The word is that the RX-8's aren't making anywhere near the horsepower that they should(owners are dyno'ing around 175 as opposed to the supposed 247 for the 6speed) until around the 20,000 mile mark so Mazda has agreed to buy-back all of them, or do some kind of free scheduled maintencance, and give the owners a $500 debit card, or something.

Also apparently the check engine light comes on after 1,000 miles, yet nobody knows why. Oil level light comes on at high speeds, and dealers are doing recalls to replace oil pans. If I was an owner I'd sell it back to Mazda, and buy something else.👍

Yeah, hide all fragile things and take cover because he'll be like a storm in Texas fired out of a greased gofer cannon when he sees this.

Kind of a shame, seemed like such a nice car. Hope they can fix the problem...

What's with Mazda and having these HP problems? The Miata also had such a problem some time ago (and Mazda did the same thing, with buying back the car and giving the debit card).

Too bad... I saw my first one yesterday on the freeway - incredibly gorgeous, with a silver-blue paint job. :) (Though the butt looks like a Mitsubishi Eclipse from a distance)

I don't get you idiots. This is certainly the ugliest car in a decade and a half. You're willing to give the Bangle 7-class hell for its questionable design, but Mazda's slips by undetected? Come ON!!!

Agreed. All I wanted from the RX-8 was its cool engine, and apparently Mazda can't get that right. I wouldn't say it's the ugliest, but it's definitely on the fugly list.

I don't get it either.

It looks like a blind crippled version of Bangle (redundant?) designed the RX8.

Why anyone bought it in the first place is beyond me. But then again I like 1986 Toyota MR2s and 1993 Suzuki Caras.

I've heard nothing of this. And I can't see how a 175hp car can run 150mph in tests, and 0-60 in 5.9 secs.

Mazda hasn't released any of this anywhere on thier official sites, and untill they do so I will not believe it.

And the RX-8 forum appears to be down right now.

But I would say that this is a hoax. I've heard no complaints, and the owner of MazdaWorld.org has a Renesis RX-8 and loves it and has experienced no problems. Also, my dad, usually the first to point out the problems on the new Mazdas and Subarus he's worked on, hasn't said anything about any problems on the RX-8.

And, look at the older rotary engines. None had this problem, and I find it hard to believe that this rotary which only differs from other rotaries in where the ports are would have such a problem, especially this thing about them gaining power at 20,000 miles. It's impossible.

The check engine light could be a problem. On the 6, my dad has seen some come in with the check engine light on, this was caused by longer than normal starts in certain temperatures. It doesn't cause any problems except people freak out, but this problem has been fixed.

And Josh, dealers are doing recalls on it? Really? Cause my dad hasn't done any. That's odd. Where did you get that bit of info from? As shop forman, if there's recall work, my dad does it or atleast knows about it.

I call bull.

Actually there were 19 pages on RX8world or whatever in which people affirmed it, including several owners (though not with facts) and one dealership employee.

Yea I see it now. Though where did Josh get 175hp from? I can understand 238 due to emmisions to a cirtain extent. But if you look at it, the what once was 187hp automatic seems to now be up a full 10 hp. If I were an owner, I'd accept the $500(I bet it's in the form of a MasterCard thingy, my dad got one as an award from Mazda, it even had the RX-8 on it, he spent it on his Giant Revive bicycle) and buy a chip or something. Actually, K&N filters would probably fix the 8 hp lost, if indeed that is the case.

Anyone wanting to ditch thier RX-8 can send them my way. :)

It still is odd how this info hasn't been put on any Mazda company sites...that's why I don't fully believe it.

How is it even remotely odd? Mazda likes money.

And if I have to explain that more -- I'm kicking your ass.

The 175hp is actual rwhp that some owners are dyno'ing at. Mazda re-rated the 6 speed manual at 238hp which with a 17-22% drivetrain loss comes out to 197.5-185.6rwhp.

250hp. 247hp. 238hp. I wonder what the next number will be?!

What I don't get is how owners loved the car untill the power was re-rated. Most of them still love the car, but others are already planning a buy-back. It's 8hp, and if the car drove perfectly fine before, why totally ditch it just because of a rating? It's rediculous. Take the $500 and free service and just drive the car how it's supposed to be driven and be just as happy as before.

Nuh-huh! I would be pissed out of my mind. Those Mazda freaks and their false advertisements, ugh.

Why would you be pissed? I wouldn't be pissed if my family sports car/borderline sedan was down 8hp and I didn't notice untill Mazda pointed it out. It's miniscule.

It's not like it's a safety recall. It's merely 8hp. Plus, it appears that if you buy the automatic, you gained 10hp. It's silly for anyone to do the buy-back if they loved the car before they found this out.

Two-hundred and forty-seven horsepower minus one hundred and seventy-five horsepower is seventy-two horsepower.

175 is the quoted figure on the automatic, which has a detuned version of the manual's engine. The loss on the manual is from 247hp to 238hp.

Im with Doug on this one.

Two-hundred and forty-seven horsepower minus one hundred and seventy-five horsepower is seventy-two horsepower.

Let me answer with what Josh posted just before you:
The 175hp is actual rwhp that some owners are dyno'ing at

That horsepower figure ( 175 ) is measured at the wheels. The 247 hp is at the crankshaft or flywheel. The loss of horsepower is of about 15-25% at the wheels. Thus you should be comparing the 175 hp to what josh posted earlier on as being 197-185 hp based on the new 238 hp that Mazda claims. So its nowhere close to 72 hp as you say. Although it could reach a full 30 hp if considering the initial 247 hp.

Another point that would be worth noting is that a Subaru WRX only puts out about 140 horsies at the wheels. Yet it is still fast on 0-60, and 1/4 mile runs.... although the power is being distributed on 4 wheels instead of 2. Which still makes Mazda's claimed hp ratings seem abit odd.

Mazda hasn't released any of this anywhere on thier official sites, and untill they do so I will not believe it.
is called "avoid the negative publicity" just like this one.

and yes 8 hp is almost nothing, but if i paid for those horsies i should got it.

btw i like the car,is not the most beauty but i like it.

no point in putting it down if the hp rating is between 7-8hp less....
if i can afford it and if mazda makes it...
ID BUY the mazda speed Rx8, that thing looks awesome
i remember hearing somewhere that ford measures there HP at the crank vs gm at the wheels:
thus camaro vs mustang - camaro will win with hp alone
although i like both :)

Just a question on this why could mazda not put the engine out of the rx7 into the rx8 nearly the same car why not the same engine???
Im damn sure that the power out of the rx7 would suit the rx8
Mybe it's just me but mazda knew that the rx7 was a very competitive with a very competitve engine;)

Why o why did mazda not stick with the best engine
