of them were quiet - more so than some street cars!

I think that's it for now. I have about two dozen pictures that I will post as soon as I get them back. That should be Monday evening. Until then.... :)

Well...I'd love to show ya'll the pics...but for some reason Rite-Aid didn't bother shipping my film until today. So we all have to wait until tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch, Rite-Aid. :grumpy:

every car in the field has to be road legal, no matter what it is. that's applicable to WRC also. imagine seeing one of the Group B cars, in traffic right aside you!

seems like you had a great time!

I did...I'm going this winter, too. :cold: :)

Amazing...I wonder how "street-legal" they could possibly be. I mean, when they rip by full throttle, you smell gunpowder...just like if you'd just discharged a rifle or something.

I wonder if they slap in a test pipe for the races...

They didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped. I learned my lesson: no disposable cams! Oh well. Here are a few of the better ones...

Bah, I guess Yahoo! doesn't want me to link to my pictures. :irked:

Follow the link.

How did the SRT do? I've seen video of that thing at a rally in California, and at the Rim Of The World rally up in the snow. I must say it sounds awful - like a riding mower on crack - in the vids.

That's one of the pre-production test mules, and is surprisingly like what you'll be able to buy for $19,900 next spring. They are shagging the life out of it in ProRally competition as a stress test.

I'm very jealous that you got to see the whole rally. It's definitely on my to-do list before I die.
