OTTAWA (Reuters) - A Canadian man who could not figure out how to deal with his girlfriend's feverish 10-month-old daughter put the baby into a freezer to cool her down, a local newspaper reported on Friday.

Derrick Hardy faces charges of criminal negligence and assaulting the infant, who was rescued when her mother came home, the Charlottetown Guardian said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said the mother found the girl crammed into the freezer alongside ice cubes and hamburger meat. Hardy said he had left the door ajar but the mother said it had been closed when she returned.

He told a court in the eastern province of Prince Edward Island on Thursday the child had only been in the freezer for about 40 seconds.

Hardy, 21, who admitted to police that he had no real parenting skills to deal with a sick child, said he had noticed the girl was very hot and put a cool cloth on her face, but this had no effect.

He then carried the girl outside into the night air but, frustrated that this also did not work and worried she might drown if placed in a cold bath, he put the baby into the kitchen freezer. She was wearing only an undershirt.

A local doctor said the mother had described her baby as "crying, sobbing and terrified." The child spent several days in hospital to recover from first- and second-degree freezer burns on her head and torso.

Hardy has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The baby's grandmother now has custody of the girl.

Oh dear Lord...:nervous: :scared:

How can you plead not guilty? and how can you think putting a human in a freezer will help them get better faster! Duh! You put a coat on when you go outside int e the cold whether you're sick or well. So, why would putting someone in the freezer make them better.

This guy isn't only a bad parent, but a radically stupid person.

I doubt his intention was to protect the baby.
Trying to cure his daughter? Pfffssss, PO-LICE

Ciao!

This guy isn't only a bad parent, but a radically stupid person.

Yep. All the more reason for parenting classes, rather than just the practical exam.

I can't imagine why anyone would think that putting a baby in a freezer would help its fever, but then again I can't imagine why anyone would think that it's safe to do 120mph on a motorbike in the pouring rain with an inch of standing water (as the guy who passed me just now).

Assuming his version to be true, he's not a criminal, per se. He was trying to do the best for the kid. He's just a clown who needs to learn about looking after kids.

At least the child didn't have the chills. God knows which kitchen appliance he would have stuck her in to warm up :scared:.

There was an incident over here (OZ) around a year ago where some guy put a baby in the tumble dryer because her clothes were wet.
Some people really have no idea at all and its nothing to do with parenting skills it comes down to plain old common sense.

I can't imagine why anyone would think that putting a baby in a freezer would help its fever,
I have been known to stick my own head in the freezer when I have a nasty headache or a fever, makes me feel better, perhaps this guy has found the same thing and decided to try it on the kid :ill:

but then again I can't imagine why anyone would think that it's safe to do 120mph on a motorbike in the pouring rain with an inch of standing water (as the guy who passed me just now).
I can't imagine why someone would think that it's safe to type while driving (as the guy who I just quoted appears to have done)

My brain = teh internets.

And there was a woman who put her baby bath on a stove element to keep the water warm, then left to answer the phone, and didn't turn the stove off and the water got very hot, and...

I think the baby survived but was badly scalded.

gOoSe has got a good point there, but still, the kid was only little

i often stick my head in the freezer
