Microsoft Longhorn...your input

so... I sit in class today and my teacher brings up Microsoft Longhorn. Just curious what everybody knows about it. It's ups and downs, strengths and weaknesses, that kinda thing.

He also mentioned that the system is way better than linux in every aspect. I really respect my teacher, but I highly doubt that windows can get any better than linux performance wise( ...and everything else:) )

Share your inputs...thanks in advance.

coughbull****cough. Longhorn is nothing more than a test bed for whatever piece garbage Microsoft is planning on releasing as their next operating system. To my knowledge, it will never go public.

From what I've seen of it, it's just a more pretty windows xp (ugly IMHO) with prototype Palladium technology on it (Palladium is pretty much designed to destroy open source as we know it since programmers will have to pay microsoft to authorise the program to run under their OS). Another thing Palladium will cause is a very high lack in consumer privacy since the pc's will be sending lots of data to and from a centralised server.

Well - Assuming your teacher has had his dirty little hands on an RC2 or later I highly doubt he's qualified to say that it's better than linux in every way...

Which is the same reason I can't say anything bout it. And I really can't be bothered either.. It's due when ?.. Q3 2006 ?.. Live in the now - That's my motto...

One WinFS sounds like a load of BS to me...

There are already bootleg copies of it being sold in Asia. So far is it assumed in this thread that Microsoft is incapable of releasing an operating system that will compete with Linux. But that's just Linux snobbery, which is more annoying than Mac snobbery.

Even if it is better than Linux, Linux snobs will deny it to the bitter end anyway.

I wouldn't necessarly agree with you on Linux snobbery...First of all, Linux is the best software developing and programing OS there is out there. They have rights to brag about it! Second of all, they dont really brag about it...at least I haven't noticed it.
And third, I was just wondering if you knew HOW it competes with Linux.

I forgot to mention, there's been rumors flying around that Microshaft is making an attempt to do like Apple and add some unix capabilities. No clue if that'll work or how well it would work - or even if they'll do that.

I've also heard they might start using window managers like linux currently has but I doubt they'll do that either.

Agreed! Just wanted to hear everybody's opinion.

Nobody does, and I never said I did.

No. That does not make it an official product, and I never said it did. But you already knew that.

Well, the even more "document-centric" layout evident in Longhorn really worries me, because it's never really made much sense IMO, but I suppose it's better for some people. Also, the GUI doesn't impress me at all... mainly, the fact that they've been leaning towards border-less icons as clickable objects instead of tangible buttons. And, what's with that huge sidebar on the right side?

As for the actual structure of it, I haven't the slightest clue on whether or not it's better than XP/Linux/OS X/whatever, so I won't comment on that. I must say though that they're running late on a Quartz-Extreme-like technology (I can't explain myself what Quartz is, so here's a link).

Longhorn = Teh suck. Need I say more?

Ahh, it's just another step in Bill's plan to take world domination. You just wait for the Microsoft OS after LH. It'll be like "Please complete 10 hail Bill's, then click okay to continue.

Talking about your favorite OS are you eMad? :P

Joking lol. From what I heard, it sounds like it is teh suck. I might get it. Just depends. :)
