Mercedes SL55 Fuel Tank Noise

I have a friend who recently purchased a 2003 SL55 and he has had problems with a percolating/vibrating sound coming from the fuel tank from the first day. It's almost like a persistent rattling/bubbling sound that you can hear quite well from the rear while sitting inside the car. Mercedes has been unable to fix the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the fuel tank? Any suggestions on some articles which talk about this problem? Thanks for the help!

After purchasing my new Ferrari and getting my Range Rover supercharged, I haven't had time to drive my SL55.

I'm sure your friend can relate.

That's what it sounds like.

Or maybe - just maybe - he's assuming the Mercedes isn't the only car on Earth which might have this problem. Oddly enough, the SL55 isn't the only car with a fuel tank.

When he says "Has anyone else experienced this problem with the fuel tank?" that sure makes it sound like he is talking about the SL55 and not our own vehicles.

If he said "Has anyone else experienced this problem with other fuel tank/s?" it wouldn't sound so much like an implication to me.

Well, we assume he's not referring to his friend's own fuel tank, so 'other' is implied. Not that I care. If Mercedes can't diagnose the problem, why would a bunch of people on an Internet forum be of any real assistance?

I have a new CLK55 and haven't experienced any problems. To be honest, that isn't even relevant, but I just like to say 'I have a new CLK55.' It's silver.

Is it fast, M5Power? I know those streets of Manhatten give you room to really let loose.

I would tell him to be persistent about the problem until Mercedes can fix it. He spent a lot of money on the car and they should do everything they can to make it worth his money.

M5Power, whats the interior quality of your Mercedes like? at one point i was considering a CL55 but the interior finish really let the car down, more Daewoo than Daimler. a good friend of my wife has a new E Class estate and has had nothing but problems with it, goes back to Mercedes to be repaired and comes back with something else broken :irked:

sounds like you have a noisy fuel pump(the one in the tank), it may not be mounted correctly. if the rubber mounts have came off or was never fitted from factory (possible factory error) these sorts of sounds can happen.

i would have though mercedes would have been able to fix that though? be persistant with merc, take it back and make them replace the tank and pump (and all fittings) if you have too.

You sound certain this noise is coming from the fuel tank. How are you so sure of this? There are quite a few parts packed in the rear-quarters of an SL55. A lot of them can make noise.

Has Mercedes acknowledged the noise even exists? Or did the tech write "unable to reproduce/did not observe problem" on the ticket? Usually the first step is convincing the service people there is a problem. Maybe its something as simple as the traction control engaging when you prod the throttle and put 400+ hp to the ground? That would be, um, normal.

If the tech does hear it, then let him worry about it.

lol M5 power, I get the feeling you enjoy agruing.

I haven't yet said a serious thing in this thread. Guess you don't enjoy interpreting.

The quality's great - the best I've ever owned. Also the most I've ever paid; they ought to correlate and seem to.

Actually, it's interesting - for a year in 2002-2003, I had a 1999 ML430 which was constantly broken down and always in the shop; I swore I'd never have another Mercedes, but this one's been great (even though I've had it just three weeks :) ).
