Microsoft Reveals Next-Gen Console: "Xbox Series X"

How can you disagree with something I never said?

I disagreed with it being boring and used again as opposed to using a brand new name. I might not have been entirely clear but THAT was what I was saying.

So I've had time for the design to settle on me, and while I never thought it was ugly per se, as I mentioned in the article, it looks more like a PC than a console. Specifically, an SFF (small form factor) PC.

Even more specifically, the Corsair One. If you want an idea of what the Series X's internals could look like, feast thine eyes:

I wonder given how both next gen consoles are rumoured to be very similar under the hood if the PS5 will be similar in shape, or rather dimensions.

OMG, I hope not. PS5 dev kit looks big and weird with V shape but I would happily take that instead of a speaker looking console. I think Microsoft have rushed it to launch this next year.

Another plus it seems to me is the grill at the top with a bigger form factor allowing for better cooling of the system.

Is it just me, or is this going to be a nightmare with time as dust will just fall INTO the console's internals? :ill: Unless they have some sort of flap inside that automatically closes when the console is powered off. Personally I always keep my console & PCs covered with a cloth when not in use, as well as vacuuming the vents weekly, but I bet I'm in the minority when it comes to dust prevention.

Boy twitter and neogaf have lots of whiners, can't tell if some are fake concern trolling.

People were bitching at Xbox about specs and power this whole generation. Phil Spencer and his team decide to put specs first over everything especially aesthetics to nail that fps and the "power" and whatever other amazing tech is inside. It's also obvious since the RROD X360 days, they will never compromise again on cooling. So I'm pretty sure the components in this thing are not at the point they will be "slim" from day one. It's fine. Let's see how it turns out.

Some speculated size charts, seems the PS4 Pro is larger in width/depth in comparison:

Console ---------------| Height | Width | Depth (inches)
XBOX: SX (on its side) | ~6 / ~12.75 / ~6
XBOX: 1X (on its side) | 2.4 / 11.8 / 9.4
PS4: Pro (on its side) | 2.1 / 12.8 / 11.6
Gamecube-------------| 4.3 / 5.9 / 6.3

It can be laid flat.

Did they really say there is "no future in VR"? Or "no NEAR-future in VR"?
I thought it's undisputed that VR will be the future of almost all video games.
It may take two, perhaps three decades. But not being a major evolver right now seems foolish, no?

I think its a really good benchmark for the generation. Last gen, microsoft set the bar so low that all sony had to do was walk over it, in the very beginning that is. Now lets see Sony leap.

I really quite like the design too. I think the grill on the top could've had a cooler look too it though.

So many people here are too focused on the name and shape. What matters most here; function or form? The specs is the most important and that is what Microsoft seems to be aiming at for next year.

I will love to see what Sony's got up their sleeves, now that Microsoft announced their new console and its specs.

After 3 generations and several revisions, I'm glad of the change in form factor. Just looks more of a new console altogether and not an upgrade. I'll be getting both anyway, so the aesthetics really don't mean anything to me.

Hated the box factor the moment I see it. Not because it’s ugly, but 99% of TV furnitures where you put in your amplifiers, consoles and what not aren’t suited for such a design.

Nevertheless Xbox is my main system so I will get it either way. I guess I’ll just have to put it on its side and accept the fact that it takes out double the space of any other console.

Since this is the "X Series", will they go "full BMW" and launch lots of different consoles using the name?

Xbox X100
Xbox X250
Xbox MX

If this console and the PS5 are close to the same specs, and having a lot of the same games, aesthetics could be a deciding factor for some. Depending on how the PS5 looks, this design will lose more sales than it gains imho just by not being a regular flat rectangular shape.

Atm. I have a PS4 on a table with the TV on, because the TV is viewed from two positions, the TV sometimes swings over the PS4. This box would mean it would have to go on the floor, which also means some kind of stand to keep it off the carpet, or moving it all the time. And I'm sure others will have shelves that may not be tall enough. Now if the PS5 is a similar shape, because there are similar components inside, then it come back down to specs. And which box looks the best. ;)

When its on dust won't be a problem because it will be venting upwards, when off sure you will get some dust settling on top but as long as its not being sucked in under any force the amount that falls through the grille will be minimal. Also I suspect they will be using a domed blower type fan which basically acts like a cover for the internals. I have also always covered my fat PS3 with a cloth because it's gloss black and you know what that's like!

Actually a lot of this reminds me of the 'Trash Can' Mac Pro design. Probably a similar cooling setup.

I can imagine the use of the word 'Series' implies there will be others. Maybe a lower spec one and an all digital one like we have now.

Umm....what? That doesn't make sense at all imo. Why will this lose sales over a simple shape? It's more akin to the gamecube but it's taller. Sorry but that sounds ridiculous...

Sure, but function should matter more than form imo.

No one was buying a Gamecube for Call of Duty type games, GTA, or any driving game other than Mario Cart etc, Nintendo sell to a mostly different audience, and can go down the 'wacky' route when it comes to console design. Microsoft and Sony are the ones that go head to head, and doing something markedly different from the other could gain, but more likely lose sales. Yes, there will be those that buy both or either regardless, but some will also only buy one, and so...

That is why I said, if both machines are pretty similar with regards to the specifications, the decision could come down to which console looks the best, but more likely, fits easily into the space that an old machine is coming out of! This XBox design may not go in the same space. I also gave an example as to how that machine would not take the same space that I have for the PS4 without adjustment. Sorry all that sounds ridiculous to you.

So it seems, at least according to what I've read, the GPU in the Series X is actually based on RDNA2 because of the native support for variable-rate shading. RDNA2 video cards probably won't make it to consumers until sometime next year at the earliest.

If the PS5 and Series X share similar specs, the next gen could at least be on par with PC builds for most of 2020. Interesting stuff.

That name needs to change asap. Reminds me of the Wii U, people just thought it was an add on for the Wii. I know marketing was the main issue for them and I'm not saying that this console will suffer as long as they promote it right, it's just that some people may be confused.

Xblock....

Joking aside, I'm sure most people not in the know will just ask for the new xbox.

All gamers will know what to ask for when buying.

Advertisements are such a powerful tool nowadays, even if you're not into gaming you're going to be aware of both the SX & the PS5, posters will be all over the place/on tv/social media.

These 2 new consoles will be pushed into the faces of consumers hard.

Regarding the design neither the XS or ps5 bother me, I don't really look at thing, it's what it can do that appeals to me.

Look at a PC, massive ghastly looking block with neon lights that sound like a jet fighter (I know there not all like that), but inside it's a powerful piece of technology that brings a smile to our faces.

How 'bout Xbox Square? :D:lol:

Rumour has it that PS5 is stronger but not by much. Hopefully PS5 looks a lot better than that
