Menu Books and Licenses

I’m new to gaming and GT7 and feel like I’m really starting to struggle. I finished My First Gran Turismo without any problems but my progress in GT7 is slow and very time consuming. I’ve made it to menu book three and I’m trying to pass the final exam for the International A Master License at Nurburgring but today is my second day at this task. I’ve struggled mightily with some of the steps along the way - the rally car at Sardegna - Windmills took me about 12 hours playing time to get through. I do see progress in my driving, on the more difficult tests I sometimes start out three to six seconds slower than bronze but I can slowly whittle that down with literally hundreds of attempts and crashes. My questions include -

1. When I first started I selected the intermediate skill level. My First Gran Tourismo was pretty easy and I can drive a car, use a standard transmission, and have experience driving in snow and rain, so I thought intermediate was the best choice. Should I somehow go back and start over as a beginner?

2. I have been doing all the driving and tests with the transmission in Auto. Is this really hurting me? My plan was to add manual shifting once I got through the menu books. Things happen so fast on my current International A Master at Nurburgring that I can’t even imagine adding shifting to what I’m doing.

3. What’s ahead for the rest of the menu books? Will the tasks get even more difficult?

I’ve made it to menu book three and I’m trying to pass the final exam for the International A Master License at Nurburgring but today is my second day at this task.

All other questions aside, you don't need to do that to progress.

You only need to get the very first B Licence test completed (to bronze or better) to pass Cafe Menu Book 2, and Book 3 is a three-race challenge called European Classic Compacts requiring you to earn - or buy, but don't buy - three classic small European cars from three short Sunday Cup Classic races.

Well maybe I’m not understanding how to navigate in GT7. When I go to the Cafe and click on menu books it shows book 3 is in progress. Clicking on the book just continues to show that it’s in progress. On the world map there is a sort of asterisk by the license center and clicking on the license center brings up my current license status - I passed the B license quite a ways back.

OK, I tried clicking on World Circuits and found the three car challenge for book three.

I’m greatly relieved as I’ve apparently spent many hours unnecessarily getting ahead of myself trying to pass all of the licenses.

Always follow the big gold compass! If there isn't one anywhere, go to the Cafe Menu and make sure you clicked "Start" on the menu book

Should I press on to achieve it while it’s fresh in my mind or come back to it later? I think I’ll give it a few attempts today and if I don’t achieve it I’ll go back to book 3. My problem is I’m so challenged by things like this it’s very difficult to walk away.

The highest licence required in the game itself is the standard A Licence, so you don't need to do anything beyond that. I'd save it until later, as getting to Cafe Menu Book 39 is more valuable in terms of what unlocks along the way - and getting to Collector Level 50 after that (made easier by the Weekly Challenges, available after Menu Book 39), which unlocks more things like buyable engine swaps.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to pass that final exam this morning and couldn’t find that least tenth of a second. I’m happy to hear that the standard A license is all I really need.

Dear all, I am very new to GT7 and need some guidance. I have PS5 Pro and play it with a controller. I made an effort to familiarize myself with the game, but I do jot 100% know the path to master it: 1. Do I need to pass all licenses before I do anything else? 2. Then I do all the menu books...

Keep in mind that changing the difficulty level doesn't require you to "start over".
I'll sometimes change it just to see how it effects a certain race!

Don’t feel too bad about struggling on IA-10 - It is a great challenge to drive a hard to handle car on arguably the toughest part of the Green Hell

The Difficulty setting only affects the AI in World Circuits and Missions - it does not affect the target times for Licenses or Circuit Experiences.

Speaking on manual transmission, my recommendation on a starting point (once you unlock the Missions section) is the Magic Mountain Fiat 500 race. Driving a 17 HP car on a short, but hilly circuit will teach you the basics of driving with a manual.

The basic rule of thumb is lower gears for acceleration and/or turning, higher gears for top speed and/or stability. Your ultimate goal is to practice until shifting becomes natural instinct.

Here is my IA-10 run to show you what is possible with manual transmission (ignore my previous record - that was on launch day physics)

You don’t need to learn manual right now, but it is worth considering if you intend to get into Sport Mode and/or the Master series of Licenses.

Some cars like the Radical (must be short-shifted) or the McLaren MP4/4 (needs to shift up 2 gears in rapid succession on long straights) are especially reliant on Manual for maximum pace.

It turns out my biggest problem was not navigating through GT7 in a more correct beginner path through the menu books. I think I have that figured out and am now on Book 6. My progress is really slow because at each step I keep hitting “Retry” to keep improving my times even though I already achieved the targets of at least third place in the races. I need to just accept that and move on instead of repeating the races.

I’ve also decided to start manually shifting now instead of waiting. I think that’s better than trying to learn it later when I’ve advanced to faster cars. Manual shifting has really slowed me down because I’m fighting 50 years of muscle memory driving real world stick shift cars using a clutch and now I’m switching to left foot braking and paddle shifters.
